They say it’s the little things that count - at Hawkchurch Country Park, near Axminster in East Devon, they certainly keep an eagle eye on the details that make all the difference: smiley, happy service from the staff, yummy, well-priced food in the restaurant, genuinely dog-friendly facilities, even heated towel rails in the showers... Add in the pretty views of the Axe Valley and the site’s proximity to the Jurassic Coast and a range of top attractions, and it sounds like the perfect formula for some Devon-based downtime.
The facilities include smart free showers and loos (a 3/4 minute walk from the tenting fields), a laundry room, a children’s playground, dog walking area, a shop packed with all the essentials, and a bar and restaurant. Pitches are set in tranquil grassy meadows encircled by mature trees and hedgerows, and the picture-perfect village of Hawkchurch is a few minutes away for those in search of a country inn.
Nearby attractions and activities
The friendly staff at Hawkchurch Country Park can ply you with helpful tourist information, but highlights include: the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, just fifteen minutes away, sprinkled with attractive, historic seaside towns such as Lyme Regis (famous for its Cobb harbour, fossils and Jane Austen links); medieval Forde Abbey, a stunning former monastery set in 30 acres of gardens, and with a great “pick your own” farm on site; croquet lawns, grottoes and Elizabethan grandeur at Mapperton House; or the Seaton open air tramway, which will transport you on a romantic trip alongside the estuary of the River Axe, through nature reserves teeming with wading birds.
There’s probably no need to mention that this is some of the most fertile territory in England for gourmets: clotted cream, scrumpy, fresh fish, farmhouse cheeses, ice cream, Devonshire teas - plus a cluster of top chefs in the area. Start in the pretty local market town of Axminster, and follow your nose...

Liked: The wonderful shower block which was clean, well lit, and spider free! My morning shower was hot and powerful. I dried my hair with the provided hairdriers at the mirrors while my towel dried on the heated towel rail. Luxury! Disliked: Could not find anywhere to dispose of hot ash from our BBQ on the morning that we left. Obviously didnt want to put this in the main bins incase of fire, and didnt want to leave out or throw into the hedgerow, unsure what we were expected to do. |

Liked: Good site not far from the A35 Disliked: well there was 1 problem we could not get Hot water from the shower, the site sent a plumber to fix it the next day but we still could not get hot water from the shower. We had to use the toilet block for a shower bit of a nuisance means getting dressed twice |

Excellent Debbie W. (Mature couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The static was really lovely. Obviously fairly new as it had a for sale sign on the side saying new 2012. Spacious, clean and everything you could need. Disliked: Nothing. Only comment is that it really could do with a mat in the shower as both myself and my husband slipped on the floor. Only a small thing and the only thing I can say was needed. |

Camping near Lyme Regis Michelle t. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The location and views were lovely Disliked: The showers and sinks were not as clean as I would have liked and I don't think relying on people to mop the floor after their shower is enough. |
Facebook Twitter Google Plus |
Liked: Friendly helpful staff, nice clean toilets, lovely views from the non electric tent field, the shop was also well priced. Perfect location for seeing the local area Disliked: No plug sockets in the showers, so as we were staying on the non electric pitches, there was no where to plug in straightners (girls problem!), or just to give your phone a quick charge while doing your teeth, which you would normally find on campsites. Also the shower heads were straight down from the ceiling, so it was hard to have a shower without getting your hair soaking wet, and personally i don't ... |

Overall we had a good time - especially when the sun came out !! Steve M. (Mature couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: Camping meadows were large and had great views from the higher ground. Disliked: The grass was a little long with lots of cut grass lying about. As the weather was wet this made things quite messy around the tent. |

Good apart from showers Juliet W. (Family with older children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The staff, the site, the shop, the view from the campsite. Everything except the showers. Disliked: The showers - in the women's block one of four wasn't working, one was blocked, one had only a dribble of water, and just one worked as it was meant to. An extra hook in each cubicle would be brilliant, too, and wouldn't break the bank. Such a shame - everything else is good but showers are such a vital part of being able to feel presentable and human while camping!

