General

  • Back to basics farm site near Wells
  • Pitch where you like
  • Water supply and toilets on site

Let your troubles ebb away at Ebborways Farm near Wells, in the scenic heart of Somerset. Perfect for those in pursuit of an authentic camping experience, simplicity is the key here: it’s just you, a field – and a campfire if you like – in sumptuous, serene surroundings. Facilities are limited to a water supply and composting loos, and you can pitch wherever you like, alone or in groups.

However, you’re not too far from a bit of civilisation: it’s a short walk to a handful of pubs - including a couple that do top-notch food - and a farm shop, in the local village of Priddy (and it is, too).

Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs), as well as nets of logs, are available to buy on arrival.

Please note

Campfires are allowed on site. Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs) cost £8 and nets of logs £5.

The use of generators is not allowed.

Excellent! It is exactly as it says, no fuss no worries no problems, sloping grassy field with plenty of flat spots around the edges. Our first time using the bio toilets, several water points around the field and large refuse bins by the gate, these were full and awaiting refuse collectors? It was over the Bank Holiday so that probable accounts for that? Open fires allowed, pick one of the vehicle wheels laying around to set your fire OR that washing machine drum, what an ingenious idea for a piece of junk! Site was the Ideal spot to explore Cheddar Gorge just 5 miles away. Owners live in house over the wall and their site manager lives on site in a caravan and is available at all times, he was always going up and down tidying up and making sure things were in place so he would be glad to stop and talk I imagine! I had WiFi too! Would come again. £15 a night was the right price

Huge empty field, 8 cars only. BANK holiday Mon & Tues. Camped in converted Land Rover 110, so no amenities required, they did have water and two sets of compost loos. Slightly sloping grassy field, manager on site sorting and cleaning stuff, owners next door in house. For £11 a night this was excellent if your used to out doors living and not being a fussy so and so. No complaints of any noise or disruptions, and had wifi, lookin back at some comments we were a bit puzzled, what do folk expect for £11 a night??

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike, used it to explore Chedder Gorge just 5 miles away.

From the manager...

Thank you very much, look forward to seeing you again.

    Disliked:

Narrow lane to site not great for motorhe as lost wingmirror on route.

From the manager...

Sorry you lost your mirror, but I am guessing you followed a satnav to get here. To anyone reading this DO NOT go down Nine Barrows Lane, or Deer Leap if you have anything other than a car. There is a perfectly good road into the Village from the A39 and there is no problem with our road to here from the Village.

Nice location and relaxed campsite 28/08/2018

  • Liked:

Beautiful surroundings and easy access to the West Mendips Way footpath (literally goes past the campsite entrance) - about 30-40mins to the Ebbor Gorge National Park and 10mins further the the viewpoint of the actual gorge. (surprised this isn't advertised on the campsite listing) Priddy is also indeed very pretty although the food at the local pub wasn't amazing. Great to able to pitch where you want and feel more relaxed than in other sites with long lists of rules. There were some groups playing music etc. but nothing too bad and was silent by midnight. Couldn't find a farm shop in the village but there is a shop in the campsite just north of the village that sells essentials, alcohol etc.

    Disliked:

The instructions on paying at the house are a bit muddled as the camp field entrance doesn't make it clear you need to go down the road rather than access via the field, and then there is also a 'campsite office' in a large caravan at the back of the field where you can also pay.

Quiet friendly fun basic site, pub in walking distance with playground and lots of character, good beer.

    Disliked:

Composting toilets are great eco option we really liked novelty, less suitable for under 4's as you cant get a child and adult in one and shut the door I'd say young children ( specially girls) would need a bit of adult supervision, Ive been in public toilets with far worse smell, these are just a bit "compost smell" if people dont use the sawdust. Kept nice and clean though.

Directions

From the North/ Midlands:
Take the M5 then M4 to London and take first junction M32 Bristol.
At the end of the M32 follow the road around to the left.
Follow signs for A37 Wells (mostly written in the road). Basically the middle lane, past Temple Meads Station.
Continue to follow the signs for Wells through Pensford, Clutton, Temple Cloud, Farrington Gurney and Chewton Mendip.
At Green Ore (traffic lights with pub on right), continue straight on.
Approx ¼ mile turn right, signed for Priddy. (If you find yourself going downhill, you have gone too far)
Continue for three miles into the village, take the first left past The Queen Victoria pub.
We are 400 yards up on the right. There are 2 very large beech trees just before our drive.

Please call at the house on arrival.

Local attractions

Given the proximity of Bath and Wells, there’s an obvious temptation to regale your companions with choice one-liners from Blackadder; but pause for breath and you’ll discover that both have more celebrated charms than the baby-eating bishop.

Bath probably needs less of an introduction: think Roman baths, Georgian grandeur, Jane Austen, rugby and culture aplenty; while Wells, which holds the accolade of England’s smallest city, is a medieval gem with a thirteenth century cathedral, a moated bishop’s palace, and a lively twice-weekly market.

Also highly recommended is a trip to the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, which offers something for all ages: breathtaking views; brilliant caving and rock climbing; walks up Jacob’s Ladder; open-top bus tours; a clutch of family attractions; eerily beautiful stalactite caverns; and, of course, more cheese than you can shake a stick at.

Keen walkers will be delighted by the proximity of the Mendips (Ebborways Farm is close to the West Mendip Way, which runs to the Ebbor Gorge nature reserve); or, for those who prefer life on four wheels, there are loads of fascinating places an easy drive away: atmospheric Glastonbury, the colossal caves and family attractions at Wookey Hole, the vibrant maritime city of Bristol, the fantastic safari and adventure park at Longleat, and the sandy beaches of Weston-super-Mare.

If you’re visiting in August, you may be lucky enough to coincide with Priddy’s annual sheep fair; this historic event, with animal demonstrations, a funfair and more, attracts a whopping 10,000 visitors each year.

Finally, should you feel the need to indulge in our national pastime, there are more than 90 outlet shops at the Clarks Village centre, in the nearby village of Street.

Must see
