Dolbeare Park

7.9 Favourite

There probably isn’t enough room on the mantelpiece for all the awards heaped on Dolbeare Park, which is a David Bellamy Conservation Award Gold winner, was the first touring park in Cornwall to get Gold level at the Green Tourist Business Scheme, and even won the Loo of the Year Platinum Award in 2013 for its pristine facilities. Whew.

Apart from all its green creds and bling, this Saltash site is the place to come to if you want a traditional, laid back kind of holiday – it’s family-centred, there’s no bar or clubhouse (although you can buy scrummy Cornish scrumpy, wine and beer in the park off licence), and summer events include barbecues, cricket, rounders, archery, boules and squaring up on the giant outdoor chess board or over the giant Connect 4. You might even see a few rabbits hopping about in the evenings...

Amenities at Dolbeare are of the highest standards – the immaculate shower block has underfloor heating, family washrooms, up to date disabled facilities, hair dryers and a ladies’ make-up area with an electric point for hair straighteners. The shop on site sells freshly baked bread and local produce, and if you’re too relaxed even to make a sandwich there’s a takeway too: tuck into the one of the yummy bacon baguettes while browsing through the Dolbeare information centre where there are maps and guides on Devon and Cornwall as well as the park’s own guides on essential topics such as where to eat, where to walk and the local beaches.

Nearby attractions and activities

Cornwall gets busy in the summer, but you wouldn’t know it from this peaceful corner which most visitors whizz past without stopping...the only problem will be trying to narrow down what to do from the tons of active and relaxing things on offer in this almost forgotten corner of the south-east. The Rame Peninsula is a must, especially Cawsand and Kingsand and walking around the coastal path, and surfers should take their boards to the beautiful beaches of Whitsand Bay. The area also has some excellent diving such as Scylla at Whitsand Bay, and golfers can tee off too at St Mellion just a few miles away from the park.

Canny campers can go tree surfing and off-road mountain biking up in the Tamar Valley, quarry jump at nearby Adrenalin Quarry, canoe the Tamar River with Canoe Tamar, or take the Plym Trail or Camel Trail cycle paths for family exploring.

History and culture are abundant too, with several National Trust properties in the area as well as other cultural spots including Anthony House and Gardens, famous for Alice in Wonderland; Saltram House featured in Sense and Sensibility and the former home of Sir Francis Drake, Buckland Abbey.

Also on the very long must-do list is a trip around Devon to take in highlights including Bigbury on Sea, walking on Dartmoor or just relaxing with a drink at the Noss Mayo pubs. The north coast beaches are only 40 minutes away with local favourites Fowey and Polkerris, and Plymouth shouldn’t be missed either, with the largest aquarium in the UK, a huge outdoor swimming pool and the Life Centre, with massive indoor pool, climbing centre, bowling, children's activities and a family activity centre.

Plymouth is also the spot for some fantastic food and restaurants, with full-on foodies also having the option to try the luscious location and food at The View restaurant, featured on Caroline Quentin's Cornwall and only 20 minutes from Dolbeare.

Liked: The park was quiet and friendly. We stayed for three weeks and found all the facilities were clean and well maintained. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere on the park was good.
We enjoyed the Easter egg hunt with our grandchildren over the holiday weekend.
The play area was useful when we had visiting children and is always tidy and litter free.
There are so many awards the walls can't ...

Disliked: Nothing, we had a very enjoyable stay.

Liked: There is nothing to like as we were shown the door and never returned even though we had paid for 3 nights

Disliked: I would advise campers to take note of the unreasonable arrival and departure times. We rang before hand to advise we would be arriving just after 8pm. Once we arrived we were asked to pay another £20 each on top of the £70 each that we had already paid. The owner advised us to pay or leave and come back tomorrow. As we felt 8.15pm was not an unreasonable time we were shown the ...

Hi Ben, thank you for your review - we are sorry that we did not meet your expectations. Bookings made via PitchUp.com clearly show the permitted arrival time is between 12.00 and 18.00. For guests arriving after this time we publish our late arrival charges. You gave us no notification that you would be late - you telephoned at 8.06pm for directions, arrived at 8.25pm, declined to pay the late arrival charge and did not return the following day. We are not sure what you mean by unreasonable departure times - we think 11am is very fair.

Liked: Pitches were flat and well drained
Toilets and showers were very clean
Assault course
Croissants

Disliked: Could do with a slide and swings for the kids
Kids not allowed to play chess
Wifi too expensive

Thank you for your comments and suggestions - swings may well be a good idea in the future.

Many children do get a great deal of enjoyment out of playing chess and it's lovely to see them discussing strategies and tactics.

However, when children abuse the chess set either by using it as target practice with their balls, kicking it, seeing how high they can throw the pieces and how far they can stuff the king in the mouth of the rubbish bear - sometimes enough really is enough!

It is very disheartening for us seeing our lovely chess set being abused. Well behaved children though, are always very welcome to play chess.

We believe that our WiFi fees are competitive with other sites.

Liked: Not being much of a camping fan, I liked the fact of being able to hire a Eurotent, which meant the tent was up and standing when we arrived and it had everything you need and more, like microwave, tv and even a double bed with mattress.
The Campsite was easy to find. There was lots of information for things to do. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The only downside was the internet connection. The campsite offered wi fi for a charge of £12. It was essential for me to be able to check my emails, unfortunately the connection kept disconnecting and I only managed to check my mail once in the week we've been there.
I would advise to use the computer on site which I think only cost 40 pence for 20 minutes.

Thank you for your comments, we really do appreciate these.

We wish you had told us during your stay that you were experiencing problems with the WiFi (the system shows you connected four times in total, with one of those being for a short time as the download was just 1.60mb, the remaining connections were around 9.00mb each).

We believe that you may have been connected to the wrong transmitter as the transmitter is just a short distance from the Eurotent and you should have received excellent WiFi. Other guests who have stayed in the Eurotent have had no problems with the WiFi.

Directions

Get directions

Dolbeare Park is very easy to find and well signposted. Once you are here there is plenty to see and do in Devon as well as Cornwall.

We're quick and easy to get to - via the M5 and A38 dual carriageway all the way up to the roundabout at Saltash. Then it's just four miles (with overtaking lanes) to Dolbeare Park. There are no long and twisty narrow roads stuck behind a tractor! We're just one mile off the A38 up and over a slight hill.

Take the A38 to Landrake (between Saltash and Liskeard) and turn north next to the bright blue pedestrian footbridge accross the A38, signposted to Dolbeare Park and to Blunts, then follow our signs for 3/4 mile keeping to the left at the fork and you will find us on the right.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.
