A traditional camping site in Cheddar free from pretentious wardens and just four minutes drive from the gorge with outstanding views of the magnificent Mendip Hills.
Whatever you prefer:
- Staying on site and chatting to friends
- Taking a stroll around the Somerset levels
- Wandering up the gorge
- Conquering the Mendips
- Visiting our many local attractions
At the end of the day, just imagine simply sitting round a campfire chatting into the small hours with friends and a glass or two of your favorite tipple...
A warm welcome awaits you from Jules, Sandra, Kelly and Steve. For a small charge, Kelly has been known to provide tethered pony rides And Steve can usually be persuaded to organise a tractor ride! There is also pony trekking and karting close by.
Whether you are a seasoned veteran or new to camping you want to know that you are coming to a venue that is clean and safe, close enough to walk to local shops but far enough away to switch off from it all.
Petruth Paddocks provides the ideal base from which to enjoy your time away. A footpath runs straight from our entrance to the village and onto the gorge.
Please note however that whilst we have toilets we do not have showers on site - they are a two-minute drive or 15-minute walk away at the Kings Leisure Centre or why not bathe in the river Yeo just a short walk away?
We have plenty of water taps along with a few electric hook ups. All rubbish must be taken to the local refuse centre or home with you.
Upon arrival we'll give you a handy guide to Cheddar - a little booklet we've put together that helps you not to waste time hunting for the cashpoint or best pubs - you'll even get a deal if you take it with you when you eat out!
The village of Cheddar linked by Cheddar Gorge to the Mendip Hills is an ideal centre for a holiday. Not only are there many things to do and see in the surrounding area but also many things of interest both in the village and nearby.
The famous Cheddar car boot is held every Sunday just five minutes walk away on the same site as the karting track, Cheddar Ales Brewery and Cheddar Chocolate factory - what more could you possibly want?
If walking and rambling are your thing, there are numerous signposted paths and nature trails beginning in the gorge and our bottom gate leads onto the Somerset levels.
For the more active of you the village has a leisure centre, riding stables, fishing, crazy golf, and sailing activities are available nearby. Potholing and caving can be arranged taking you well into the Mendip cave system.

chilled and friendly - the perfect campsitte alexcarmichael14 (With friends, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: arrive when you like, pick a spot anywhere you like in the huge fields, pitch up (or park in our case), BBQ in the sunshine, head to one of the many pubs or go and grab some cider from a farm then chill out around a campfire. Disliked: It would be good if there was a rubbish bin to drop your bags off in the morning but, we got over it! |

Liked: The owner Jules was very friendly on arrival we were given a booklet with lots of useful information about the surrounding area and Cheddar, including cash points, shops, fuel stations and general tourist info. Disliked: I think the light in the toilet was broken and it was also a little bit of a walk away which was a bit of a pain at night. |

One enjoyable stay Emily B. (With friends, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: How everyone was so friendly, and even lent us some tent pegs when we were being stupid and a nice jump start to our car silly us!! but it was great how everything was so close and there was take away pizza that came straight to the site for orders over £10 i found that awesome! We all had an amazing time! Disliked: how much mud there was but that was our fault going in November raining season haha |

Liked: Friendly owner Disliked: lack of loo roll; no bins on site; not geared at all for outdoor activities as there are no drying facilities; only 2 loos and no shower. Apparently a ‘rally site’ although what this means is not obvious, but there were lots of large family groups partying till 2 in the morning; wouldn’t recommend if you want a quiet holiday, but great if you want to sup ale and burn stuff. |

Liked: This was my first time camping & it was an amazing experience! Jules was so friendly and helpful. He made the experience a fable one. The campsite was so laid bk, dogs were allowed of leads and the usual camping etiquette was non-existent. The views were beautiful and we were in walking distance of shops and the gorge! Would highly recommend this site to anyone and will definitely be going again!!!! Disliked: Maybe some electric would b good? But thats us being fussy!! |

Very good jerome (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: Very nice, basic campsite. Jules was friendly and helpful, checks up on everyone, sells firewood and knows the phone number of the pizza delivery. Disliked: Would have been nice if it was a couple of quid cheaper but was worth the money. |

Directions
Our site is just off the A371 on the edge of Cheddar. From Wells direction you will pass Winchester Farm/Go-Kart track on your left, immediately followed by a nasty S bend. Then take the very first left into Labourham Way. Take an immediate left. Ahead of you you'll see two white Welcome signs. Head towards them and turn left through the gates onto a small track. Head towards the green toilet block and call the number in your booking confirmation.
From the A38/Axbridge direction take the A371 through Cheddar village. Then pass the football club on the right. Then take the next right into Labourham Way. Take an immediate left. Ahead of you you'll see two white Welcome signs. Head towards them and turn left through the gates onto a small track. Head towards the green toilet block and call the number in your booking confirmation.
If for any reason you can't get hold of us, please make sure that you drive through the wooden gateway next to the white signs then down the track into a large field. Turn right at the toilets and drive through the field and into the camping field. Pick a spot where there's been a fire and make yourselves at home! We'll be over later in the day to say hello and give you our helpful guide to Cheddar so you know where stuff is!

