The Hideaway is a small, relaxed and friendly campsite in the heart of North Yorkshire offering chilled-out camping and glamping that's in tune with nature and doesn't cost the earth.

There are just 40 pitches in a six-acre field, which nestles in our 110-acre farm, surrounded by trees and bounded on one side by a stream. We are off the beaten track, but only a stroll from the village shop, pub and bus stop.

The shower block is a brand-new log cabin-style building: it is heated and there is plenty of hot water! Preserving the environment and what we have achieved here at Baxby Manor over the years is important to us, which is why when you come to stay at The Hideaway things may be a little different from your 'standard' campsite…

A biomass straw pellet boiler is used to heat the water for your showers, LED lights are used throughout the building and rainwater is used for flushing the toilets. We also have a heat recovery system installed to make sure nothing goes to waste! You wouldn't know any difference though...just read our reviews!

The Hideaway is a special, peaceful and restful place where you can spend precious days away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A haven for walkers and cyclists, and a perfect base for exploring the many historic, cultural and outdoor attractions of this lovely part of Yorkshire. We are about camping, the countryside and getting away from it all, and for those reasons:

We have a strict no noise policy after 11pm so if you want to stay up late partying, this is not the site for you!

Nearby attractions and activities

Ready to explore? There's plenty to do whatever time of the year you visit.

The variety of scenery around us provides endless possibilities for walking, cycling and touring - north to the vast dramatic open landscape of the Moors; west to the green valley pastures of the Dales, beloved of our famous local vet - James Herriot - and Brontë Country; south through the rich farmlands of the Vale of York, to the City, with its glorious Minster, Jorvik Museum and the National Rail Museum; east to the Wolds and coast - picturesque fishing villages, Whitby old town's quaint streets, imposing clifftop Abbey and Dracula legend, plus the traditional seaside resorts of Scarborough and Filey.

Visit historic York and the Spa Town of Harrogate. The city of York and the spa town of Harrogate are both within a 30-minute drive, providing a host of attractions and the opportunity to shop 'til you drop during the day, and dine out or party at night.

There are numerous other places to visit in the region. Yorkshire's rich past bequeathed us castles, abbeys and stately homes in abundance. Castle Howard, Beningborough Hall, Newby Hall, Duncombe Park and the abbeys of Byland, Rievaulx and Fountains and Helmsley Castle are all within 30 minutes of Baxby Manor.

This part of Yorkshire supports many fascinating craft industries, particularly in our immediate area, where almost every village has its own wood carver and furniture maker - the most renowned of which is Robert Thompson - the Mouse Man - at Kilburn.

York attractions
Spend some time in historic York, with its quaint streets and world famous Minster. The Jorvik Viking Museum and Castle Museum will transport you back in time. Walk round the medieval city walls and down the famous Shambles (probably one of England's most famous streets) - take a river trip or visit the National Railway Museum.

And, when you need to refuel, why not visit Betty's famous tearooms, or discover one of the many pubs (reputedly one for every day of the year!), bistros and restaurants hidden in the network of streets.

Shopping
If you need a little retail therapy, York, Leeds and Harrogate have a great selection of individual shops, waiting to be discovered, along popular high street names. Just outside York, you will find shopping centres at Monks Cross and Clifton Moor and an enormous range of discounted designer labels for fashion and the home at the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet. There are colourful and interesting markets in all of the surrounding towns - one for every day of the week!

Evenings out
If you're not ready for a sleepy evening by the fire, there's a great selection of dining out in the area - the Balmoral in Husthwaite; the Fauconberg, Coxwold, White Swan, Ampleforth, Black Swan, Oldstead; Star at Harome. Or head into York, where there is something for every taste and budget - from bistro to rosette dining. Do a ghost walk, visit the theatre or see a film at the stylish riverside City Screen.

Out and about
A spectacular drive through the North York Moors takes you to the dramatic east coastline with beautiful Robin Hood's Bay, nestling between the cliffs, and Whitby, home of the ultimate fish and chips! Why not stop on the way in Heartbeat Country, and visit the NYM Steam Railway (Pickering to Grosmont)? Or go to Scarborough, via Castle Howard, the setting for Brideshead Revisited. A visit to the farm shop and delicatessen there is a must for self-catering or gift buying.

Head west and you are soon in the Yorkshire Dales, with its picture postcard images of drystone walls and dramatic countryside - real Herriot Country - with miles of walks ranging from gentle valley bottom to the strenuous 'Three Yorkshire Peaks' challenge.

Get active
This is the place for walkers and cyclists, and plenty of activities for all ages.

Riding stables are popular locally - there is a trekking centre just a few miles away, and there are several golf courses in the area. There is some great fishing to be had on the local rivers and fish lakes.

You will find go-karting at Monks Cross, and, further afield, a trip to Xscape will brush up your winter sports on the indoor real snow ski slope and ice rink.

For family fun, test your nerve on the large variety of rides at Flamingoland and Lightwater Valley Fun Parks.

Horse racing
At York, Ripon, Wetherby, Thirsk, Beverley and Catterick.

