General

  • 430-acre farm site near the Quantock Hills
  • Help feed the farm pigs, goats and chickens
  • Footpaths, fields and woodland to wander; maps provided

Foodies: this is the site for you. Huntstile Organic Farm near Somerset’s Quantock Hills knows its food inside and out and backwards too. Owners Lizzie and John are fervent about good food grown simply, locally and well, and their 650-acre site grows, produces and rears top quality produce of all flavours.

Huntstile is also in an area of low light pollution: gorging oneself on local oysters then lying beside the tent and looking up at the stars sounds like a holiday you might like like to hunt anywhere…

Guests can help feed the farm pigs, goats and chickens (just ask the staff) and if you ask very nicely, the farm cats and dogs might take you walkies around the farm’s footpaths, fields, woodland and farm structures like the 16th-century seed granary (Huntstile has been a farm since at least the 11th century and surrounds a 14th-century farmhouse).

If you prefer to self-guide, pick up a map from the dining room and take a tour around the farm or take one of the walks to the Quantock Hills start directly from the farm gate; John and Lizzie can provide maps for other nearby and smashingly scenic walks to their homemade stone circle and through ancient woodland.

Facilities at Huntstile include a composting toilet in the pitching field; toilets and showers with free hot water a short walk away, and access to a campers’ fridge with freezer space. Kids can also have a bouncingly good time in summer on the big garden trampoline.

The farm café is in the former stables/dove loft and serves continental breakfast or a full fry-up (book when you arrive) from Tuesdays to Saturdays as well as picnics when requested.

It’s several years since my young son and I were last here. It’s different but the same. It's still relaxed and you can do your own thing unhindered, as we did, camping in the orchard. But its different. This is a rather exceptional business where there are continuous improvements that bring their own ‘buzz’ and make Hunstile a very pleasing place to be, whether you camp, glamp, B & B or wine and dine.

Nathaniel, scion of the family and seemingly effortlessly, will cater for your wants - even baking good bread - and if, like us, you haven’t been for several years will still remember you (this is simply outstanding!). Meanwhile, John and Lizzie find the time to be welcoming and amenable despite busy schedules.

Everything. Feeding animals with the farmer at 8 am. Emergency butter provided for hungry campers. Plus flowers cut with jam jar base as a treat for mum. Owner Lizzie super helpful. Loverly bar to warm up and play board games before bed. And sleeping in an orchard - wake up and picky your breakfast from the tree. Delightful!

Directions

Exit the M5 at Junction 24 and turn left at the roundabout towards North Petherton. Just before you enter the village, turn right into Old Road, signposted Goathurst and Broomfield, then take the second right to Huntstile and Goathurst (note: this second turning is about 1.5 miles up the road; it's just a little white village stick sign).

We are a mile from this second turning on the right, and we are the only farm on this road. Come down the narrow lane and pass two little stone cottages on your right and then a red brick house on the left. The big cow barn and farm buildings are in front of you. Carry on round the corner to the left and you will find two driveways on your right. Take the second one, signposted 'camping', and it will lead you down to the little granary on mushroom stilts and the farmhouse.

If you can’t find us and you get to the brick barn on the left with the blue door and blue circular window then you have gone too far!

Local attractions

Huntstile is three miles from Bridgwater, six from Taunton and about 20 minutes’ drive from the coastline of highly recommended Kilve beach, with the Quantock Hills, Somerset villages and lots more local produce along the way.

Ask John and Lizzie for tips or go in whatever direction takes your fancy: northish to the coast, south to Taunton, east and north-east to Glastonbury and Cheddar, and west to the Brendon Hills and then Exmoor Forest. Weston-super-Mare, Minehead, Bristol and Cardiff are all within 25 miles.

As they’re only five miles from the farm, many guests make the Quantocks their first stop, for gentle walking, strenuous hiking or other outdoorly pastimes such as horse riding, mountain biking and fishing.

Sea fishing is available along the coast of the Quantocks and Bristol Channel, coarse fishing year round at Durleigh Reservoir in Enmore, and fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout at Hawkridge Reservoir just outside Spaxton. Prefer to sightsee? Take the West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard to the coast at Minehead.

Three golf clubs nearby will let you keep your hand in even on hol; for beginners, the ‘still learning’ and youngsters, the informal setting of Cannington Golf Course’s pitch and putt course is a good place to start (and comes with licensed clubhouse for afterwards).

Cannington overall is a handy place to learn the ropes: its riding centre has lessons for kids aged four to 14 and the Cannington Activity Centre has climbing walls, rope challenges and activity days.

Around 20 minutes’ drive takes you to Ramscombe, also in the Quantocks and a picnic spot favourite of the Huntstile Organic Farm staff, as it has loads of space for running and kicking a ball around, brooks to dam, purpose-built barbecues for lunch (and dinner), and a two-mile Red Walk suitable for most abilities.

Also head for Hestercombe House, overlooking the nearby Blackdown Hills and featured on the BBC’s Gardens Through Time. The formal gardens here were designed by Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edward Lutyens and have 40 acres of woodland walks, an orangery, stonework and a temple. Fyne Court, seven miles from Huntstile, is a National Trust nature reserve with woodland garden and estate meadows.

Additional terms

At all times this is a working farm, so there will be large machinery moving around at most times of the year somewhere on the farm. There can be dangerous pieces of machinery in the two yards – the owners don’t like to restrict access on any parts of the farm, and actively encourage children to ask questions about farming and see the combine harvester and tractors in action.
