  • Quiet and comfort in a private orchard in north Cornwall
  • Two minutes' to St Kew Highway shops and pub; 10 minutes to Port Isaac
  • Four fab beaches, Padstow and Tintagel Castle in half an hour or less
Days touring vineyards and exploring the wilderness, followed by evenings watching the sunset over the fruit trees while you cook on the campfire… sounds like you’re on safari. The folk at Safari Cornwall were inspired by their travels in Kenya to bring the experience back home. You won’t meet many wildebeest in this nook of north Cornwall but you’ll stay in comfort, surrounded by nature in a spot stuffed with opportunities. With their woodburning stoves, the glamping units are cosy in the colder months but cool in summer, and all are surrounded by a private orchard. You can also hire the hot tub: perhaps as a place to relax with a glass of the local Camel Valley Vineyard’s champagne…? Two minutes’ drive or a 15-minute walk away, the village of St Kew has shops and a pub with grub. The pretty coloured houses and the steep lanes of Port Isaac are 10 minutes away, packed with opportunities for seafood guzzling and souvenir shopping and a fine point to join the clifftop South West Coast Path for a bracing walk.

Route directions

From Camelford, follow the A39 towards Wadebridge. After six miles, the road will open out where it has been improved, with a big layby on the right-hand side. After this layby there is a turning on the right onto an unmarked lane that leads back towards the way you came. As you go up the lane there is a Safari sign. Turn right into the drive and head towards the white gate, then go through and park by the container.

Local attractions

Beach and sea fans have plenty of choice along this coast: Port Gaverne (15 minutes' drive) for rockpoolers, Port Quin (20 minutes) for sea kayaking round the cliffs, Polzeath (20 minutes) for surfing, and Daymer’s wide sands and gentle tides (25 minutes) for paddling. Those with an urge to wander could carry on the cliff trail as long as they like (there’s 380 miles of it, after all), or follow the more modest Saint’s Way inland between Padstow (half an hour) and Fowey (45 minutes) in a day. Easier treks for shorter legs can be found on the Camel Trail, a nature-filled hiking and biking route following the Camel estuary. If you’ve got a taste for safaris from the site, take a maritime one from Padstow harbour, zooming out across the Atlantic to spot seals and basking sharks and pods of dolphins. Nature of a tamer kind can be admired at the famed Lost Gardens of Heligan (50 minutes), while fans of history and all things with turrets and moats mustn't miss a trip to Tintagel’s fab castle (25 minutes), said to be the seat of King Arthur. Thrill rides, water fights and meerkat and crocodile encounters at Camel Creek Adventure Park (20 minutes) add a final touch of the exotic to your Cornish safari.