Liked: The site is on a very quiet lane, so traffic noise is non existent.

The site is new, and the facilities block is excellent. It is not a huge site, so the shower/toilets should be able to cope perfectly well when the site is fully booked.

It was not busy when I visited, mid week during term time.

Each pitch has a fire pit so you can have your own bonfire in the evening ...

Disliked: The weather could of been a bit kinder, had several inches of British sunshine, but no flooding problems on site.

Liked: We visited the site on a freezing cold Easter weekend! We liked the friendly welcome and hopefully the caravan teashop will be a regular thing because the served the most amazing cakes, soup and hot drinks, It was great to pitch our tent and to go over for a lovely hot cup of tea and cake!

Liked: The cleanliness of the site
The friendliness of the manager
The option to have a log fire when it was so cold
Plenty of space
The relaxed atmosphere

Disliked: The showers unfortunately are not ideal - the shower heads need to be able to rotate or should be located on the side panel rather than the back panel - if you are not careful the water jets straight into your shoes. You are not left with a dry area to stand once you have showered. It is not a levelling issue, it is a design flaw. Mops are provided but ideally changing the shower heads would ...

We have now levelled the floor and the water drains away rather than collecting where its not wanted! We are looking at some other shower heads though as you are correct regarding that issue, i wish it was as simple as being a design flaw but being a timber building you are somewhat restricted to wher you can locate the services such as water and drainage pipes. Anyway, it is much better now even with the same heads.
Hopefully see you again next year.

Disliked: I am not sure why there was a code on the door for toilet and showers, not very handy if you are carrying a small child and having to open the door with both hands.
It would have been nice to have 1 shower room suitable for young children/babies with changing facilities for babies, maybe something for the future??

Thank you. The baby changing is something we thought we might add later, we just wanted to see if it was needed. The codes are to stop the neighbouring caravan site (with no facilities) using the building! We hope to change them over the winter.

Liked: We stayed in a bell tent.

As other reviews, the site has great new, clean facilities.

Opportunity for real fires is great for the kids and dads alike.

Barny is really friendly and always keen to help out if you have any questions.

Disliked: My only criticism is that the directions on the website are not clear. Having asked asked several people in nearby villages where the campsite was, the raised eyebrows and wry smiles suggested that we were not the first people that day to have asked them. They really need rewriting from the perspective of somebody who doesn't know the area i.e. idiot proof :-). A map would be good.

Thank you for your review. Yes I agree the lane is narrow but we do not want to widen or Tarmac it as this would not be in line with our Eco ethos plus as the name suggests, it just wouldn't be a hideaway if we changed it!

Liked: The site has toilets, showers, washing up facilities and laundry room in a lovely purpose built pine cabin, new for the 2012 season. It's run by a lovely couple Hollie and Barny who make you feel very welcome. Most pitches include a fire pit which seemed to get plenty of use in the evenings.

Disliked: The field is still a bit stoney and lumpy not having been established long, but fine if you check for stones before pitching.

Just wait for a few more people to pitch on the site, flatten the stones in a bit!

Making amendments (changes) to advance bookings

You can make any amendments to your booking directly with the site. Whether it can meet your needs depends on site-specific considerations, such as pitch availability. This applies only to making amendments to an existing booking. Checking in

Pitches are available from 2pm on the day of arrival.

On arrival customers should call at reception to make contact with a member of staff and pay any outstanding pitch fees.

In the event of poor ground conditions a pitch may not be available. The site manager will endeavour to advise the customer in advance should this occur but no responsibility can be accepted if this is not possible.

On arrival, a pitch may be chosen from those remaining of the type you have booked. The staff member will do their best to accommodate preferences; however, management and safety issues also have to be met. Customers are therefore required to abide by the guidance given when pitching.

The customer will be shown to their pitch by a member of staff.

Customers must familiarise themselves with the site’s fire regulations and fire fighting equipment and its location as soon as they arrive on site.

Your pitch

If you pitch outside the boundaries of you pitch or your unit is judged to pose a risk to the safety, privacy and comfort of others, you will be asked to move.

1.The six-metre rule must be observed: units excluding guy ropes must be 6m apart from adjacent units.
2. It is a requirement that the unit (along with any ancillary equipment) fits within the confines of the pitch whilst maintaining the 6m rule. If this cannot be achieved you may be required to purchase an additional pitch (if available) or remove the ancillary equipment.
3. Condition removed
4. All loose equipment needs to be stored within the confines of your unit.
5. It is the responsibility of customers to ensure the mains electrical cable from the hook-up point to their unit and the unit’s installation are safe. All units should be protected by a residual current device (RCD). For tent campers, this should be incorporated into a purpose-made mains supply unit designed for tent camping conditions.
6. In certain circumstances customers may be required to change pitch or take down gazebos or awnings during their stay. If this is required a full explanation will be offered and a member of staff will advise accordingly.
7. The transfer or sub-letting of pitches is not allowed.
8. Prior consent must be obtained by the customer from a member of the site staff if they intend leaving their unit unoccupied over night. A current, contactable mobile phone number should be left with the site staff.
