  • Relaxed and friendly rural site five minutes' drive from Rye
  • A 15-minute drive from the beach at Camber Sands
  • Pub five minutes' walk away and bus to Rye just outside the site
Coast, country, castles, campfires – the cracking combo that’s likely to send you haring off (with hounds if you’ve got some that need a holiday) to Hare and Hounds Campsite, a relaxed and friendly place in the highly scenic surrounds of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. What a fab location this is… there’s plenty of space around the two and a half acres to relax or run about (depending on your preference), and it’s a mere five minutes’ trot from a country pub that’ll welcome you all in (kids and dogs included) for a meal or a couple of pints (this last not for the kids and dogs…). More pubs, restaurants and shops are five minutes’ drive away in Rye; save yourself the hassle of parking by boarding the bus directly outside the site. Filling many a day is an easy task around these parts: Camber Sands is 15 minutes' drive away for beach antics, and you can swot up on all kinds of history with trips to Bodiam Castle, Rye Castle and Hastings, all within half an hour. This is a place that thrives on plenty of peaceful slumbers, so if you’ve got party times in mind you’ll need to look elsewhere. Cosy evenings round barbecues are enthusiastically embraced, however. The friendly folks on site will loan you a firepit stacked with all the necessary accoutrements for a small extra charge - they don't permit guests to bring their own firepits. The refurbished amenities include six spankingly clean toilets and four similarly spick-and-span showers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: This campsite is absolutely charming, small with minimal facilities but everything was working, clean and easy to use. The staff were friendly and the location was great for exploring Rye and Camber. We are looking forward to visiting again next year.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great location, can walk to rye in about an hour, followed the map provided by the site, beautiful walk through the countryside. Bus stop just outside the side, bus timetable displayed on notice board on site. We travelled back from rye on the bus. Pub about 5 minutes up the road, serves lovely food. We had the Sunday roast which was delicious. Very peaceful site. We didn't need to use the facilities as we have our own, but looked clean. We will definitely be returning

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: This was a fantastic site, it is like they have thought about the worst parts of camping and make sure they have them right. Toilets are clean and tidy, washing up areas always tidy with sprays, washing up liquid, squeegee to clear excess water. A freezer and microwave for all to use aswell as lock box for mobile phone charge free of use. This is a really well thought out campsite, with home made maps for local walks to Rye through fields, directions to the local pubs and surrounding areas. Highly recommend for the price

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Welcoming and friendly owners. Given comprehensive written information on arrival of facilities. Everything you need clean showers and toilets, washing up area, microwave, freezer. Quite small and that suits us, great location and we booked EHU. Not extra for electric and dogs just £2!

Disliked: Some road noise, can’t be helped as great location for exploring.

Bell tent

Liked: The bell tent was equipped with everything you needed for the stay. The campsite itself was in an ideal location, very easy to find and had very clear instructions on and around the site. Plenty of showers and toilets. Would highly recommend!

Disliked: The close proximity of the pitches and that there were only two power sockets for charging phones etc. No surprise they always seemed to be in use.

Local attractions

Love long walks or bike rides? Site staff will happily point you towards plenty of places to get those legs going – top picks include the family trails and dedicated mountain bike trails at Bedgebury Forest (half an hour’s drive), gentle strolls around seafront Romney Marsh (25 minutes) and trips to Bewl Water (35 minutes) for walking, cycling, fishing and rowing on the lake. Want more watersports? Spectacular Camber Sands beach (15 minutes’ drive) is a popular place to have a crack at kitesurfing, while the calmer waters around Rye are more suited to windsurfing and paddleboarding. If you’d rather stay dry, Rye’s a fab place for a laidback day bimbling around the castle, museums and antique shops. Other landlubbing days out include the moated medieval Bodiam Castle (20 minutes’ drive), rides on the Northiam Steam Railway (10 minutes) and meeting all sorts of farm animals, birds of prey and butterflies at the Rare Breeds Centre (20 minutes), where you’re highly encouraged to time your visit to coincide with pig racing time.
