Smart campers: avoid the hordes crawling to the south-west coast and breeze your way to a little gem on the edge of the Northumberland National Park instead. Riverside Country Park is a friendly, well-maintained site cradling the banks of Wooler Water, with plenty to appeal to the whole family: pottering around the delightful river banks and the 80-acre woods, soaking in the indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi, baiting of rods for a bit of fly-fishing, or a few rounds of pool in the games room.

Riverside Country Park has good essential amenities, including a lounge bar and restaurant with free wifi, Sky Sports and weekend entertainment, a shop, launderette, and children’s play area (and extra activities and entertainment for the littlies laid on during the peak season). There are camping pods as well as pitches for tents and tourers, and the site is open year round.

Nearby attractions and activities

Trip-trap over the bridge from Riverside Country Park to Wooler, a pretty medieval market town with some alluring eateries, pubs and shops, and the ideal starting point for walks into the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park. Cycling, fishing, golfing and horse riding fans will also find rich pickings nearby.

If you haven’t explored the Northumberland coastline before, you’re in for a treat. Expect atmospheric ancient edifices in breathtaking surroundings, such as Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne; charming seaside villages like Seahouses, where you can jump aboard a sea-safari boat to the Farne Islands; and miles and miles of nature reserves and unspoiled sandy beaches.

You can follow Hadrian’s Wall westbound from its start point in Wallsend, stopping off at Roman forts in breathtaking settings as you head in the direction of Carlisle; travel along tranquil country roads to explore the Scottish borders; or south to visit Alnick Castle and the Alnick Garden, stunning contemporary gardens with one of the world’s biggest treehouses.

For city lights, hit the A1 for an easy ride to Newcastle and Gateshead, which are buzzing with culture (try the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art or a gig at the spectacular Sage Concert Hall), museums, football, restaurants, nightlife and shops; or head further north for a day trip to “Auld Reekie” to explore the many-splendoured delights of Edinburgh.

Liked: The camping pods were great and saved the hassle of putting up a tent. The double plug inside the pod was very handy. Shower block and toilets were very clean and easily accessible from the pod. The location of the site was lovely, with a short walk into wooler town centre.

Disliked: Nothing really. The only small criticism was that our pod didn't have a picnic table whereas the others did.

A lovely site in a convenient location; probably better suited to young families as the river was a good 'safe' attraction.

Liked: The space of the pitches.
The quiet location.
Sound of the river in the background.
The fact that the 'entertainment' was across the road, so had no impact on me.
the cleanliness of the facilities.
The friendliness of all the staff.

Disliked: I thought that there could have been more showers or private cubicles to have a wash.( Having said that we never had to wait for a shower).
Children from other parts of the site playing football in the dark right outside my tent.

Liked: I needed a location for a photoshoot at the Farne Islands and also reasonable in price. I liked the look of Riverside because it was fairly close to where I wanted to go and also I was intrigued by the camping pods. Having a roof over your head but still needing camping gear was quite fun and a little more comfy. The site was fairly busy but noise wasn't a problem. The showers were ...

Liked: Good clean facilities, ie showers and toilets
Convenient shop
Easy to find
Friendly staff
Good leisure facilities, ie bar, pool tables and swimming pool only a five minute walk away
Ground was well drained, when we arrived it was dry and when it rained heavily ground did not get boggy
Very good price!

Disliked: Site being so close to the main (6omph) road, our pitch was 150 yards from the road, though there are other pitches further away.
