There’s more than a hint of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five about Alpine Grove Touring Park: tents hidden among secret groves of rhododendron, dappled with shade from the oak trees towering above, plus den building in the woods, scavenger trails, biking and hiking adventures around the local countryside, picnics and sausage-fuelled singalongs by the fire. Bet they sell lashings of ginger beer in the on-site shop...
Campers can choose between sun or shade, seclusion among the rhododendrons or a more open grassy area for their pitch. In addition to all the good old-fashioned fun outlined above, there’s a heated outdoor swimming pool, tennis, a children’s play area with giant trampoline, plus of course the usual amenities for ablution, laundry, refuse and recycling. Bikes and firepits are available for hire, and well-behaved dogs are welcome.
A level cycle path runs along the disused railway line between Chard and Ilminster, or for a more challenging ride, the 80-mile loop of the South Somerset cycle route goes right past the site. There are also plenty of walks for all abilities, and golf, fishing, and horse riding nearby.
Nearby attractions and activities
All the attractions of South Somerset, Devon and Dorset are within easy reach, so it’s impossible to list more than a few highlights here. The popular seaside town of Lyme Regis is renowned for its Cobb Beach, fossils and links to Jane Austen, and has a good museum. Forde Abbey, a stately home which used to be a Cistercian monastery, has stunning gardens, and soft fruit lovers will find its ‘pick your own’ farm berry exciting (jostaberries, anyone?).
For animal fans, Cricket St Thomas Lakes and Gardens offers lots to see, including meerkats, wallabies and deer, plus 160 acres of colourful gardens encircling the imposing Cricket House. Europe’s biggest collection of naval aircraft is hosted at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, which regularly hosts special events, from Dalek invasions to drag racing.
Within the lovely orchards of Perry’s Cider Mills, there’s an interesting museum of old cider presses housed in a sixteenth century barn (and, of course, abundant opportunities to sample the results in the farm shop and tea rooms).

Liked: Flat pitches, beautiful scenery, peaceful surroundings, friendly owners, clean showers, security gates, children's play area, hired fire pits. Disliked: Lukewarm water (in washing up facilities and showers at times), pool out of action at time of visit, limited stocked shop - no milk. |

A fantastic site with friendly staff craig p. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: We loved the safe feeling of having a gated entry, our secluded wooded pitch was exactly what we wanted for a weekend away. Disliked: The only thing I would say that I disliked as a minor point would be the shower, they were hot, powerful and clean, but I had to keep pushing the button in every 10-15 seconds (mens left shower), so couldn't really enjoy a decent shower without continually pressing the button in. |

Attractive location with great facilities David H. (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The site was well presented and offered a great level of facilities for its size. The pool was closed for us as it was so early in the season, however, later in the year, it'll be a great attraction for the children which can be easily supervised. Disliked: Some of the children's park facilities were geared toward children a little younger than mine. Although they were perfectly clean and safe, the girls seemed to want a small sheltered area to 'hang out' away from the younger children with their new found friends. |

Liked: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, I'm not a big review writer but the owners of this site really do deserve credit. For couples/families this site is perfect, small enough that you don't get lost but large enough that you don't end up bunched together. Disliked: I honestly cannot think of anything, for some the site may be a little small (40 pitches overall?) but I see that as a good thing, it certainly wasn't crowded. Besides there is plenty to do and see in the area. |
