  • Award-winning holiday park a mile from the beach in Swanage
  • Half an hour's drive from Monkey World and Durdle Door
  • Lively entertainment programme at the site's show bar
Three cheers for this one on Dorset's Jurassic Coast: Herston Caravan and Camping is an award-winning and family-friendly site a five-minute drive from the town of Swanage and its sandy beach. Everyone should find a full programme of stuff to do see and do in this neck of the woods: perhaps rides on the steam-powered Swanage Railway, windsurfing down at Swanage Bay or clifftop walks on the South West Coast Path. The popular attractions of Corfe Castle, Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door are all under half an hour's drive away too. Facilities on site include free wifi, a playground and a mini market that also functions as a visitor information centre. The café/bar sells meals, coffees and a dizzying range of cocktails, and there's also a separate show bar with dance floor and a lively entertainment programme of live music, karaoke and other events. The spacious and clean toilet blocks have plentiful hot showers, family bathrooms and disabled facilities, and the site also has a launderette and a washing-up area. Dogs are welcome at the park as long as they are kept on a lead and cleaned up after.

Liked: The rural location with footpath to the steam railway.

Disliked: This site is so tired and in much need of a facelift - investment in new facilities would be a good first start. The shower block is exceptionally small given the total number of pitches. Given the rate we paid, one would expect the Wi-Fi to be included (as many other sites at lower rates do). One would expect the take away and bar facility to be open given the booking was in the Easter holidays. The grass around the motorhome hard standing should be cut and the shingles weeded. There was no motorhome service point. The number of apparently permanent residents is not at all clear from the booking website information.

Liked: Close to Swanage town and Studland bay. See the steam train pass by. Also not far for the chain ferry over to sandbanks. Nice site very quiet when we was there which was nice. Clean toilets, showers. Pleasant worker s and friendly.

Disliked: Unfortunately time of year the children’s park wasn’t open.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The nostalgic sound of the steam locomotives passing by. Facilities were cleaned to a good standard.

Disliked: I paid £159 for two people staying 3 nights on a fully serviced pitch. I was put on a pitch which was a standard hard standing with grass and an electric hook, and a shared tap. There was no tank emptying facility either on the pitch or on the park. I asked a staff member and was advised just to empty the tank as I drive up the road as there were no tank emptying facilities on site. The facilities were in a very poor state of repair and were too few for the size of the park, people were queueing up outside the shower blocks. Staff would drive around in their cars, on arrival you might get an escort to your pitch, but have a finger pointing out of a car window at your pitch then they would drive off. There were no company logo shirts or fleece jackets on the staff to identify they were staff. The pitch was covered in weeds and the grass was cut and cuttings just left there, so you would walk the grass into the motorhome.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: What a great location! Facilities were spot on. Super clean - I was actually shocked at how clean the shower and toilet block was kept given the rain and mud!! Very impressed Showers worked well with v good pressure and good temperature (which in some places can be really below avg.) Staff were lovely Views were amazing And yes it was a little muddy so had to take the road walk to Swanage - but it was not that far and we were able to flag down the local steam train to stop and take us in - how cute 😍 And to see some of the reviews on here that are quite negative - everyone has their views but they are way too harsh in my opinion!! We loved it

Disliked: The rain!! But not much the campsite could do about that And the sun did shine most the time So we were happy campers 🤩😍

Liked: Great pitches, clean and tidy site/showers and toilets. Friendly helpful staff. Good club room with lots going on, though rather crowded but did find a seat. Great location a 15 minute walk into Swanage across public footpath and 5 minute walk to the Helston stop for the Steam railway.

Local attractions

A five-minute drive gets you into Swanage for sandy walks, sandcastle building, splashing about and more serious watersports. To kayak round the cliffs and coves of the Jurassic Coast, make for Knoll beach (10 minutes' drive) or Lulworth Cove (40 minutes) to hire your craft and see the place from sea level. The 630 mile-long South West Coast Path passes through town: pick it up and head eastwards to the Studland and Godlington Heath Nature Reserve to see the wild and nature-filled Wessex that inspired Thomas Hardy (or hire a steed from the trekking centre for extra historical detail). Going west, the path goes past the splendid sights of Stair Hole and Durdle Door (40 minutes), while descents of varying steepness lead down to quiet and cove-like beaches like Winspit (accessible only on foot from Worth Matravers, 10 minutes away) and Kimmeridge (half an hour). For a spot of time travel, pick up the Swanage Railway for a nine-mile steam trip to Wareham, perhaps stopping off en route for a clamber round the ruins of Corfe Castle (10 minutes). Younger visitors should have a ball among the play barns, pedal go-karts and pettable animals at the Putlake Adventure Farm, five minutes away. Further afield, there are pony rides, deer safaris, tractor trips and bouncy castles at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (30 minutes), and at a similar distance the heavy hardware in The Tank Museum and the charming residents of Monkey World should keep everyone's monkeys out of mischief.
