Beer Youth Hostel
FavouriteThere’s a town called Alice and a youth hostel named Beer, which gets it points in the camping ‘stakes’ right away. And that’s even before you know that the hostel is set in a Victorian building in a hidden wooded valley – with the camping available on the old lord of the manor’s croquet lawn. I say!
You’ll not be surprised that a campsite on the edge of the village of Beer is laden with plenty of, well, beer, with the four-star facilities here including a restaurant pouring local ales, beer and wine as well as dishing up hearty home-cooked meals. You can even sample some local art while you’re sampling the foodie fare with the resident exhibition. And, if you’re rushing out of a morning to take advantage of all the local area has to offer, the friendly staff here can sort you out with breakfast and a packed lunch to keep you going – as well as give you all the info you need for a topping day out.
Nearby attractions and activities
Travellers on two wheels are well catered for too, with the National Cycle Network Route 2 going right past the campsite, and a bike shed on site with basic tools and bits and bobs to keep you rolling. There’s plenty of mountain biking nearby, along with canoeing, kayaking, horse-riding, sailing, fishing and of course ambling or cycling through the scenic countryside and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty all around.
Beer is right in the heart of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site so you can set out for the day for a spot of fossil-hunting, rock-pooling and exploring, or to take a fishing trip or hire a boat only 15 minutes’ walk from the site. The South Downs Way is also nearby for some of the country’s best scenic walking.
Even closer are the must-see Beer Quarry Caves and the Pecorama Pleasure Gardens with its miniature railway, both just a few minutes’ away. And if you want to combine a leisurely amble with some celeb-spotting, stroll eight miles to Axminster to the River Cottage where you could spot Chef Hugh or some of the other telly chefs, or take a class at the Cookery School.

Nice site in a beautiful area - Beer, Devon Jenna A. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The site was clean and flat for the tents to go on. The lounge was a big help for the morning it rained - we could keep dry and warm instead of freezing in our tent! Disliked: Lack of electrical points for the people camping - I had to use my hair dryer sitting on the floor in the middle of the landing. |

Bank holiday camping Luke J. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: Small and friendly campsite attached to a fully equiped youth hostel, offering clean bathrooms and kitchen area for both campers and hostelers alike. Disliked: Carparking was a bit tight and you can't park your car next to your tent/pitch but it is only a 50 metre walk away. |

A lovely, small site in a great location. CARRIE H. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The setting, on a former croquet lawn with views of surrounding woods. Disliked: The car park - a bit of a worry that we were going to get blocked in by campers who had gone off site. |
