See all facilities…Had a baaaad week at work? Filled with shear determination to have a woolly good break overflowing with luxury and glamour? Flock to Dartmoor Shepherds Huts for three unique ways to experience the moors: pitches here in the heart of Dartmoor National Park include grass tent spots, bell tent tipis and eco-friendly shepherd’s huts. You can mix and match when you book, so let the little lambs gambol in excitement by booking them their own tipi at a reduced price while ewe snooze in a shepherd’s hut next door.
The three huts are new to Dartmoor and are fully insulated with wool from the site’s own sheep, so remember to baaa thank you as you frolic past. And, while they’re traditional in style, the huts are properly modern and up to date: timber-built, fully equipped and sleeping up to four people (two in the double bed and another two on airbeds). Tipis sleep up to five and have detachable sides, so you can take in all the fresh Dartmoor air while lounging about and relaxing in proper style…
There are moor points here for the site’s location: pitches are in a peaceful Dartmoor valley with woodland views on one side and the Holy Brook babbling on the other, just outside the moorland village of Holne and in an area packed with activities for all ages and tastes. Naturally there are traditional Devonshire cream teas and the best of local produce around the area, but as it would be knit-picky to camp on Dartmoor and not cook over a traditional campfire too, all pitches have their own fire pits and wood is available to buy from the friendly owners.
Dartmoor Shepherds Huts is open all year round and welcomes well-behaved dogs.
Nearby attractions and activities
Food, glorious food...dive into the middle of the West Country’s larder to sample loads of local produce in the area’s restaurants and pubs: the Church House Inn a mile away at Holne shouldn’t prove to be too strenuous a walk back to base once you’ve munched your way through the fresh fish, Dartmoor venison or ploughman platters on offer.
If you decide that you need to walk off some Devonshire delights, you won’t be far away from plenty of scenic sights: there are heather-covered hills, wild Dartmoor ponies and walking routes all nearby, along with ancient archaeological landmarks such as stone circles, cairns and clapper bridges. Climb a tor to have your breath taken away again by the scenery below: this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a mix of woodland, reservoir, valley and cave habitats.
A few miles further afield, start off at the High Moorland Visitor Centre to find out everything you need to know about Dartmoor’s history, wildlife and culture, then go on a history tour to take in Buckfast Abbey and Devon’s castles or a wildlife trip to the area’s farm attractions Pennywell Farm, Totnes Rare Breed Farm and the Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. If you’ve had one too many cream teas (it’s easily done) and prefer to take in the scenery while sitting down, steam along to the South Devon Railway for valley views from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.
There are baleloads of family attractions in the area for you all to flock to: let the kids walk on water at the award-winning River Dart Country Park, ape the baboons and gorillas at Paignton Zoo or goggle at the sharks at the UK’s biggest aquarium, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.

Amazing setting - very peaceful and relaxing. Sophie S. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The family running the site were all very friendly and welcoming - being mid week and off main season we were the only people at the site for the first night, so we were treated with extra flowers in our vase - a lovely touch. We had our dog with us also and he loved running around in the open space! Disliked: Everything was brilliant other than the communal fridge smelt a bit off - possibly another camper had left some food in there, but just needed a wipe down and a fridge freshener in it. |

Lovely remote spot beware of possible noise at the farm next door Tatiana H. (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: Remote, picturesque, children friendly, campfire. Disliked: Well, it't not the fault of owner, but we (that's two mums and four kids under the age of 6) didn't have a wink of sleep on saturday night due to a massive party. That was noise from the farm next door (according to the owner), and it looked like it wasn't the first time. He said, that they were quite *angry people* to talk to, but well, it's his ... |

Lovely friendly campsite. Kate G. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: This is a really lovely friendly campsite. The toilet & shower facilities were basic but always clean and the shower always had hot water. The tent pitch had a fire pit and wood was available on the campsite, as well as other essentials, which was really handy. The campsite itself was laid out well with plenty of room to pitch the tent on the grass, and a small stream ran through the site which was nice ... Disliked: The only negative was the incredibly hard ground, take a hammer for the tent pegs is my advice! |

Disliked: Nothing to dislike about this site, its basic but beautiful. |

Camping that takes it back to basics Hindhaughgill (Young couple, 1 review, 2 photos)
Liked: There was no frills with this campsite. You had good toilet and shower facility, then it was just you, your tent and your campfire. Logs sold on site which is helpful if you forget to pack a few! Disliked: Could have some more toilet/ shower facilities save any queues forming. |

Shepherds hut delight Karen M. (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: We loved the ease of staying in the Shepherds hut, all the best bits of camping with none of the drawbacks!! The hut was clean, warm, cosy and very comfy. The site is small and rural, basic but adequate, you are in the camping field but there are only a few pitches and they are all very well spread out. There is a stream running through the site and a small ford to get over ... Disliked: Nothing |

Back to basics camping...but we loved it. Charlotte T. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The campsite was a great size and did not feel anything like a holiday park. The Children loved playing in the stream that ran through the campsite and the woods also provided an excellent playground. We purposely booked this campsite because we like traditional camping and not having any mod cons. Disliked: Farm was hard to find, could do with a few more signs. Thanks to the lady in the local tearoom in Holne we were able to find it!! |

Liked: The accommodation was all ready for our arrival, really clean and with lovely extras like the daffodils inside and the bed was really comfortable. Despite the freezing weather we really enjoyed our stay, everyone was friendly and helpful. It is a beautiful spot and for anyone looking to get back to nature in a secluded setting then I would recommend this site. Showers and toilets were simple, clean and serviceable. The site is a short ... Disliked: The weather! |
