Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien will not want to pass up on the chance to stay at Somerset Garden Yurt and Gypsy Caravan, where a large hobbit-esque yurt (sleeping up to six people) sits in a secluded area accessed through a wooded glade and overlooking a wildflower meadow. And no, you don’t have to travel to New Zealand and The Shire for this, because it’s all in Somerset, a 10-minute drive from Taunton. What’s more, guests also get full access to an original gypsy caravan, with accommodation for two additional people. Fully insulated (and carpeted), the timber yurt is adorned with colourful scatter cushions and throws, rich textiles and wall art, and hung with fairy lights, creating an intimate vibe. After dark, you can snuggle in bed with a cup of cocoa (or a glass of wine) and admire the night sky through the clear eye in the roof. Stargazing has never been so cosy. There’s plenty of space on site for kids to run around in, not to mention excellent walks in the vicinity, including along the River Tone (10 minutes’ drive). Speaking of walks, dogs are welcome, but please let the site owners know in advance if your four-legged companion is coming along. In addition to a modern shower room and toilet (plus a washing-up area), guests also have access to a fully equipped kitchen and bakehouse with a wood-fired oven. There’s also a firepit, and the owners kindly throw in a complimentary starter pack for your first night (kindling, logs and charcoal); additional wood can be purchased on site or you can source your own. The nearest supermarket is in Monkton Heathfield (10 minutes), with more options in Taunton.

Liked: Totally magical place, walk along a path with fairies and woodland creatures to enter the main area. The yurt is spacious with comfortable beds and heated blankets. The gypsy caravan is very cosy. There is a cabin with well equipped kitchen, also a hut with pizza oven which the children enjoyed making their own pizzas and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows. The barn has a large table ideal for family meals or playing board games on a rainy day, there is also a cosy seating area with log burner, undercover BBQ area with everything you need including charcoal, plenty of logs are also supplied for pizza oven, fire pit and log burner. An assortment of garden games and football table is also available. The area is totally secluded and secure which meant the dog could enjoy being free to roam around at her leisure All this and the bonus of it being owned by a very lovely warm welcoming couple Can't wait to return

Local attractions

The landscapes of the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes’ drive) range from a rocky (and fossil-rich) coastline to heathland and oak forests inhabited by woodpeckers and other birds. Popular hiking areas include wooded Broomfield Hill and Dead Woman’s Ditch nature reserve. An area of mudflats and marshes, Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve (35 minutes) sits where the River Parrett meets the Bristol Channel. This is a haven for waterfowl, including shelduck; meanwhile the reed beds provide shelter to dunlins and oystercatchers. Re-enact your ‘French Lieutenant’s Woman’ fantasies by walking along The Cobb at Lyme Regis (one hour), or go hunting for ammonites – after paying a visit to the Mary Anning Rocks Statue, of course. If you fail to find any, check out the collection at the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum.
