  • Basic site by the Avon and an 18th-century coaching inn
  • A 20-minute drive from Stonehenge and 35 from Salisbury
  • Carvery, grills, gluten-free and veg/vegan meals all available
What a pretty, pretty place – and with fishing, dinner and drinks to hand each and every day. Take your tackle, your sense of adventure and your healthiest appetite to The Woodbridge Inn in Wiltshire's Vale of Pewsey, to roam the grounds or its surroundings all the day long, before strolling back to base for eats and drinks in a warm and cosy 18th-century coaching inn. Right by the River Avon, the Woodbridge is in three acres of green and scenic grounds with loads of space to wander. Around the region, an indoor pool, golf, tennis and horse riding are all within five miles, Pewsey is under 10 minutes' drive, and world-famed Stonehenge is within 20 minutes. The inn restaurant dishes up home-cooked food of all sorts including Sunday carvery, pub grub, grills and burgers, and dishes catering for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets (The Woodbridge restaurant is rightly popular, so booking in advance is essential). The site has a play area, toilets, showers and chemical disposal. Free-range chickens regularly wander the grounds and will accept fruit and vegetable scraps if offered... and can be easily shooed away if you'd rather not be bothered. For those (infrequent) times when you're catering for your own self rather than having dinner placed before you in the inn, campfires and firepits are allowed if raised off the ground. A food shop is a mile away and a petrol station is within two miles.

Local attractions

Woodbridge is well placed for Stonehenge, Avebury, Swindon, Salisbury and the south coast, making it a nifty stopover point on longer trips or an excellent (and foodie) base for Wiltshire and south-west sightseeing. As well as Stonehenge and Avebury, a must-see on a Wiltshire trip of the historic variety is the Westbury White Horse (35 minutes' drive), the huge 80-feet high chalk horse carved into the slope of Salisbury Plain on the edge of Bratton Downs; clamber up to it for views of Bratton Castle and two more Wiltshire chalk horses at Devizes and Alton Barnes. A tad more modernly, the fab medieval town of Salisbury, with 13th-century cathedral and original copy of the Magna Carta, is 35 minutes away. Fishing is available within a minute or two's stroll from the site, a golf course is two miles away, an indoor pool is within four miles, and horse riding as well as tennis courts are within five.
