Golden Lion Inn - Lakeside Camping

6.9 Favourite

It’s bottoms up at the tranquil Golden Lion Inn Lakeside Camping on the shores of Stithians Lake, where you can enjoy a tipple and some top-notch pub grub at the inn just a flower bed away, either in the oak-beamed bar in front of one of the three log fires, or al fresco overlooking the award-winning gardens. And there’s no need to worry about not catching your zzzzzzz’s after an evening out – the pub is food and family-oriented so there’s no concern about shenanigans after closing time.

There’s a choice of electric and non-electric spots on the all-level pitches for your tent, tourer or motorhome, and the site also has internet access as well as fishing and (non-motorised) watersports available. It’s within easy reach of local towns Redruth, Falmouth, Helston and Truro, and is less than an hour’s drive from the award-winning Eden Project.

Nearby attractions and activities

If you can drag yourself away from the Golden Lion Inn, you’ll find loads of active options nearby. This area is said to be among the windiest in Cornwall, so grab your wetsuit and go to the Stithian Lakes Watersports Centre, just 100 yards away from the park and with sailing and canoeing as well as windsurfing hire and tuition. There’s also a climbing wall, trim trail, children’s play area, Wow balls and fishing available, or you can take a lakeside walk or a picnic if the day’s a bit too still for surfing.

Relax on the beach or catch the waves there instead – north and south coast beaches are a 15 minute drive away. Hire a bike at the site and check out the local cycle trails or go mountain biking, or at a canter with the horse-riding available nearby. Golf, tennis and the attractions Poldark Mine and Flambards Theme Park are also within easy reach.

Stithians Showground is just five minutes away and has regular events throughout the year, from the Stithian Show in July to the West of England Steam Engine Society with Steam Rally, the VW Owners Club and the YFC Country Fair in August, as well as events organised by local groups including horse shows and dog agility clubs.

Liked: Small and friendly site within a sheltered lawn.
Great food at the pub.
Very reasonably priced.
Good access to north and south coast.

Disliked: Toilets and showers are very basic and could do with a overhaul.
Would really benefit from more hooks to hang clothes while washing and showering.
Toilets are in desperate need of air freshener!

Liked: Ok so the lake was nice.

Disliked: Toilets and showers are in poor condition.
NO HOT Water sink available for washing up - and then only one sink outside by the toilets which had only cold water and was full of 'gunge'. No where to wash clothes which is a serious consideration if you are a family staying for a week or more. Whilst the site itself was reasonably quiet, there is road noise and be warned, there is another campsite on the ...

Liked: Very clean and tidy, beautiful quiet location on the side of the river, couldn't ask for more. Excellent rates that included electric hookup.
Tucked away out of the town but not too far
Morrish's fish and chips in redruth are the best ever tasted.

Liked: pitch 11 was a great size, the pub staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was fantastic, the site was great value for money, its nice quiet and peaceful situated next to a lake,

My overall review of the site is its an excellent place to stay if you are looking for value for money camping, its quite basic but adequate for your needs so if your looking for the ritz dont stay here ...

Disliked: the weather was terrible (obviously not the campsites fault), keycodes on toilet/shower doors were a little hard for young children to open,
could have done with a mop and bucket in the shower area so people could clean up after themselves.
pitch 11 was a little lumpy (but that just me being picky)
the food was a tad expensive but very nice

Liked: It's a picturesque, small camp site close to a lake. You do feel like you're in the countryside, unlike some of the larger sites.

Disliked: Pitch 1 is tiny! Luckily we were able to move after the 1st night but we do not feel it should be counted as a 'proper' pitch. With our 4 man tent we were nearly on the path and had hardly any space around the tent for stove/chairs, etc. Perhaps it should be kept aside as a spare in case anyone turns up with no booking (and a small tent!). I know somebody else ...

Liked: The privacy each plot allowed everyone there. It was central for all attractions in south Cornwall, everything within an hours drive. Nice clean showers and toilets, which we found to be very spacious at no extra cost. Very friendly and helpful staff at the Golden Lion.

Disliked: Only thing we disliked was it is in the middle of no-where, therefore with out a car there's not a lot to do of an evening.
