  • Secluded farm glampsite with scenic Somerset countryside views
  • Blackdown Hills and Dorset AONBs within 15 minutes
  • Top spot for stargazing by the campfire
Hunting for a spot for some rural rejuvenation, but where you can still hang onto home comforts like your own toilet and shower? Head to Somerset and follow the private track through fields of maize and grass to the secret woodland copse at Yeabridge Farm Hideaway, a glampsite on a working farm five minutes’ drive from the village of South Petherton. Here, solo fliers and social mixers alike are looked after with a mix of private and shared spaces: the site has a well-equipped communal kitchen (with fridge, oven and a collection of utensils) and each unit has its own charcoal barbecue, picnic bench and firepit. There’s no queuing for loos either, as each pitch has a private shower room and compostable toilet (big thumbs up to such a setup). When it’s time to stretch your legs, stroll the short distance to the farm lake – stay extra quiet and some deer, ducks, swans or foxes might even come nosing around. Or shake those trotters over to the farm itself, home to pigs, sheep, lamb and chickens – a well-timed stay will coincide with lambing season, when the kids (and grownups with a soft spot for fluffy baby animals) can have a go at bottle feeding. Don’t forget to pack a torch, as the nights get dark around here and there’s no electric lighting (just solar power). There’s a glimmer in that darkness though – dark skies make for evenings well spent stargazing around the campfire.

Liked: Nestled in nature's embrace, this glamping site is a true haven of comfort and tranquillity. During our recent stay, we were delighted to discover that the accommodation not only provided everything we needed but also went above and beyond to create an atmosphere of unparalleled cosiness. From the inviting firepit to the warm glow of the indoor chimney, every detail was designed to make me feel at home. The hosts had thoughtfully provided all the necessary amenities, from cosy blankets, and chairs allowing us to create cherished memories while roasting marshmallows and sharing stories under the starlit sky.

Local attractions

For those who like to dabble in active times, Vaux Park Polo Club (10-minute walk) offers lessons and taster days, or you can watch a match pitch-side with a picnic if you prefer to stay out of the action. There’s also a horse riding school (five-minute drive) and a swimming pool (10 minutes) for other energetic options. For something more leisurely, some fabulous properties and gardens are dotted around – Montacute House (10 minutes), Barrington Court (10 minutes) and Mapperton House and Gardens (30 minutes) are all worth a mosey. There are plenty of scenic explores to be had with the proximity of not one, but two, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Blackdown Hills and Dorset (both 15 minutes) – where you can cycle, walk, ride or even kayak your way around. Pack in the education with visits to the Fleet Air Arm Museum (15 minutes) and Haynes International Motor Museum (20 minutes), or opt for lessons in the county’s famed tipple instead at Perry’s Cider Mills (15 minutes) and Somerset Cider Brandy Company (15 minutes). Complete your stay with a trip to tourist hotspot, Glastonbury (30 minutes), where you can climb Glastonbury Tor and get a glimpse of Glastonbury Abbey.
