James Cagney said he was ‘top of the world’ on a storage tank in California, but we prefer to imagine him in Dorset shouting to his ma from Golden Top Holiday Park, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000 acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most toptastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by unspoiled Dorset countryside and part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – set in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Pitches are for tents, tourers and motorhomes, and amenities at the park are excellent overall – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop with three separate areas: gifts and local goods, groceries and a tourist information and coffee area. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket from reception to hook up.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has tennis, a sauna/steam room, a gym and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Nearby attractions and activities

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pit stop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country at 18 miles long.

A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting. Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth and the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips, seafood cafés and locally caught fish to go with your chips. Sporty types will find plenty to do alongside rambling the coastline, with sailing, tennis, diving and golf all nearby.

The park is two miles from the town of Bridport with its famous market introduced in the 16th century by Good Queen Bess – go along on Wednesdays or Saturdays for bargains in clothes, antiques and local produce and make that the kickstart of a shopping trip also covering the nearby towns of Dorchester, Sherborne and Beaminster.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, see the inhabitants at Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park or get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park. After a trip to one (or more) of these, they might not moan too much when you go to one of the more grownup West Dorset attractions: try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum, before relenting and taking the sprogs to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.

Liked: The view and location. The bathroom facilities were good and pretty clean despite the poor weather. The on site shop was well stocked and staff were very helpful.

Disliked: It would have been helpful to have some bins in the bathroom area, for discarding things like contact lense packets, shampoo bottles, tissues etc.

Liked: I liked the access to the beach, which is great for younger children as well as mature people with possible disabled issues to deal with. The park was clean and well cared for. The beach is dog friendly, but as far as cleanliness was concerned the beach was very clean with responsible owners. The park shop was ok not brilliant, supplied a limited amount of what i would call emergency items, bread, booze, milk etc ...

Disliked: However, I stayed in a 2 bed caravan for a week, the caravan had very very limited supply of cleaning apparatus, i.e only dustpan and brush. No mop or bucket was supplied or vacuum cleaner which i felt should have been there due to caravan being animal friendly. It was obvious that very little cleaning had been done prior to our arrival. Dog hairs clearly evident on the furniture and well worn into the ...
