Siblyback Lake Campsite
FavouriteBordered by the tors and moors of Bodmin, this roomy lakeside campsite at Siblyback Lake Country Park offers a good range of water- and land-based activities for all ages and abilities.
Visitors can hire out windsurfers, rowing boats, kayaks and sailing dinghies (or bring their own), and there are friendly instructors on site for tuition, if needed. A new cable wakeboarding system, the only clockwise system in the UK, has also been installed recently. For two-wheelers, a pretty three-mile cycle path snakes around the lake to make the best of the wonderful views, and is also fully accessible to wheelchair users.
The tranquil lake by Siblyback Lake Campsite offers excellent walking and birdwatching, and is renowned among fly fishermen thanks to its teeming trout. It’s a Trout Master fishery, which means that if you catch a whopper it’ll be entered into the eponymous nationwide competition; see if you can beat Siblyback’s current record of a 10lb 8oz rainbow trout. Even if you don’t net the big one, you should still manage a decent catch: recent years have seen rod averages of three fish per angler. Fishing permits (available on site; fly fishing only) are required for everyone over 12 years of age.
Little monkeys will enjoy the high ropes course, archery and water-zorbing balls. The site also features two play areas for toddlers and older children, as well as a pleasant lakeside café serving snacks, light meals and the understandably ubiquitous Cornish cream tea.
Nearby attractions and activities
The Lux Park Leisure Centre close to Siblyback has a good pool and offers a range of exercise classes.
Atmospheric Bodmin is the highest and most sparsely populated area of Cornwall, a land of myth and mystery. Close to Siblyback are Dozmary Pool, alleged to be the final resting place of King Arthur’s Excalibur, and the moody Hurlers, three stone circles reputedly formed when a group of men who dared to play games on the Sabbath Day were turned to stone. You’ll find the highest pub in Cornwall in the neighbouring village of Minions. Also worth a look is Cheeswring, an improbably precarious tower of balancing rock said to have been created by warring giants and saints.
If you’re interested in the more recent history of the area, visit the China Clay Heritage Centre at Wheal Martyn for an insight into what was once one of Cornwall’s biggest industries.
Other potential trips include a tour of the global greenery under the massive domes of the Eden Project, which lays on special activities for kids in the summer holidays, including circus skills, den building and water play; the seaside resort of Looe, which is actually two towns in one, linked by a bridge over an inlet where you can watch the fishing boats bring in their catch; and the quaint, if touristy, fishing village of Polperro, where cars are banned from the narrow streets, although you can catch a horse drawn carriage to reach the pretty harbour.
As well as the many great beaches nearby, children will enjoy a day at Crealy Adventure Park meeting the animals, scrambling around the play areas, and being spun around and splashed about on the exciting rides.

Friendly helpful staff, great facilities, wonderful views, level pitch Gill S. (Solo traveller-female, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: Being greeted by friendly helpful staff is a good start to any trip. The camping pitches are level and not too far from the facilities. The views over Siblyback Lake and the surrounding countryside are stunning. The site is very quiet and peaceful. And there are some very interesting walks nearby featuring beautiful scenery and ancient monuments. The town of Liskeard is only 10 minutes away and that has everything one needs in the way ... Disliked: Nothing! |

Nice site in a gorgeous setting Paula C. (Family with older children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: Small site - only 20 odd pitches. Loved the setting. Peace & quiet. Water sports available on the lake and there's a park and a high ropes course. Disliked: Pitches a bit sandy so this gets into the tent but you're on a lakeside so to be expected. |
