Escape life with a break to Bodmin... At this friendly site, tucked into a tree-filled valley near Bodmin Moor, the emphasis is on making the most of the ravishing natural surroundings - think birds and bunnies rather than bingo nights, and babbling brooks instead of the boom of a disco bar.
The site is carefully laid out to offer visitors maximum space and seclusion, with a choice of lodging options: wooden ‘wigwams’, which sleep five and come with beds, a kettle, fridge and microwave; camping pods in the bluebell copse; and our roomy pitches, perfect for tents, motorhomes and tourers.
If you're bringing the kids, they'll love roaming around the woods building dens and wildlife spotting, chatting to the resident chickens and pigs, and bouncing around the leafy playground area.
Ruthern Valley Holidays also has a licensed shop selling delicious bangers, other local goodies and some essential camping gear; other amenities include solar-heated showers, toilets, laundry and washing-up facilities.
Nearby attractions and activities
Cornwall’s countless charms are all within your grasp: moors and tors; fantastic beaches (both the northern and southern coasts are within ten miles, and the surfing mecca of Newquay is just a few miles further); the rarefied atmosphere of the uniquely Utopian Eden Project; the romantic lost gardens of Heligan; classical castles and mansions (Tintagel and Llanhydrock House are popular choices); zoos and wildlife centres; theme parks; museums and more.
If you want to ride the waves, book your place at the Surf’s Up school on Polzeath Beach, they will help you find your feet; alternatively, you can surf the forest canopy at the adrenaline-busting Tree Surfers complex near Tavistock.
Sea kayaking, kite surfing and horse-riding are also available.
Cycling deserves a special mention: five minutes on two wheels brings you to the Camel Trail, 16 miles of converted railway track that makes for an idyllic ride through the Camel Valley, and links to the Cornish Way for trips further into Cornwall. Bikes can be hired at numerous cycle centres nearby, including Wadebridge, Bodmin and Padstow.
Slake your pedal-induced thirst en route with a wine-tasting at the renowned Camel Valley Vineyard, or take a bottle away to wash down some fish and chips from the Rick Stein takeaway in Padstow. This picturesque fishing village is only a short ride from Ruthern Valley Holidays and is a fully-fledged foodie destination, with several acclaimed restaurants and takeaways, and plenty of lovely little boutiques.

Stayed in one of the site's camping pods. Cold the first night but a blanket under the air bed meant we were toasty the second. Lovely, fantastically maintained site in a beautiful setting. We were planning to return before we left. Karen H. (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: 18 month old loved the animals and children's play area. Disliked: Not a dislike but there are rumours of other sites with similar pods that have heaters in them... |
