Albion Farm Yurt Overview
We have introduced our environmentally friendly yurt (Mongolian for ‘vaulted tent') for holidays in Cornwall on our smallholding near Mylor as an alternative to the traditional holiday cottage. We selected a yurt rather than a tepee for the convenience of having a wood burning stove to keep it cosy.
This lone yurt is situated in a secluded corner at the top of a southwest-facing field, surrounded by trees and mown to give a large grassy area next to the yurt. The field, where we used to graze our pigs and cows, is fallow and set aside and full of wildlife and birdsong - enjoying great afternoon sun. There is a cottage surrounded by trees at the bottom end of the field but it is not overlooked by other houses. Our home and cottage is across Bells Hill, the road to Mylor, at the bottom end of the field.
The yurt is fully equipped for that 'back to nature' experience, with all the home comforts. Look up at the night sky through the roof light, peel back the sides to allow the air in, or snuggle up around the wood burning stove or campfire.
Although one yurt can look very much like another there are significant differences in design. This yurt is based on a traditional central Asian design, with a steamed wheel and steam bent roof poles which give the yurt its unique domed interior and steep, rounded profile. The yurt is hand made in Cornwall on Bodmin moor by a craftsman from locally sourced ash coppice and oak in same way as the traditional Mongolian yurt. The wooden poles are fastened with leather thongs and studs to form a fence-like structure (which are called 'Hana' in Mongolian). The frame of the yurt is covered with thick canvas or felt fastened from outside the yurt.

Nearby attractions and activities
Mylor village is 10 minutes walk away and has almost everything from the 'Lemon Arms' Pub, butcher, village stores, post office, fish shop and newsagent. The yacht harbour and waterside pub and café are close at hand, with its passenger ferry links for Falmouth and St Mawes. The waterside pub, the Pandora Inn, is 15 minutes' walk away but won’t be open again until 2012 due to a thatch fire. The North Coast surf beaches are about 20 minutes drive.
Mylor lies within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is perfectly situated for exploring Cornwall, sailing, garden trips, creek walks and beaches.
Sailing, Maritime and Beaches
Mylor Yacht Harbour and Restronguet Sailing Club have been extensively upgraded and offer cafes, shops and all boating facilities, including boat hire and sailing school. We are close to the National Maritime Museum and Royal Cornwall Yacht Club at Falmouth. We are well placed to explore the surf beaches of the north coast and the quiet south coast beaches and creeks.
Gardens and Walking Holidays
The stunning Eden Project and many wonderful private and National Trust gardens, including Glendurgan, Trebah, Trelissick, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Lamorran are close at hand.
Footpaths from the cottage are plentiful and the 13th Century Pandora Inn can be reached via a 30-minute walk on a scenic creekside path from Little Albion. Add the beauty of the Cornwall Coastal Path, the wilderness of the moors and picturesque villages; it is a wonderful place for a holiday.
Arts, Museums and Culture
Cornwall has a rich cultural heritage. We are 40 minutes from the Tate Gallery at St Ives and close to other art galleries and museums. There are year-round theatre, music and arts events, at venues as diverse as the stunning waterside Minack Theatre, churches and Hall for Cornwall.

From London we find the M4 and M5 to be the fastest route. Come off the M5 at J31 at Exeter and take the A30 via Okehampton, Bodmin, and then take the road to Truro. Bypass Truro and from Truro follow the A39 towards Falmouth.
At Perran-ar-worthal, turn left (signed to Carclew). The turning is almost opposite the Norway Inn seen on your right. Take a left turn at the first T junction, and turn left again at the next crossroads approx 200m further on.
After approximately one mile continue straight ahead past a fork off to the left, towards Mylor Bridge for approximately 200m (now Bells Hill). We are the first visible property on the right hand side. You will see the pink cottage 'Little Albion' and then Albion House, a slate hung house with narrow vehicle entrance and round lawn.
