General

  • Flat level grass pitches with easy access from the A30
  • A mile from a surfing beach; free shuttle available in school holidays
  • Adventure play area, swings, shop and games room

Small and friendly, family run and a mere mile from the first-rate Cornish beach of Porthtowan… this is a peaceful and well located place for Cornwall breaks.

Porthtowan Tourist Park is in a quiet countryside setting, on the edge of Porthtowan village surrounded by fields and country lanes – but is only a couple of miles from the A30 and has easy access to Truro, Portreath, Tehidy Country Park and the South West Coast Path. A free shuttle bus runs in school holidays.

This is an award-winning park, with modern facilities maintained to a high standard. There's a games room and adventure play area for leisurely times indoors or out; a tourist information room for plotting your next Cornish stopoff, and a food shop open daily – you'll be chuffed to hear that barbecues are allowed on site too...

Among the well-kept amenities are a launderette, a washing-up area and a disabled-friendly toilet and shower block.

Dogs are welcome on site.

Had a very warm welcome at reception and the pitches were straightforward. Felt secure with the fob access and knowing the car access gate was locked at 11pm. The showers and toilets were very clean and the best I've experienced camping! The shower temperature and pressure was perfect. The campsite was nice and quiet and everyone was really friendly. The staff were amazing being extremely helpful, welcoming and despite a very busy hot and tiring summer season really cheerful! We had a great experience and loved the little shop which had all the essentials for camping like milk, bacon, disposable bqqs and matches. Loved that there were different bins to encourage recycling and the multiple charging and water points. I would highly recommend staying here! :)

First impressions, absolutely lovely site with very well kept grounds with flower beds ,picnic areas and trees that divide up the site making for a slightly, more private pitch areas. The facilities are spotlessly clean and very modern. The site is managed by a lovely couple, Andrew and Angie who are really friendly and make you feel very welcome indeed. Check out the website for all that this site has to offer but trust me, you will have a great time here.

Fabulous time, loved the spacious pitches, layout of site, cleanliness of everything, separate wet suit area, good laundry and washing up facilities. A secure site, barrier controlled which gave you comfort to let kids play.

Loved the little bench hidden inside the bushes!

Angie, Andrew, James and Malcolm are just wonderful and they do their utmost to make you welcome and your stay as comfortable as possible. The little shop serves coffee and Angie will be busy in the morning preparing hot pastries for anyone wishing to partake.

Kids liked the game room and the area just outside where you can sit and admire the flowers and shrubs planted there.
Other traders are on site - coffee man on Tues, Thurs and Sat if I remember rightly. Pizza night on Wed and Taco van I believe was Friday.

We didn't use the free shuttle bus to the beach but plenty of others did.

    Will happily return.

Location was great, within 20 miles of St Ives, Newquay, Falmouth. 1 mile from beach which a free shuttle bus runs each day. Easy access to Redruth where there was a choice of shops for supplies, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Morrisions, Iceland

Well kept site, beautiful grounds, grass very well kept, level pitches.

Excellent facilities, clean showers & toilets. Even had sink cubicles for wash if you didn't want to shower.

Washing up area best we've seen. Washing up bowl, and drainer supplied in each sink.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Made to feel very welcome.

    Disliked:

Was nothing we disliked about the site to give reason not to return.

Felt the rules for children playing could have been a little more relaxed within reason, ie at appropriate times of the day for kids running around.

As a suggestion there could have been a little more lighting for night time, ie some low level lighting.

Really lovely site, exceptionally clean and very spacious pitches. Pizza van on a Wednesday made the most amazing traditional pizzas and we had hot pastries straight from the oven on site every morning.

    Disliked:

Shower facilities were really clean but the showers were lukewarm and really needed to be hotter.

Caravans and towing route: westbound on the A30, pass the Chiverton Cross roundabout and the Falmouth exit, taking the slip road signposted "Redruth/Portreath/Porthtowan". Take the third exit from the roundabout and continue on a winding road for 2 miles into the valley. At the T-junction turn right and you will find us on your left at the top of the hill.

Local attractions

Stick to the north coast area, venture inland, or head down to Falmouth and the south coast, all within easy driving distance of here.

Within walking distance, the beach of Porthtowan is a popular spot for surfers and families, with plenty of rockpools and caves to explore around its scenic wide stretch of sand. The site is also a short walk from the South West Coast Path – hike the up and down trail to Portreath four or so miles west – and near the Mineral Tramways trail, 14 mostly traffic-free miles from Portreath to Devoran down on the south coast near Falmouth.

Shops, restaurants, bars and river boat trips are all at Truro a few miles away; also take time to see the museum, and, if you're around on Wednesday or Saturday, to mooch around the Truro farmers' market on Lemon Quay.

Gardens? Several are in the area, with the National Trust's Trerice and Glendurgan the closest to the site. Or gold? Take a trip to Cornwall Gold Centre on the Portreath Road, to pan for gold, have a go at pottery, or just look significantly at your significant other over the gold, silver and pearl jewellery for sale.

For family cycling or walking, Tehidy Country Park just outside Portreath is flat and buggy-friendly, and leads out to spectacular views for smashing picnics. More actively, try SK8 Skate Park and The Track, Sithians Lake for watersports and Camel Creek Adventure Park at Wadebridge.

Must see

  • Cornwall Industrial Discovery Centre (3.4 miles)
  • Truro Cathedral (8.3 miles)
  • Lappa Valley Steam Railway (10.7 miles)
