The Bull’s Head…that doesn’t sound like a campsite, does it? In fact, it sounds more like a…pub. But, happily for those who like to combine their beers with their breaks using the least effort possible, the Bull’s Head is both. Based in East Sussex at Herstmonceux (try saying that after a couple of pints), this site is both more secluded and quiet than you’d expect for being next to an imbibing emporium, and is listed as family-friendly. Which we think rocks, rather.
Facilities at the site include a new toilet block, water standpipe and chemical disposal point, and there’s no problem with cooking under the stars either as campfires are allowed in the camping field. For guests who’d rather get someone else to dish up dinner, plenty of pub grub options using mostly local produce can be had in the bar. You can even try and win a bottle of wine at the long-standing pub quiz on Monday nights. Now there’s a reason to extend your weekend trip…
Nearby attractions and activities
With something called the 1066 route running past the campsite, it’s not a huge stretch to guess that this is battlefield country. The 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield site is nearby to relive that all-important day in English history when King Harold got something in his eye, while there are other battle-y relics in neighbouring Hastings which also has Europe's biggest beachside fishing fleet and smuggling adventures at St Clements Caves. The 1066 route is just one of the many scenic walks in the surrounding countryside, or for day trips, Herstmonceux is recommended with its castle and the rurally-set Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre.
As well as walking, Sussex sightseers can hop onto the Kent and East Sussex Railway to puff along from Tenterden through the countryside of the Rother Valley to Bodiam with its National Trust castle, or stay closer to home with a trip on (or down) Hastings’s Cliff Railway which has the UK's steepest funicular railway. Hang on tight…
For less adrenalin-fuelled sightseeing, options include a stroll along the nearby beaches - the seaside is just a short drive away - or a dander around Darwell Reservoir, surrounded by ancient woodland and the chance to spot woodpeckers and tawny owls.
Meanwhile, mini-battlers will be more than happy with the abundance of attractions in the area aimed at the little people, from the Blue Reef Aquarium at Hastings to getting bug-eyed at the birds of prey at Hailsham’s Knockhatch Adventure Park.

Liked: This was a good, basic, cheap campsite. It was close to the castles of Herstmonceaux and Pevensey, the beauty of Beachy Head and Eastbourne and the quiet beauty of the local countryside. This campsite allows dogs and campfires - an absolute must for me. The food at the pub was excellent too, particularly the pigeon! Excellent quality beers too. Disliked: The lack of a shower block in the field was an issue. The toilets were excellent and clean though. |

Liked: The nice friendly staff at the pub. The fact we could light a little fire or disposable bbq. The odd yet amusing pigs in a little field nearby (no smells though!) The loos were lovely too. Disliked: A shower facility would be smashing |
