General

  • Small and peaceful site in the scenic Blackdown Hills
  • Spacious pitches on the edge of woodland six miles from Taunton
  • Local pub within 50 metres and several more within easy reach

It's a simple couple of minutes' amble (or totter) to (or back from) the pub local to Holly Bush Park in the Blackdown Hills, but that's not even the most mighty fine part of this small and secluded site.

This peaceful place's setting six miles south of Taunton is also a teeny drive from the border with Devon, among countryside walks, Forestry Commission woods and yet more country pubs, and all in a wildlife haven and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If it's sands and dinos you seek, Lyme Regis, Charmouth and the spectacular Jurassic Coast are all within 35 minutes; closer to home, the site is directly opposite woodland; golf, horse riding and fishing are within a couple of miles, and two sports centres are under five miles away.

Although it's a small site, Holly Bush is acclaimed for its excellent and well-kept facilities and its overall setup, laid out over two and a half acres with green space aplenty for kids – and their grownups – to play. The amenities block has separate ladies' and gents' shower areas, free hot water, toilets, a washing-up area and a laundry room.

Calor gas is available to buy on site.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Lovely little stop-over campsite on the way to Cornwall. Good facilities and very helpful and friendly warden. Also a great rural pub just around the corner (my wife particularly liked their Gin shelf).

Really friendly welcome, quickly shown to a choice of pitches and given useful site and local information. The loos and showers are spotless and the free wifi works (at a leisurely pace as you would expect in a rural location!). Nice a quiet with no noisy children perfectly located for our purposes and booking was quick and simple - same as always on pitchup!

Beware, the local pubs don't serve food on sunday evenings so we had to go a little further afield, down to the Westminster Arms in Trull (about 3 or 4 miles down the road) - outstanding meal at a really good price - well worth the trip!

    Disliked:

Quite a small site so pitches are a little close together compared to other places we have stayed

We had such a warm and lovely welcome from the owners, they personally took us to our pitch and made us feel like about the most valued customers ever! When our gas cannister ran out on the 2nd morning, Sue offered to cook our porridge oats for us, and she actually took away our saucepan and did so in her own home, astonishingly kind. The washroom facilities are immaculate, the site is quiet and beautifully kept. I cannot recommend highly enough, and all credit really due to the wonderfully warm owners.

Friendly helpful people. Spacious pitches. Huge dog walking area. Easy going quiet site. Good base for exploring and walking. Clean toilets and showers. Free WiFi. They loaned us OS maps. Lovely local pub next door. Good TV signal. Local to Wellington and Taunton. Not far to Lyme and Sidmouth.

    Disliked:

Not really dislikes but the less positive ones. The toilet block was a bit dated and dark. Push button taps did not have much water coming out and it's difficult to hold the tap down and use it. Hand drier was ineffective. Wifi was weak and phone signal weak too. Not the sites fault obviously. Very fast quite busy road outside. Pitch surface was weird stuff that seemed to find its way into the van.

Local attractions

This is a stunning setting, metres from woodland, walks and country pubs, and within easy driving distance of activities and attractions over Somerset, Devon and Dorset. Playing fields and parks are close by.

The coasts of three counties are all handy for day trips: at Somerset, have a day at Weston-super-Mare or Minehead, both under an hour away; at Devon, make for Seaton and Dawlish, 35 and 55 minutes' drive respectively, and at Dorset, dig into the attractions of the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis, Bridport and West Bay, all within 45 minutes.

For local walks and dog walks around the region's woodland and the Blackdown Hills of Outstanding Natural Beauty, try the two reservoirs and the nature reserve of Otterford Lakes, five minutes' drive from the site, where anglers can also cast off for wild brown trout. Or have an urban wander around Somerset's towns and cities such as Wellington (15 minutes), Exeter (45 minutes) and Glastonbury, just under an hour away.
