Hardy types go camping in all sorts of weather, and good on them too, we say, as we wave them off with their tents in the depth of February. But, while we’re filled with admiration at those who pitch a canvas home on the side of a mountain before the daffodils come out, there’s a lot to be said for luxury camping too. A lot of luxury. Which is where Caalm Camp comes in, where owners Mark and Caryl have thoughtfully tested their toasty yurts in temperatures as low as -6, and found themselves with not a shiver in sight.

The six Mongolian yurts here are in deepest Dorset but just an hour from the M4 and M5 and have every little touch you could think of for a very caalm camping trip at any time of year: wood-burning stoves – with logs provided – for the cooler temperatures, an outside picnic table and barbecue for the warmer days, full electricity, electric sockets to charge up the gadgets (essential), crispy bed linen and fluffy towels, and even a hob for first-thing cuppas before getting out of your PJs (also essential). Yurts sleep up to six with a double bed and two day beds in each one; two extra beds can easily be added if you need them by saying so on the ‘special requests’ form when booking.

Each yurt comes with its own private and lockable shower room in The Old Hay Barn steps away, where there’s underfloor heating, hand driers and storage units for all your toiletry bits and bobs – no going across a campsite with your sponge bag around your neck here. The Hay Barn also has a big and plentifully-equipped communal kitchen where each yurt has its own fridge, cupboards and stacks of room to prepare food: make the mother of all fry ups then settle down in the comfy seats in the day room with its TV and children’s area…talk to other yurt-dwellers or just sit dreamily and gaze over the Dorset countryside; the choice is yours…

Elsewhere on the site there are chickens to feed on the farm, a wooded play area for little yurters, and a communal firepit to gather around with other guests at night to toast marshmallows, have a singsong or raise a glass to the spiffing surroundings. Fishing is available at Caalm Camp’s own lake or in the seven lakes at the neighbouring fishery, and for foodie supplies there’s a farm shop and the Kings Arms with top pub grub nearby.

As Caalm Camp is a farm site, dogs are not allowed.

Nearby attractions and activities

This area of Dorset is bursting with things to do from wildlife spotting to cycling to sunbathing on sandy beaches: start off with a walk to Duncliffe Wood, an ancient woodland a mile away from Caalm Camp and known for its carpets of bluebells in April and May, or clamber up to the prehistoric hill fort Hambledon Hill or to Bulbarrow, one of the highest hills in Dorset. There are two equestrian centres also nearby for lessons or a canter through the countryside, and several golf courses within half an hour’s drive.

Local town and city trips include Shaftesbury, where the famous Hovis ad with the poor baker’s boy pushing his bike to the top of a very high hill was filmed at Gold Hill and where there’s a Thursday market, pool, tea rooms and restaurants; Sherborne, with its abbey and castle; Wincanton for the racecourse, and Salisbury with its medieval cathedral, award-winning museums and outdoor market twice a week. Stonehenge is also within easy reach.

For tourist attractions, the Haynes International Car Museum and the Beaulieu Motor Museum are within reach for petrolheads, Corfe Castle and Old Wardour Castle for time travellers, and Longleat Safari Park, Monkey World and the Abbotsbury Swannery for mini zoologists.

Also easily accessible is the World Heritage Site the Jurassic Coast, about an hour’s drive away and packed with active options: try the cliff walks at Durdle Door, mackerel fishing, Punch and Judy and sand modelling at Weymouth, the sandy beaches at Studland or fossil-hunting at Charmouth.

Facilities are amazing the owners Mark and Caryl have thought of everything.
Having the private Wet room for solely our use was a real treat on a camping holiday.

Such a relaxing holiday in such beautiful ...

Disliked: Nothing at all!
