General

  • Back to basics farm site near Wells
  • Pitch where you like
  • Water supply and toilets on site

Let your troubles ebb away at Ebborways Farm near Wells, in the scenic heart of Somerset. Perfect for those in pursuit of an authentic camping experience, simplicity is the key here: it’s just you, a field – and a campfire if you like – in sumptuous, serene surroundings. Facilities are limited to a water supply and composting loos, and you can pitch wherever you like, alone or in groups.

However, you’re not too far from a bit of civilisation: it’s a short walk to a handful of pubs - including a couple that do top-notch food - and a farm shop, in the local village of Priddy (and it is, too).

Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs), as well as nets of logs, are available to buy on arrival.

Please note

Campfires are allowed on site. Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs) cost £8 and nets of logs £5.

The use of generators is not allowed.

A lovely welcome. The open airy field, with plenty of space even on a hot July Saturday evening, the peace and quiet, the lovely views.

    Disliked:

The composting toilets which perhaps should be described as trench latrines. The box seats over the trench are not very clean and nothing is provided to be able to clean them for yourself for example a hose. Could be improved.

Relaxed atmosphere, lots of space. Can buy logs and make a fire. Great walking all around, and a pub within 5 minutes' stroll. On a hill, good to get a breeze on sunny days. No phone signal or wifi - which I count as a good thing, but others might not!

    Disliked:

The toilets but to be honest I never experienced compost toilets before. However they don’t smell as bad as what I thought they would. I only stayed one night this wasent the owners fault either. There was a family next to me and there kid was screaming all night. Also horses and hounds making noises all night. Plus I got really cold at night to the point that I was convolsing that bad that I threw up. I think it got colder as it was on a hill.

Directions

From the North/ Midlands:
Take the M5 then M4 to London and take first junction M32 Bristol.
At the end of the M32 follow the road around to the left.
Follow signs for A37 Wells (mostly written in the road). Basically the middle lane, past Temple Meads Station.
Continue to follow the signs for Wells through Pensford, Clutton, Temple Cloud, Farrington Gurney and Chewton Mendip.
At Green Ore (traffic lights with pub on right), continue straight on.
Approx ¼ mile turn right, signed for Priddy. (If you find yourself going downhill, you have gone too far)
Continue for three miles into the village, take the first left past The Queen Victoria pub.
We are 400 yards up on the right. There are 2 very large beech trees just before our drive.

Please call at the house on arrival.

Local attractions

Given the proximity of Bath and Wells, there’s an obvious temptation to regale your companions with choice one-liners from Blackadder; but pause for breath and you’ll discover that both have more celebrated charms than the baby-eating bishop.

Bath probably needs less of an introduction: think Roman baths, Georgian grandeur, Jane Austen, rugby and culture aplenty; while Wells, which holds the accolade of England’s smallest city, is a medieval gem with a thirteenth century cathedral, a moated bishop’s palace, and a lively twice-weekly market.

Also highly recommended is a trip to the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, which offers something for all ages: breathtaking views; brilliant caving and rock climbing; walks up Jacob’s Ladder; open-top bus tours; a clutch of family attractions; eerily beautiful stalactite caverns; and, of course, more cheese than you can shake a stick at.

Keen walkers will be delighted by the proximity of the Mendips (Ebborways Farm is close to the West Mendip Way, which runs to the Ebbor Gorge nature reserve); or, for those who prefer life on four wheels, there are loads of fascinating places an easy drive away: atmospheric Glastonbury, the colossal caves and family attractions at Wookey Hole, the vibrant maritime city of Bristol, the fantastic safari and adventure park at Longleat, and the sandy beaches of Weston-super-Mare.

If you’re visiting in August, you may be lucky enough to coincide with Priddy’s annual sheep fair; this historic event, with animal demonstrations, a funfair and more, attracts a whopping 10,000 visitors each year.

Finally, should you feel the need to indulge in our national pastime, there are more than 90 outlet shops at the Clarks Village centre, in the nearby village of Street.

Must see

  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (1.7 miles)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (2.3 miles)
  • Wells Cathedral (3.2 miles)

National Trust

  • King John's Hunting Lodge (6.5 miles)
  • West Pennard Court Barn (8.5 miles)
