Owlsbury Park
FavouriteNo sightings of Hedwig or her owlish chums yet, but visitors regularly spot badgers, pheasants, foxes and deer (even the occasional white hart) at the wildlife-packed Owlsbury Park.
Despite its serene, pastoral surroundings, this Camping and Caravanning Club members’ site is very handy for shops, pubs and eateries, all about a mile away. Non members can either join when they arrive (at a special rate) or use the neighbouring site which opens when ground conditions permit.
Owlsbury Park is good for fishing (£5 per day, £3 per evening), and guests can hire out the necessary kit on site: the park’s attractive coarse fishing ponds are stocked with carp, roach, tench and perch, or there’s the Crowborough Angling Club lake next door. Anglers must have a rod licence unless they are hiring tackle/beginners and therefore supervised. Cycle hire is also on offer onsite with a pick up/drop off facility.
There are grass and hardstanding pitches, and the essential facilities include toilets, shower and wash-up facilities, solar-powered lights, solar electric hook-ups, water and chemical waste points. There’s no electricity on site, although visitors can rent an inexpensive (and quiet) portable generator if needed.
Please note that you will need to book in advance, as the entrance and amenities are secured with coded padlocks.
Nearby attractions and activities
For those who fancy ditching the car for a bit, the site is close to public transport links: trains and buses from Crowborough (a mile and a half away) go to Tunbridge Wells, London, Lewes and Brighton.
Crowborough village has plenty of amenities, including an indoor swimming pool and gym, and a miniature railway. The area is great for golfers, with a number of courses nearby.
The charming spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells (to give it its full title) is eight miles from Owlsbury, and well worth a visit for a stroll round the specialist shops in the Georgian Pantiles, a taste of the water from the Chalybeate Spring, or a trip on the steam railway. The town also has plenty of food and entertainment options, including a multiplex cinema.
Other potential day trips include a jaunt to the coast at Eastbourne or Brighton; to Lewes, home to a castle, gardens and the biggest Bonfire Night celebrations in the country; the National Trust gardens at Sheffield Park and Wakehurst Place; the William Morris interiors at Standen; Ashdown Forest, home of Winnie the Pooh; or a steam through the Sussex countryside on the historic Bluebell Railway.

Very natural and beautiful site with great views. Andrew S. (Mature couple, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: The location is superb. Every pitch has a view across the wooded valley. Lots of wildlife to watch. Owner very friendly and hospitable. Disliked: Nothing really, the hills in the locality certainly increased our fitness on nearby cycle rides! |
