“It’s not proper camping unless there’s a campfire”, as Prometheus said when he nicked Zeus’s fire for a singalong with some tent-dwelling ancient Greeks. The flame-loving trickster would have approved of this Etherley Farm, where campers are free to get their embers blazing without reprimand (poor old Prometheus suffered a rather harsh punishment for his fireiness).

Caravans, campervans and tents are all welcome, with a free choice of location within the roomy field. The site has basic facilities including water, individual showers and a toilet block, but no electric hook-ups.

Although the poultry farm at Etherley is not open to visitors, guests can bag some of its mouthwatering produce for their barbie: chicken, burgers and sausages are all on sale (just drop the owners a line stating what you’d like when you book). Campers can also purchase wood for their fire on site.

Please note that Etherley Farm does not take dogs.

Nearby attractions and activities

There are some lovely foodie pubs very close to the site, and the area is great for walking: the sweeping views of the North Downs from Box Hill, six miles from the site, are not to be missed.

Guests who want to keep things local can visit the nearby National Trust property of Polesden Lacey, or take a tour of the country’s biggest vineyard. Those prepared to venture a little further will find a vast number of attractions and activities across Surrey and in London (a 50 minute train journey from Dorking).

Liked: Easily accessible site. The toilet blocks are in good order with lighting. Dry wood and kindling were available for purchase at a reasonable price. The use of wood chips to soak up some the moisture and to make the area less muddy was an excellent idea

Disliked: The site though very spacious is not particularly level and drainage is a bit of a problem with all the wet weather.

Liked: This is a basic inexpensive campsite on a working farm. The owner was friendly and very helpful. There is a small shop that sells farm produce, mainly poultry. Open fires are allowed, and the shop sells big bundles of seasoned firewood, including kindling, fire starter and matches, at a reasonable price. There were no clear tent pitches as I arrived at the end of a very wet season and the grass had not been cut ...

Disliked: The toilet and washing facilities were pretty basic and limited to two showers and a small toilet block. The water in the shower was barely tepid at the time I used it, nor was there any hot water in the sinks in the toilet block. The hand towel in the toilet was rather grubby.
I enjoyed having a fire, but a few logs to sit on would've been good

Liked: The real countryside feel to the site - and to be able to free-range tent pitch. It was good that we were able to have 'proper' campfires too.

Great BBQ selection of produce to buy on site. Loved the duck burgers!

Disliked: Seeing big burnt patches where other campers had lit campfires without having turfed the grass first.

The toilet and shower facilities were rather quirky - but clean. Not good for shaving in warm/hot water though and the shower power and heat was erratic sometimes.

Liked: Being able to pitch our tent anywhere we liked and next to other friends who were also staying.
Allowed to light real campfires.
Very close to several different pubs only a couple of mins drive away.

Disliked: Showers were very hot, too hot to stand under when they were working, they cut out completely if anyone was using the other 2 showers.
Only one ladies toilet, others are available but not if people are using the showers.
The towels hanging in toilets for you to dry your hands on after washing - I dont think it was very hygienic to be using a towel that lots of other people had been using all ...

So sorry that you did not enjoy your stay.
I have explained about the showers & the grass below & hopefully these issues will be resolved for next year- especially if the weather is better!
We find that paper towels get strewn all over the floors (which would instigate complaints about them being untidy!!)& the dispensers even get taken off the walls so we use regularly clean towels - alot of people bring their own towels for drying off.
But thank you for your input- we may consider changing.

Disliked: The fact the grass was not cut on camping field so we got soaking wet feet and trousers. The showers cut each other out as water force was not strong enough. noisy animals in a nearby barn, very smelly ditch right outside discusting portaloos that kept filling up with very smelly water .

Topping the campsite grass is a problem when the site is wet and busy, as the tractor can churn up the field. Also we can also get complaints about loose grass everywhere.
The shower pressure is due to usage of campers & animals & we are a working farm!
The ditch we can only apologise for - we have had alot of rain this year & the soak-away has found it extremely hard to cope under these conditions- at least we were not flooded out completely like some other campsites- & that would have been worse.!

It is difficult to get hot water supply to the sink - what some people tend to do is to boil a kettle on the campfire to rinse off after washing at the sink.

Two big fields to choose from, I liked the fact that you could freely choose anywhere, the pitches are not allocated so you can go where you want. The kids had a great time! It´s so dark the sky was incredible.

It really shows how much light is projected by street lights when you come out here- its properly dark!!
The wood is fairly priced we feel - we have to get the wood, run it through a saw bench & then axe it to reasonable sizes for you to use & the added firelighters & kindling is a good starter!!
But worth commenting on!!

Liked: The site did exactly what it said on the tin, the site owner were fantastic as we got stuck in some mud, the farmer came out and dragged us out and was extremely pleasant and helpful. On the whole it was a good experience.

Disliked: Facilities were clean, but my 15 year old daughter was a bit put off by someone walking in while she was showering as the door didn't lock properly.

Liked: The back to basics feel of the campsite, being able to have an open fire. Also the local pub served excellent food & was reccomended by the owner. Free hot water in the showers which were huge.

Disliked: The showers did get busy, but we stayed on the site for the Olympic cycling at Box Hill, so site was busy

Thank you-
The washrooms & showers are cleaned frequently - we cannot help it if they get messed up during these times. We are a working farm so we juggle the two.
We have also had a few groups of people who have not respected our facilities & have made them dirty when we have finsihed cleaning them which is totally out of our control.
Thank you for bring it to our attention!

Liked: Choice of two large fields in a lovely away from it all site. You can buy campfire wood to cook your own food, or a short walk through the wood to a very nice pub (but take torch!) Would come here again.

Disliked: Nothing to complain about really!

Liked: Organised camp site with friendly owner. Clean toilets and showers. Close to a good local pub (The Parrot). Camp fires allowed.

Disliked: Lots of geese in the farm buildings, I would advise choosing a pitch away from them.

Basic farm camping, but nice atmosphere

Simon N. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos)   Confirmed ?

Liked: Countryside location, away from towns or busy roads. The lack of hard standings or hook-ups means this is a nice relaxed tent-oriented site with a relaxed atmosphere, no loud music or rowdy groups who seem to have bought their entire house with them. Good value for money. Friendly owners. Facilities cleaned regularly.

Disliked: Toilets and showers were basic, but not unpleasant. Could have been more and the water could have been warmer. Site became rather muddy, but with the weather we've been having that's not something you can really complain about. Parking was very tricky, again presumably due to the mus making the fields unuseable so everyone parked in the lane.

Liked: We could have a proper campfire! The woods backing on to the field were great for the kids to go exploring. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Clean facilities with soap, toilet roll and towels. Very reasonable prices.

Disliked: Not being able to drive the car onto the field as it was too muddy, a circumstance beyond anyone's control!

Liked: The simplicity of the site meant it was a authentic camping experience. It had the facilities to cater for the first-timers amongst the group.
Friendly and helpful staff. Great value for money.

Disliked: Not much not to like here. I spite of the weather, the site held up well - so don't let the rain put you off!

Liked: I really enjoyed my weekend away at etherly farm , and not only would i stay here again but i would recommend this place to others who just want to enjoy the camping experience .
I came here with my friend and although it was located quite some way from pubs and shops (we did not have a car ) , it did not seem to matter as there were plenty of fields and nature trails to walk around ...

Disliked: My only comment would be that maybe another female toilet should be concidered as when the changeing rooms were in use there appeared to be more ladies waiting to use the one toilet where as the mens had more cubicules , apart from that ,there wasnt any issues .