Thank you for taking the time to submit your review of our campsite.
I’m so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay – as you can see from our other reviews, almost all our visitors have a fabulous time so I can only think that we did not make clear what we have to offer prior to your arrival?
With this in mind I have now amended our confirmation email as follows:
Hi
Thank you for your booking – we’re looking forward to meeting you!
We are a family run site and offer the opportunity for you to enjoy camping how it used to be – basic but relaxed and friendly!
• We don’t cut the grass every week – we prefer the natural look!
• The toilets are cleaned twice a day but people do wander off with the bog roll and yes it’s a little walk from your tent….
• The grass grows in soil and when it rains it has been known to turn into mud in places – sorry about that!
• We don’t have arrival and departure times – if you are still here the next morning we’ll ask you to pay
• We simply ask you to respect other campers – if we feel we need to explain this we will – we want everyone to enjoy their stay
If you are expecting something different, we this we suggest you may be happier at a posh site and would be happy to accept your cancellation and recommend alternatives in the area.
Here’s some more useful info:
Open fields, plenty of space between you and others and space to enjoy playing games with friends or children along with access to walks across the levels or the Mendip Hills.
Cheddar Village is just a 15 minute walk away along a footpath and the Gorge a further 10 minutes’ walk.
We encourage camp fires and can provide kindling and logs at a small charge.
We have toilets on site with water taps and waste point but do not have showers. You can however shower at the Sports Centre just a 2 minute drive for £2.00 a time.
Please don’t rely on Sat/nav. Please print off the directions on the website otherwise you’ll get lost and get stressed which isn’t the best way to begin your break!
Upon arrival we will give you a guide to Cheddar that we have produced to make sure that you go the best places, avoid the worst and benefit from some deals we have set up for you!
There is no specific arrival or departure time - just call us on 07813 320870 30 minutes before you arrive so that we can welcome you and show you to the right field!
We have limited hook up points and they are pre-booked at £2.50 per night so please let us know now if you’d like one and we’ll let you know if we have one available.
Just a reminder to say that your cash balance is payable upon arrival – you’d be amazed at how many people forget to visit the cashpoint!
See you soon
Kind Regards
Jules and Sandra
So as you can see, I have taken on board your comments but let me now respond to the points you raised:
Summary:
Very basic facilities; Yes – we don’t pretend to be anything else
Noisy due to industrial site on one side – where were you camped? If you were in the field with the toilets in then I can only apologise for the noise – it is not normally on-going and we would happily have moved you further away.
A football ground the other side that has regular ‘doos’ late at night, and a nearby late night karting track The club is the other side of a housing estate and the kart track sound does carry on a Friday night when they run two stroke mini-motos – I guess you have to appreciate that a site on the edge of a tourist attraction will have some potential noise issues – maybe you are best looking for more remote sites in future?
Overall: 3 / 10
Location: 1 / 10
Value for Money: 4 / 10
Facilities/Activities: 1 / 10
Customer Service: 4 / 10 In what respect? You did not raise any issues whilst with us so I feel this is very unfair
Cleanliness: 2 / 10 The toilets are cleaned twice a day and we ask all campers to notify us of any issues – you chose to do this when you got home…
Liked:
Friendly owner – thank you
Disliked:
lack of loo roll; People steal it! We went through 30 rolls that weekend - you simply needed to have asked us for more!
No bins on site: Again we state this in our booklet – there is a waste depot just 2 minutes’ drive away. In fact if you were to have asked me, I’d have taken your rubbish for you!
Not geared at all for outdoor activities as there are no drying facilities; Once again – if you had bothered to SPEAK to me I would have offered to dry anything you wanted!
Only 2 loos – 3 pans and 3 urinals actually - how many do you think we need?-
No shower – we state this at every point of our communication with you - what part of “we have no showers” did you not understand?
Apparently a ‘rally site’ although what this means is not obvious – why not engage us in conversation and ask us?
but there were lots of large family groups partying till 2 in the morning I simply do not believe this. Even if it were true, we state very clearly in our carefully put together Welcome booklet that no other campsite even thinks to offer: “If you are disturbed by any other campers, simply call us and we will resolve this issue any time day or night”
wouldn’t recommend if you want a quiet holiday, but great if you want to sup ale and burn stuff.
In summary I’d say that there were a few things we did not make clear. There were a few things you did not read. I also think that you can’t have the best of both worlds – a quiet location on the edge of a major tourist attraction. All of this could however have been taken care of if only you had bothered to speak to me when they arose! Going home and offloading your feelings onto a public website when you have not even spoken to the owner is I feel a bit rich!
Anyway – as a gesture of goodwill I’m going to refund your stay in full – just the kinda guy I am – something you’d have found out if you’d bothered to speak to me!
Kind regards
Jules