Liked: Camping 1st time with 2 young kiddies, we had a fun time at hawchurch country park. The kids loved the play area which very conviently is opposite the bar, so we could have a drink and watch while they played. Toliet and shower block was clean and pleasant enough with hairdryers, showers were always hot. There is also a family shower room which was handy. We visited seaton trams which my boys loved! We would ... Disliked: The weather rained alot, but thats uk hols for you! The food was fairly good in the restaurant, however both me and my husband did recieve burnt garlic bread and my son had a glass with lipstick on it. |

Excellent facilities, shame about the weather Jane B. (Family with older children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: Good, fairly flat field to camp in, not too far from hot showers and clean toilets. Site is very well maintained, facilities good, shop reasonably priced. Could do with more showers nearer the tent field, but on the whole very pleased with what we found. Disliked: The people in the tent next to us talking til gone 1 in the morning, when we checked in the curfew times were not really pointed out to us, but we are quiet and read the brochure we were given. The people next door obviuosly didn't, maybe the person who checks you in could make more of the quiet times to each group as this was very disturbing - they woke us up and then ...

Dear Jane B. Thank you for your review which was both informative and honest. I take on board your comments regarding our 'quiet times', and as a direct result of your feedback, my team will be organising some signage down in the camping meadow & talking this through with our guests upon check-in. We all look forward to welcoming you back to Hawkchurch Country Park when you holiday with us again. Jacqui Daniels, Park Manager. |

Liked: Shop Disliked: Ladies / family showers were not working properly. Family shower did not have hot water, which was horible with 2 toddlers waiting. The ladies shower was nothing more than a very hot trickle of water. (tried multiple days) Very frustrating.

Liked: Beautiful campsite. Lovely location. Very busy during the bank holiday weekend but still not a problem. Good value for money. Disliked: Shower blocks could do with something better than a mop to clean the floor with, maybe a rubber broom like in the caravan block so you can push the water rather than spreading it...
From the manager...
Dear Ian_T. Thank you for your constructive feedback. We agree these would be a great idea and we will be ordering them as a direct result of your comments. Jacqui Daniels - Park Manager. |

First time family of four with dog camping trip steverosetti (Family with older children, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: Everything. Nice reasonably level camping field close to toilet block and washing up facilities. Toilets and shower facilities although sometimes busy (peak times) were clean and spacious. Showers very warm, loved heated towel rails. Staff nice and friendly. Site well kept and tidy. Nice bar and clubhouse with reasonable prices. Relaxed quiet atmosphere in a beautiful location. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would like to return. Disliked: Only small criticism if any, would be that on arrival, you could be given more information in the welcome folder with regards to location of waterpoints (not marked on layout map of site) and itinerary of activities. |

HAWKCHURCH CAMP SITE angie246 (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: The sevice in the bar i.e kevin was lovely he really looked after us and made us feel welcome. The entertainment on saturday night was really good we loved singinng along and having a boogie. The showers and toilets were clean and well maintained and the food we had on saturday night and sunday morning was a bigger improvement on the night and morning before hand. Disliked: the breakfast menu was unfair, you had the traditional breakfast which had one sausage, one bacon, one egg, beans, tom, mushrrom for £4.95 and the kids breakfast was exactly the same just without the mushrooms for £2.95 the traditional one just seemed a bit pathetic to me. Also i found the activities not very well explained and a lil too expensive for waht you do and us been a big family can get ... |

Wow! what a hidden Gem! stuartmfrost (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: 1. The hot showers. Disliked: The fact that they had a superb facility in the bar and clubhouse that did not offer a hot breakfast. Even if it was open between 08.00 and 10.00 and cooked the breakfast fresh, it would be so welcome on the last day camping, you could pack up the stove the night before. |

Hi Kathleen W. Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately the Family Room shower was out of action over the weekend, as someone accidently snapped the shower hose fitting off. We promptly ordered a new shower unit and I am pleased to confirm the Family Shower room is fully operational again. Jacqui Daniels - Park Manager.
