Franchis Holidays
FavouriteMulling over a trip to Cornwall but want to avoid the hordes? Pitch up at the peaceful Franchis Holiday Park just outside the village of Mullion on the lovely Lizard Peninsula, where the generously-sized pitches spread across four acres mean that you’ll never know the peril of having a stranger snoring two feet away from your tent. Not here, anyway...
Franchis Holiday Park is set between farm and woodland in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with just 57 pitches across the whole park and with a separate field near a woodland stream set aside for tents. Despite the space, there are numerous taps all around to save a long walk in the morning to fill up the kettle (always a bonus), and there’s a shop open on site during busy times to supply the morning cuppa milk and other essentials. For bigger shops or eating out, Mullion is within a couple of minutes’ drive and the town of Helston is five miles away; there’s tourist info on site too if you want to head further afield.
Other facilities include two shower and loo blocks with free hot water, a free freezer for ice packs and a launderette. There are books to borrow if you’ve forgotten your bedtime reading: you’ll have to read by torchlight as lighting on the campsite is kept to a minimum for max appreciation of the night sky and the local wildlife. Reading by torchlight while bats and owls fly and hoot overhead? Now that’s also a bonus…
Nearby attractions and activities
It’s Cornwall, so the area around Franchis Holiday Park is laden with beaches, coves, sightseeing, surfing and walking: just south of Mullion village lie the Predannack Downs with cliffs along to the picture-perfect Kynance Cove, and the South-West Coast Path runs a couple of miles from the campsite. The River Helford and its valleys are a few miles to the east; look out for Frenchman’s Creek, used as the setting for Daphne Du Maurier’s historical novel of the same name.
There are picturesque villages dotted all around this part of the west Cornwall coastline, including the old fishing village of Cadgwith and its 300 year old Cadgwith Cove Inn, dishing up lobster and seafood landed that day. Mullion, closest to Franchis Holidays, is the biggest village in the Lizard and the town of Helston should be on the visit list for a taste trip to sample Spingo, the local brew.
A drive of 13 miles brings sightseers to the bigger settlements of Falmouth and Penzance, with countless coves, Cornish attractions and activities for land and sea: gardens, galleries, castles, theatres and museums are all here, with Land’s End and the legendary St Michael’s Mount close to hand. Poldark, the only complete underground tin mine in Cornwall, is at Penzance for delvers into Cornish history, with the China Clay Country Park along the coast at St Austell.

A wonderful quiet site!! morganv6 (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: We loved everything about Franchis Holidays site! The toilets and showers were clean, and kept clean throughout the day. The site was well looked after and offered everything we needed for a superb holiday. The owners were friendly and helpful. The site is near everything you would want to visit on the Lizard, and we enjoy our stay very much! Disliked: There was nothing we disliked, apart from the weather, but even then, the site remained well maintained and facilities really clean, so the owners did everything they could despite the pouring rain. We have not been deterred and are returning in May 2013 for another holiday with Franchis! |
