  • Small, family-run and award-winning glamping near the North Downs
  • Luxury stays five miles from Maidstone and 40 minutes from London
  • Egyptian linen, communal snug and heated bath cabin with fluffy towels
Clever owners Ami and Mark have picked up quite a few awards for their family-run Kent site Kits Coty Glamping – it'll probably take you a matter of a second or two on arrival to figure out why… On the edge of the North Downs five miles from Maidstone, Kits Coty Glamping is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near Kit's Coty House, a megalithic long barrow with spectacular views across the Downs and the Medway valley. It's handily placed between Maidstone and Chatham and within 40 minutes of both London and the Kent coast, for stacks to see and do within easy reach. Or, as you might decide within a second or two of arriving, perhaps you'd prefer to laze about on site instead. All accommodation here is of the luxury and fully-equipped variety, and includes electricity, full-sized beds with Egyptian cotton bed linen, and a woodburning stove or heater indoors as well as picnic tables, firepit and barbecue outside. There's also a covered communal kitchen space for frying up alfresco in all weathers. Although the accommodation is properly swish, Ami and Mark say the star of the show is the luxury bathroom cabin, with two wetrooms, underfloor heating, toiletries, hairdryers and fluffy towels. You'll also want to spend an evening or two in the cosy snug area, which has leather sofas, a dining table and chairs, and books and games; outdoors, there's a communal firepit with seating to while away warmer nights. The village of Aylesford is under 10 minutes' drive away for supplies, or you could firmly decide to do no cooking at all, ta very much, and amble along for a meal at the local pub, just under a mile away.

Local attractions

Local village Aylesford has been occupied since Neolithic times and this region is one of ancient history and monuments: Kit’s Coty House and its neighbour Little Kit’s Coty House are just outside town. More modernly, the kids should like a look at Rochester Castle (15 minutes' drive), the 13th-century fortress once besieged by (bad) King John. Elsewhere around Kent, there's enough to do to keep you occupied for weeks, whether your tastes tend towards more history at Chatham Dockyard or Leeds Castle, both within 20 minutes, or getting active hiking, horse riding or cycling around the countryside and coast. Buckmore Park Kart Circuit and the Chatham Ski & Snowboard Centre are 10 to 15 minutes' drive away. Golf, swimming, geocaching, watersports, gardens and museums galore are all around too: ask Ami and Mark for tips or peruse the tourist info on site for ideas.
