Broadhembury Caravan & Camping Park

From £23 (for 1 night, 2 adults)   Why not enter some details and get an accurate price?

Action-packed family holiday or relaxing adults’ break? Have either at the award-winning Broadhembury Caravan and Camping Park, a campsite of two halves near Ashford with separate areas for families and adults-only campers.

The kids can whirl around the play areas, which are set well back from pitches and the park roads; there’s a separate playground for the under-sevens as well as a roomy sports field and a games room for when the weather’s less than kind. For the sprogless, the couples’ area The Meadows is the most peaceful part of the park: sit back here and watch the somewhat spectacular sunsets over this part of the world, or look out for the local rabbits, hares and badgers. Star-gazing’s a nocturnal option from here too, as lighting is kept to a minimum.

Whether staying in the family section or The Meadows, there are spotless and up to date amenities close to hand all year round, with centrally heated shower and loo blocks, a family bathroom, babies’ room and an en-suite block for wheelchair users or guests with impaired mobility.

Cooking your own food? Broadhembury has a campers’ kitchen for the use of all guests, and a herb garden to sprinkle samples into your dinner; there’s also a shop on site selling essentials and a large Tesco a few minutes’ drive away. All this, and dogs are allowed too.

It’s not for nowt that Kent’s known as the Garden of England: there are over 180 gardens in the county to pick from, to suit all seasons and sorts. Have a cream tea at the Secret Gardens of Sandwich, with free entry from December to February; tour the orchards and sample the wares at Brogdale, home to the National Fruit Collections; or visit former royal haunt Lullingstone Castle to see the famous World Gardens – and Queen Anne’s bath house in the castle grounds.

Kids not impressed with green-fingered sightseeing? The beaches of Kent are within easy driving distance of Broadhembury: take them to the amusement park at the seaside resort of Dymchurch or to scramble around the second largest shingle formation in the world at Dungeness Beach. To see the coast with a nostalgic twist, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway is the world’s smallest public railway and has regular events and train-driving experiences alongside its regular routes. The Kent & East Sussex Railway goes from Tenterden through the Rother Valley to Bodiam: stop off here for a look around the looming medieval moated castle.

Closer to home, anyone who can’t be faffed venturing far will find plenty to do in the area around Broadhembury. The long-distance path the Greensand Way passes through the nearby village of Kingsnorth for walking and cycling: follow it to the next stop at Hamstreet or double back along part of its 108-mile length towards Haslemere in Surrey. The old market town of Ashford has a designer outlet for retail therapy and a weekly street market, with leisure centres, swimming pools, a museum and the Rare Breeds Centre for rainy days. There are several golf clubs in the area too, with the closest at Kingsnorth.

For day trips, Canterbury is a half hour's drive away, with gawping at the historic cathedral for grown-ups and meeting the inhabitants at Wingham Wildlife Park for kids; history buffs can also take a trip to Leeds and Dover Castles, and cruise along to Chartwell, the former home of Winston Churchill. Or hop on a train to the museums, galleries and sights of London: the high-speed train reaches the capital from here in less than forty minutes.
