General

  • Hidden in Cornish countryside but only 3.5 miles from Widemouth Bay
  • Campfires and barbecues encouraged
  • Logs, kindling and pottery available to buy

Hidden away in the Cornish countryside but only three and a half miles from Widemouth Bay, Bakesdown Farm is a peaceful place for old-school stays. No noisy bars, evening entertainment or internet café here, just the roar of your campfire or sizzle of the barbie right by your farm home, and heaps of space for all guests to have maximum room and privacy.

The toilet, shower and wash basin are sited in the farmyard about 20 metres away, and a drinking water tap is in the camping field. Logs, kindling and postcards are available to buy at all times, with an honesty box for payment. Hand-thrown (and handsome) pottery is also made on the farm: guests are welcome to go and have a browse for souvenirs.

Fridges are provided in the farmyard area for the use of all guests.

Quiet seclusion in beautiful surroundings 10/09/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Liam W. Confirmed

  • Great Orchard 2 bedroom cabin
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

The Great Orchard Cabin is set in beautiful surroundings amongst real peace and quiet. It is a very comfortable accommodation with a generous amount of living space compared to similar types of cabins. It also comes with a wood burning stove, which we didn't need this time of year, but would certainly come in handy during the winter months.

The separate kitchen, just a few yards away, is a brilliant idea and it is really well equipped so I had no trouble cooking up breakfast on the gas hob. We also used the outdoor fire pit for doing a barbecue one evening and this is really well setup.

There is also a separate shower room and toilet just a few yards away, so everything one would ever need is within reach, which gives a real sense of privacy and seclusion.

    Disliked:

Can't really complain, but the frying pan could do with replacing with a non-stick newer model. A good sharp chopping knife and a knife sharpener would also make good additions. But otherwise, it is a really well-stocked kitchen.

Anyone complaining about lack of electricity or WiFi is totally missing the point about why someone would come to a place like this :-)

Excellent site - clean pitches, no crowding and just beautiful! 16/09/2018

Absolutely fantastic camp site! The pitches are well spaced, with only 4 pitches so you know the site won't become overcrowded. We loved the communal areas - our daughter loved the caravan with hot chocolates and plenty of colouring sheets. The shower and toilet facilities were clean and never too busy.
There is a lovely little pottery shed with gorgeous items for sale.
The site is ideal for site seeing around Cornwall - close to major roads and so easy to get around.
One of the highlights for us was the swallows and the bats - amazing to watch their acrobatics.
We loved the site so much we're returning next summer. Highly recommend to all!

Very quiet and peaceful very clean facilities I watched a stunning sunset from the door of the tent . Wild and free it’s quite lovely and we had no issues with anything. For the more adventurous at heart it’s perfect ...

    Disliked:

Having to walk up the ( all be it tiny back ) road to get to the toilet. Little one had to jump into the hedge and into stinging nettles to avoid a car going too fast . It’s rite on a sharp bend so drivers and pedestrians have no idea what’s coming . And it’s a very long way to the sea .

Exclusive camping pitch is well worth the extra price! 23/08/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Lisa G. Confirmed

  • Exclusive non-electric mixed tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

The exclusive pitch was fantastic, great privacy and plenty of room for kids to run around and build dens, separate areas for pitching tent and for fire pit which kept smoky smell out of bedding
The shower and compost toilet were clean, and the shower was powerful with plenty of hot water
Own washing up sink and tap next to cooking area is a real advantage!
Caravan with books, toys and stuff for kids a few hundred metres down the road, and honesty shop selling logs, kindling, ice cream, etc. very handy

Wonderful secluded little set up...we stayed in the Yurt field which felt like our own private campsite...

Great kitchen hut, shower and toilet all for our own use.

Very dry wood available for the fire-pit.

Great booking advice from Anna helped us make the best of our time here.

    A real hidden gem!

    Disliked:

Could have done with a second barrow for transporting our kit from the car to the yurt, but other than that perfect!

Lovely site with clean facilities, large pitches, and very peaceful. 12/08/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Laura M. Mobile phone icon Confirmed

  • Non-electric grass tent pitch

  • Liked:

    Good pitch size
Very clean toilet and shower facilities, not far from the pitch.
Charging point in the bathroom for phones etc with USB sockets.
Away from the business of Bude and a very calm and quiet location.

    Disliked:

There is no hot water for washing up near the pitch, but wasn’t a problem as we just boiled a kettle.
You can’t bring your car to the pitch but there is a wheel barrow to help with luggage. Only a small problem as we needed it to blow up the air bed. The area for parking also has some large logs to stop you driving on the grass, but they are below your field of vision when reversing and made it difficult to manoeuvre out.

Directions

From Bude or A39:
Turn right onto the A39 (towards Wadebridge). Take the first left off the A39, signed Marhamchurch. Follow this road into the village of Marhamchurch until you reach the T-junction. Turn left, and follow this road out of the village and on for about 2 miles. On the brow of a hill is a left turn for 'Titson'. Take this left and follow road for another 1/2 mile. In the hamlet of Titson take the right turn immediately before the converted chapel . Follow this lane for 1/2 mile. You climb a hill, take a sharp righthand bend, and there is Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard on your left, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

From Launceston or A30:
Take the Pennygillam exit off the A30 into Launceston. At the end of the slip road turn left and follow this road through Launceston. At the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, go straight on (2nd exit) up a very steep road past the school. Follow this road (B3254) through St Stephens and on for about 10 miles. You enter the village Whitstone (note your closest shop to thefarm is here, on the right as you drive through the village). As you leave the village, take the left turn signposted 'Whitstone Head', just after the speed limit signs. Follow this lane for 2 miles. The farmyard is on your right, with a long cream-coloured stable building alongside, signed Lower Bakesdown Farm. Drive into the yard, and the farm signs will direct you to your holiday space.

Local attractions

Just 3.5 miles away guests will find beaches, the coastal path, surf hire and surf lessons.

The walks, cafés and bike hire aplenty of Bude Canal is 4.5 miles from the site. You can also access the pretty canal walks at Marhamchurch which is even closer to the campsite (just two miles away).

The popular seaside town of Bude is five miles away while Launceston town is a little further afield but still well worth a visit at only nine miles away.
