General

  • Award-winning, peaceful and adults-only park
  • Overlooking the Mendip Hills; River Yeo flowing through the grounds
  • A short stroll to Cheddar village and Cheddar Gorge

How is Cheddar Bridge Touring Park gorge-ous? Let its flow of former guests – count the wheys: it’s scenic, award-winning and overlooks the Mendip Hills; it’s a former Cheddar in Bloom winner for its viewsome flowers, and it has the River Yeo flowing through it – just look at those pics.

If you’re a peace-loving peep, you might also brie chuffed to know that Cheddar Bridge is firmly for ages 18 and over, so no footballs should bang against your holiday home wall at six in the morning (unless your other half really can’t help it…).

Once you’re nice and rested, it’s a short stroll from the site to comely Cheddar village, simply striking Cheddar Gorge and the Mendips, the limestone hills that are part of a Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Norman Ancient Monument and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Please note

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

The site does not allow motorhomes longer than 7.5 metres.

A welcoming flower filled court yard immediately gives a sense of the site. Clean well maintained and quiet. Shower block and toilet area were spotless, the changing area cubicles were very handy too. The site it positioned just outside the village and within easy walking distance of Cheddar Gorge and all it has to offer. There are good pubs and restaurants close by along with a few supermarkets. The river running along the site is lovely too. Certainly a place we'd return.

Very helpful and friendly wardens. Amazing homemade scones/cream tea sold in reception. Very clean site and well kept. Brilliantly placed for walking into Cheddar Village for all your shopping. Sainsbury’s and Tesco within walking distance but also great local shops for local foods. Walking up the Gorge and around the reservoir and lots of local walks all within close proximity. Good dog walk available along the meadows. Didn’t use WiFi and the tv reception was a bit erratic. Some visitors got great reception whilst others, like me it was non existent. Probably due to the aerial type. But I borrowed one from the site and that worked brilliantly. All in all great site. Will definitely visit again.

The site has everything you could need for a stay in Cheddar. There is a small shop on site with all of the essentials, there are very clean and well maintained toilets, showers, and washing up areas. We stayed in a cosy little pod that was complete with a TV/DVD player, a suitable heater, a kettle, a storage unit inside and a shelving unit outside. There was a fridge/freezer and a microwave available for use by those in pods/tents too. Walking distance of numerous shops and pubs. Very quiet. Just what we needed!

This was a great site. Good facilities ; toilets in good condition, great size showers, 2 areas for washing up , fridge if you need somewhere to store milk etc and even a microwave! The site was well maintained and people were very respectful of one another in that it was a pretty calm and peaceful place.

It was a 10 minute walk into Chaddar and the nearest pub which served good beer and excellent food. The gorge was a 25 minute walk away.

It was well located to get onto the Strawberry Trail although we missed the sign so went round the houses (literally).

Directions

Leave the M5 at Junction 22 onto the A371 towards Wells. Follow the signs for Cheddar (12 miles). Continue to follow signs for Cheddar village (do not turn left for the Gorge). Pass through the village with the Stone Cross on your left, and pass the church (the road bends left).

Cheddar Bridge Caravan and Camping Park is immediately on the right. The entrance to the park is over an ancient stone bridge.

Local attractions

Cheddar Gorge and Caves first, of course: you could spend days in one spot just gaping at the gorge, but there’s also climbing and caving to be had, wandering around the heart-stopping stalactite caves (we stand and gawp here too), and puffing up Jacobs Ladder and to the Lookout Tower – it’s only about 300 steps to the tower top…

Delve into the story of the gorge at the Museum of Prehistory, including the famous Cheddar Man: multi-attraction day tickets are available at the gorge for the above as well as for a clifftop walk and open-top bus tour. It’s a similar story at Wookey Hole Caves, which has a wealth of family attractions based around the caves and the famous witch.

In and around Cheddar town, it’s not much surprise to find there are other tasty treats to try: cheese, naturally, but we also recommend a taste trip around the Cheddar Chocolate Company and Cheddar Sweet Kitchen, with grown-up treats available at the Cheddar Ales brewery and at Somerset’s many (many) cider farms and producers. Souvenirs of all should be loaded into the car boot to take home.

Cheddar Bridge Touring Park is roughly halfway between the seaside at Weston-super-Mare and the tiny city of Wells for at least a couple of days’ worth of trips, with Bristol and Glastonbury also within a reasonable drive.

Dive into Bath, also nearby, for Roman remains, spas and Jane Austen; the literature, arts and children’s literature festivals are well worth a look too if you’re in town at the right time.

There are numerous villages dotted about for markets, pubs and picking up local produce; if you feel the urge to burn some of this off, King Wessex Leisure Centre at Cheddar has a pool, sports court and gym.

Hikers and twitchers have the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels to keep them occupied, with the Mendips also well known as a climbing and caving centre. Look out for peregrine falcons and marsh harriers in both areas; to find out more about snipes and other feathery sorts around these parts, the RSPB has a reserve at West Sedgemoor.

Savvy shopper sort? Congratulations: Wells has a market every Saturday and Wednesday, and the biggest car boot market in the south-west is on every Sunday at Winchester Farm, only a quarter of a mile from Cheddar Bridge Touring Park: bring an extra suitcase for your goodies.
