General

  • Quiet farmstead site in the Blackdown Hills
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of Honiton and Taunton
  • Several horse riding centres nearby for moorland hacks

All the best stuff happens on the borders. And Buttles Farm, in Somerset but a mere five minutes' drive away from Devon, is a prime example: a peaceful and secluded farmstead site in the Blackdown Hills, within 20 minutes' drive of the towns of Honiton and Taunton, surrounded by walking, cycling and horse riding trails, and with many equestrian centres within easy reach as well.

Overlooking the Culm valley, pitches are peaceful, level and surrounded by farm pastures. The farm's residents include sheep, chickens and pigs, and the site owners grow cider apple varieties in the orchard.

Amenities include a well-maintained sanitary block with toilets, washbasins and carbon-neutral showers, a fresh water supply and regular refuse collection.

Barbecues and campfires are allowed on site. Five minutes' drive away there's a farm shop and a fine old inn with fresh food; bigger shops and supermarkets are easily reached in Honiton and Taunton.

Although the splendid scener of the area will be hard to ignore, you're also handily placed for a quick hit of history: head five minutes in the car or take a pleasant half-hour hike over to Upottery Airfield to learn about World War Two from the West Country perspective, or make a 10-minute drive to 14th-century Hemyock Castle, sacked during the English Civil War.

Wow what a lovely find. The field is flat and huge. The toilets and shower block was clean everytime we used it. There was us and 2 other tents when we went so it was lovely and quiet but the field is so big you would have privacy even if it was a busier.
The stars are amazing at night.
Carl was really welcoming and let us know about local places to go for walks.
All in all a brilliant weekend in a lovely place.

A wide open well kept patch of land. The kids loved running across the fields and playing games in the open space.

The bathroom facilities are a short walk away from the pitches however they are more than pleasant considering your camping! All were very clean and the showers had hot water straight away!

An ideal location too, as we had day trips into Weymouth (1hr away) and surrounding beaches.

We really enjoyed our stay - thank you Carl. We will certainly be booking again!

Loved it, the field was lovely and flat. So peaceful as only us and two or three other families were using the site at a time. Very easy to find using the satnav. Loads of space for the children to run around in without disturbing anyone else. Owner was very friendly and helpful, letting us know about the local area. Toilets and showers are a very short walk from where you pitch up. Farm shop about a mile away and a spar shop a 10 min drive away. We were lucky enough to have a clear night, was in awe of the starlit sky it was amazing and we saw lots of shooting stars. The children were asking when we could go back before we'd left!

    Disliked:

Not that I disliked it as it didn't bother us at all but there is a smell near the toilets which some people may not like.

From the manager...

Absolutely enjoyed our stay at Buttles Farm. We stayed for 7 nights and found the toilets and showers to be clean at all times. The camping field is large and even over the bank holiday weekend it didn't feel at all crowded. It's a great base for visiting places and at night it's so peaceful and dark with no light pollution. Carl the owner is very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend Buttles Farm and would definitely stay again.
    Many Thanks

I am sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us here at Buttles Farm. We do advertise our campsite as a hideaway farmstead, with a large field to run around and play in. We have recently identified a fault in the plumbing and are working to fix it straight away.

Nice flat site, well sheltered, quiet, good fees. I would stay again 20/08/2018

Field was perfectly flat and seemed to be dry despite rain being present whilst I was there.

The site was very shelted from the wind, was extremely quiet. Dark (little sky light pollution) and no street lights preventing you from sleeping well.

The site was large and when I visited, there were five visiting parties including myself. As a result, all had privacy and it was quiet. The site does not operate set pitch areas so I imagine you can maintain most of this privacy if it was busier.

The toilets and showers were clean. The room was well vented and there was no toilet smell. The toilet/ shower block looks recently refurbished. Showers had a good flow on them with plenty of hot water.

Pich-up overall rating was hard to give. In my mind, a rating of 5 means everything was perfect, there is nothing that I would like to change and everything you wanted was available. Buttles Lane got a four because it was pretty much all of these.

Local attractions

The level plateau of the Blackdown Hills provides ample options for cycling and walking – just ask Carl, the friendly owner of Buttles Farm for his recommendations or to lend you a walking book. There's also a cracking good 13-mile circular walk at Castle Neroche (15 minutes' drive), through traditionally managed woodlands grazed by English Longhorn cattle up the broad vistas from the hilltops.

If the heights of Neroche or your trip to the old airfield have your gaze fixed upwards, visit the aerodrome at Dunkerswell 15 minutes away for a microlight flying lesson or a skydive, or book yourself in for a 20-minute glider flight on selected days of the week at Devon and Somerset Gliding Club (20 minutes).

Fear not though if you prefer your feet firmly on the ground, as the many views, walks, beaches and fossil-studded cliffs of the famed and UNESCO-protected Jurassic Coast are around 45 minutes' drive from the site. Make for elegant Lyme Regis to see the prehistoric treasures of the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, then head round the coast to Charmouth beach and try hunting some fossils of your own.

You could also hike the mighty South West Coast Path (all 630 miles of it, if you fancy) or head to West Bay for sandcastles and a high-speed boat ride out to sea.

Must see

  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (3.7 miles)
  • Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site (15.5 miles)
  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (15.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Loughwood Meeting House (8.7 miles)
  • Shute Barton (9.6 miles)
