  • In the grounds of a hostel in Exmoor National Park
  • Full access to hostel facilities
  • Horse riding, photography help, fishing and Exmoor safaris available
How excellent is this? The outdoorsy accommodation at Exford Hostel lets guests indulge their fondness of outdoor hols but have a little extra luxury too: site guests have access to all the facilities in the hostel including its comfy lounge, self-catering kitchen and dining room, washing machine and drying room. (And, as you'll presumably know everyone in your outdoor accommodation rather than being in with strangers in a dorm, you can feel free to kick them when they snore.) The site part is all rather handsome (have a squint at the site pics), tucked away in the grounds of the hostel, which in turn is in the centre of Exford village – and it's all slap bang in the centre of Exmoor National Park with the scenic Somerset coast about six miles away. As it's Exmoor, there are of course many most excellent activities to try nearby: the Exford Hostel team can arrange horse riding, photography tuition, fly-fishing lessons, coasteering, Exmoor safaris and clay pigeon shooting if you let them know between booking and arrival what you might fancy.

Local attractions

The moorland villages of Dunster and Dulverton are a short drive away, as are the comely coastal villages of Lynton, Lynmouth and Porlock, and the smashingly spectacular scenery of Somerset's moorland, hills, woodland, wildlife, the north Devon and Somerset coastline, and the peaceful landscapes of Horner, Cloutsham Valley, Oare and Dunkery… Both the South West Coast Path and the Coleridge Way are close to hand for those who fancy splendidly scenic hikes, and eight circular walks start from the hostel. Stacks of cycle routes are nearby too. The Exford Hostel team also recommends a picnic by the medieval bridge at Landacre, hiking among the wild goats of the Valley of the Rocks (Coleridge and Wordsworth waxed lyrical here, verse fact fans), or taking the 11-mile drive to the excellent watersports opps at Wimbleball Reservoir, all sorted by the competent South West Lakes Trust.
