  • Direct access to footpaths and bridleways, 30 minutes from Minehead
  • Music, whittling, campfire building and carving courses available

Up for making some music under a starry night? Sign up for one of the music courses at Exmoor Glamping and Camping, where you can croon the evening away at Wimbleball Lake, one of the first Dark Sky Reserves in the country. Or just kick back and enjoy the scenery at this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of Wimbleball Lake, where you’ll be able to settle down for relaxed times in Exmoor National Park.

Guests can also hone their skills in spoon whittling, carving and campfire building with the other courses available, or set off on a ramble around the area: the site has direct access to miles of footpaths and bridleways on Wimbleball Lake and Haddon Hill. Further afield, it's 30 minutes' drive from here to the coast at Minehead.

Amenities include beech hut washroom with a hot shower, flushing toilet and and washbasin, and additional chemical camping toilets when the site is busy. For eats, free-range eggs, fresh bread and local game sausages and burgers are sold on site for cooking up on the campfire, and shops are in Dulveton six miles away.

Friendly welcome, even though owners were not there themselves, they left a lovely notice.

    Washing up area very useful.

    Disliked:

Not on the lake as expected.

The grass was not level and because it has just rained and was wet it was not too easy to manoeuvre the campervan.

This was my 10 year old sons first camping experience and he loved it! A small intimate site in a lovely location. The pony trekking was a real treat. Would highly recommend a visit.

Lacking facilities 26/08/2018

    Quiet.

    Disliked:

We opted for a standard tent pitch which was at the end of the field away from the facilities.

Glamping is a bit of an overstatement, and even if you are staying in one of the spacious bell tents, you will need to be prepared for a general lack of facilities as only one small 'beach hut' attached to the main farmhouse is available for showers/washing for the whole site.

From the manager...

Meant to say that the Glamping is in my bell tents . Basic camping otherwise .
This site will be closing after this week as We have had so much stuff stolen and so many people moaning about insects and normal things that you find in a field in a remote place .
We have had a bunch of amazing and lovely visitors this summer and hope that it came across just how much we care . However we will focus in future on wild camping and people who appreciate peace and simple values . Good old fashioned camping and Glamping in bell tents if you fancy it !

Really friendly owner- was very informative and helpful. Location is lovely, very pretty walks and great views.

    Disliked:

Facilities are a little tired and the camping area is quiet hilly- although there are enough level pitches to compensate.

Sue and Kev were very welcoming and happy to help with anything we needed including helping with the WiFi
The directions provided by email before arriving were also very helpful as we may not have found the campsite otherwise.
The animals were all very friendly and definitely added to the experience.
Cool box was provided and new ice blocks were provided for the second day.
Beds were comfy and considering how much rain there was during our stay, the tents stayed relatively dry.

    Disliked:

    Wasn't really as we expected.
The utility tent toilet wasn't emptied during the two nights we were there and became very full, meaning we could no longer use it.
One of the gazebos we had within our group actually collapsed during wind and rain.
The other gazebo wasn't waterproof and everything within it became wet and damp.
When booking the bell tents, it stated that there was 1 x shower but that the toilet was shared. This made us believe that somehow each tent had a shower when really it was a hut with a shared shower (which was fine, just wording was misleading).
The site also stated there was electricity, but this was a socket on one of the fences, to be used by the whole campsite - we weren't made aware of this, luckily one of the group found it but if your tent was further away from the socket you wouldn't be able to use it.

To start off with, the directions to the campsite given by the woman & email were more confusing than the satnav, it had a completely different name to what the owners had named it online. When we arrived there was no one to greet us we had to ask other campers if we had found the right place. Very limited flat space to pitch a tent, all Uneven ground. We had 2 portable toilets in tents on the site, 1 of which had a broken zip. Although there was an actual toilet... in their shed? Along with a shower and sink, however the towel to dry your hands with wasn’t changed for the 2 nights we were there, bearing in mind it was being used by all the other people on site, including kids. There’s a sink on the outside of the shed to clean your pots with, which they provided cloths and washing up liquid for, but not clean and nor was the sink. They have a bunch of friendly dogs living on the garden and around the site but this also meant a lot of dog poo outside our tent! On the 2nd night we woke up at 7am to 5 horses outside our tent who had jumped over a fence, we didn’t mind horses but it’s not what we expected to wake up to. Finally, to top off the experience... we was woken up at midnight to an argument between the couple who own the site. This went on for at least an hour and it wasn’t exactly quiet, we heard everything and couldn’t sleep till they stopped.

Directions

From Taunton:
Follow the signs for Minehead (A358), passing the Cross Keys Inn and signs for Bishops Lydeard and the station. You will see Cedar Falls Health Farm on the right. Take the next left onto B3224 signposted Exford etc. Drive up through the hills and eventually you will drop down and go straight across the crossroads. Climb the steep hill passing Raleigh's Cross Inn. Shortly after this road changes to B3190 (signposted Bampton). Don't turn right at the chapel - just keep going.

Within 2 miles, turn off right between 2 reflective bollards signed by a brown tourists sign to Wimbleball Lake. Drive over the bridge and the road narrows going up hill. Just after some farm buildings take the next left to the lake. Follow the sign to Wimbleball Lake. Drive past 3 entrances on left to lake and climb lane. Your satnav will take you to a cottage on the left (this is not us) follow the lane and eventually it drops down to the left. Ignore the sign saying 'no public right of way'. We are on the left just beyond our old tin garage.

We are on a single-track lane with passing places. Our 28-foot caravan and 7.5 tonne horse lorry can move in and out comfortably but please bear this in mind.

Local attractions

If you’re pitching up in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you’ll find plenty to see and do, with Dulverton, the gateway to Exmoor, on the doorstep and with the beaches of Minehead, Dunster, Porlock, Lynton and Lynemouth all within easy reach alongside miles of cracking Devon coastline – the Victorian railway down the cliffs is a must-do. History buffs will be in heaven with the cathedral and medieval tunnels at Exeter an hour south, while foodies can browse around the gourmet shops and market at Barnstaple.

If you’d like to something a little more active than sunbathing, sightseeing or railway-riding, take your pick from local fishing, golf, sailing, horse-riding, climbing and more, or hire a bike to cover a few more miles. Or try a sailing or fishing holiday on Wimbleball Lake – with a 10% discount available for Keen campers at the South West Lakes Trust Activity Centre.

Walkers will find a first-class route onto Haddon Hill or the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or can take in the many local beauty spots including Tarr Steps and Dunkey Beacon. And walks can be combined with nature-spotting by taking the 13-mile walk around Wimbleball Lake and looking out for some kingfishers and red deer. Naturally, there’s a tearoom to stop at en route for the obligatory Devon tea and scones...
