The Quiet Site

8.9 Favourite
From £16 (for 1 night, 2 adults)   Why not enter some details and get an accurate price?

Pod, tent and van dwellers alike will be lulled by the lovely views of Ullswater at the Quiet Site, which huddles in splendid seclusion in the fells above the lake.

You’ll find a tiptop selection of facilities here, including family-sized bathrooms, an on-site shop and a large children’s playground, but the thing that really sets the Quiet Site apart is its pub.

Dictionary dude Samuel Johnson was surely thinking of the Quiet Bar when he stated, “There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn.”

Not only is it a magnificent seventeenth century barn with an absurdly well-provisioned cellar, but it has its own games room (table football, pool, air hockey, table tennis), television room, and - for the ultimate in parental pleasure - an upstairs playhouse and softplay centre for the kids.

Nearby attractions and activities

This being the Lake District, there are oodles of things to do nearby: fantastic walks and bike rides; pony-trekking; steam trains to steam boats, paddling and rowing and pretty much everything water-based in between. Landlubbers of a historical bent will find no shortage of castles, Roman forts and stately homes to tempt them.

The locals laugh in the face of drizzly days (well, they see quite a few) and have set up a vast array of coping mechanisms: visit one of the multifarious museums in the area, which feature everything from James Bond to pencils, or perhaps an aquarium, ice-age caverns filled with stalactites, or even a slate mine.

Liked: The site was very quiet and peaceful as it was up in the hill away from the main road. The pods were perfect size, secure, cosy and i loved the decking bit at the front to sit and have a drink or eat your tea if your cooking on site. They were perfect for a weekend break as a young couple and very comfy as they could house a double air bed with no trouble ...

Disliked: The heating was only limited to an hour at a time and then you had to reboot it so throughout the night especially in October it got quite cold. Make sure you take layers!! You might feel that with the site being a 10 minute drive away from the nearest pub to eat is a problem but we didnt find it too much of an issue.

Exceeded expectations- a very civilised stay

Liked: Well stocked and (shock) very reasonably priced shop, great bar with kids soft play area. Pods very well kept and warm enough for a wet September weekend with a 4 month old baby. Even had light, heat and power, which we weren't expecting!
Also recommend the specially brewed 'Quiet Pint' In front of the huge log fire!

Disliked: A well manicured site, so if your taste is for slightly wilder and more 'au nature' camping (us before 2 kids!) then this won't be for you. Predominantly caravans at this chillier time of year which I think makes for a less lively atmosphere but haven't been in summer when things might be different.

Liked: Bathrooms
Pitch
Bar - great play room for children
Owners
Pods - kids loved staying in them I will never go back to a tent

Disliked: Shame the bar does not do food
I think it would be a good idea to have a gate at the top of the stairs in the bar, to stop children running out of the play room and near them.

Liked: Huge sized pitch, good welcome, excellent toilet/shower area, cosy bar & views.

Disliked: Pitch was made up of pea shingle which has weakened our ground sheet. Kids play area is down the hill, out of sight of the main camping field.

Both these things are due to the slope of the site, so completely understandable; just not ideal.

Liked: The showers are clean and well-kept all in the same build as the laundry facilities and washing up area. The pitches are individually marked and are a very generous size. The bar is a great retreat at night for a ‘Quiet’ pint. There is a great children’s play area although this does become rather wet and sodden.

Disliked: The tent pitches have all been levelled which is great but in doing so the ground is incredibly hard and full of stones, I must have bent over 15 pegs putting our tent up. A mallet is a must as is some seriously strong tent pegs and plenty of them!

Liked: I would recommend this site to everyone, young, old, families, couples, groups, absolutely brilliant. We had excellent weather forecast so went a day early, which was no hassle and ended up staying an extra day at the end, which was also no hassle. I can imagine peak season this site is very popular so booking early is a must and will definately be getting my dates in very soon. This site has tries to cover ...

Disliked: I couldnt think of anything I disliked about the site, the people or the facilities.

We stayed in the camping pods at The Quiet Site and couldn't of asked for more.

Kate A. (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos)   Confirmed ?

  • Stayed Oct 2011 Review submitted

Liked: Lovely staff on site were very helpful and friendly. The facilities we miles ahead of other camping pod sites that we had stayed in previously. The atmosphere of the on site pub is brilliant, we also went to the pub down the road and ended it going back to the campsite site as there was no comparison.

Disliked: I can honestly say there was nothing we 'disliked', unless you could the weather but let's face it that can't be helped. If you were a couple wanting to get away from kids, the only thing I would say is maybe this isn't the place, as there was a lot of families on the site but I'd hardly say this was a negative.

Liked: outdoor play area for children.

Didn't feel overcrowded

Disliked: Beer in bar a bit overpriced.
Parents who didn't bother to supervise their children in the soft play area.
No food in bar.
had to wait for people on our pitch to leave before we could put tent up - not ideal when with small kids.

Liked: Pub with soft play - 6 and 3 year old loved it.
Friendly staff, very helpful when we pitched up. Good sized hard standing p staff lent us an extension cable for the hook up without any hassle.
Great walking nearby and plenty to do within half an hours drive, even in typical Lakes weather

Disliked: Soggy play park - kids were covered in mud within an hour, not so good for biking, especially with kids
Biggest issue was the drive in - very tight single track road from Brackenrigg Hotel, easier from Watermillock

Liked: The site was clean the bathrooms were to a very high standard, there was even baths if you wanted one. The pods were so cute and had a heater and lamp inside them. Plus you can park more or less right next to them so you don’t have your carry your stuff so far. The site had beautiful scenery all around. I would recommend the waterfall walk, 8 miles long, very tough but it ...

Disliked: I disliked nothing, maybe the rain when you need the loo in the middle of the night but you need a lot of rain to keep those lakes full.
