You’ll strike gold with a family holiday or short break at Golden Sands Holiday Park, on the doorstep of some of Devon’s top scenic spots and family attractions, a short stroll away from the famous Dawlish Warren beach and nature reserve and with a goldmine of first-class facilities and entertainment on offer.
As it’s a Park Holidays site, Golden Sands is aimed towards making your break as hassle-free as possible: the excellent amenities in this lush countryside location include heated indoor and outdoor pool complexes, a sports area, letting the young’uns go Loopy at the on-site kids’ club, the amusements or the Adventure Land Play Area, and a dining area and takeaway at good-value prices; there’s also a mini mart shop to pick up essentials, and a launderette and washing up area for whoever you can bribe to do the chores.
The clubhouse has free wifi and Sky Sports, with internet (and sports) packages available for a reasonable extra charge, perfect for pool and patio lounging. Guests can also use the facilities at the other Park Holidays site nearby, Dawlish Sands, where there’s an entertainment venue with live acts in the evening as well as an indoor and outdoor pool.
Dawlish Warren and the area around Golden Sands are justifiably popular with families: the beach is safe and sandy, backed with pretty dunes, and packed with good old-fashioned seaside fun - think fairground attractions, crazy golf and ice creams among more - and then there’s the nature reserve, and the spectacular short train journey along the seawall to Teignmouth, for a bargainous £3 (take the line in the other direction and it will bring you to the city lights of Exeter).
As of 2013 Golden Sands has merged with the former Park Holidays site Peppermint Park.
Nearby attractions and activities
Dawlish Warren is a safe and clean family beach with all the old-fashioned activities kids will clamour for: Punch and Judy, amusements and crazy golf among the decorative dunes, as well as chuffing along the sea wall on the train journey to Teignmouth or wandering among the wildfowl and wading birds at the Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve.
Slightly further afield there are coastal resorts like Paignton and Torquay, cantering on horseback in Exmoor National Park and exploring the gardens and history of Devon: the secret gardens of Powderham Castle will keep the kids enthralled, and they’ll also have a swashbuckling time at the Golden Hind, the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s sixteenth century ship moored at Brixham.
Little monkeys will have a Tarzanly swinging time on the zip slides at Exeter’s Go Ape!, and if they’ve still got a bit too much energy for your liking, take them to burn it off with paintball at the Ashcombe Adventure Centre or brave the Maximus rollercoaster at Crealy Great Adventure Park. Once they’re sitting still, it’s time for some peaceful sightseeing while playing the ‘let’s see who can keep quiet the longest game’: the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam and cruises along the River Dart are both recommended to keep even little people spellboundingly quiet.
Or you could just pack everyone up and head out of Golden Sands to see where your feet or pedals take you: this area of the country is renowned for its walking and cycling routes, whether you’re cruising along the coastline, foraging through forests, ambling through the area’s villages or making your way around spectacular Dartmoor.

muddy but fun first time campers! MATTHEW P. (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: - the linked parks within walking distance for entertainment - these parks had plenty to occupy the children - close shower block - plenty of room in the tent area Disliked: - shower block could have been cleaner - roads leading to camping area very mud locked (car stuck for 30 mins) could do with some traction tracks installed on the incline to the field

I thought the campsite was excellent. Very disappointed in the cleanliness and hygiene of the toilets and shower blocks Trevor_L (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos)

Staying at Golden Sands for two nights Rose H. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The facilitiesas they were always clean Disliked: The noise from other campers, especially those with large families, feel there should be a seperate pitch for adults to seperate the families. Also, feel that some of the fields need patrolling as we experienced several couples arguing agressively and using poor language. This was not relaxing and made us feel very anxious. |
