The Pickering people have it sorted. The Vale of Pickering Caravan Park is AA North East Campsite of the Year 2013, is crammed with trees, shrubs and flowerbeds, has panoramic views over the North Yorkshire countryside, and has washrooms you’d want to find anywhere. The heated loos and showers are immaculate, there are private wash cubicles, an electric point for those all-important hairdryers and hair straighteners, and even a ladies’ make-up area. Best of all, there are ladies’ and gents’ baths – providing a long hot soak after a long hard day relaxing and sightseeing.
There are first-class facilities on site too, including a well-stocked licensed shop, a launderette, caravan spares and gas cylinders, a play area and a football pitch for the kids. There are spacious tent pitches in the camping field, or roll your caravan or motorhome onto one of the roomy hardstanding electric pitches instead – either way there’ll be plenty of room for the kids to have a kickabout.
For food, there are two pubs within strolling distance and the clever people at Pickering also have a visiting fish and chip van once or twice a week. Or you can pick up some fresh local produce at the nearby farmers’ market and sizzle your sausages over the barbie.
Nearby attractions and activities
Trainspotters and sightseers alike will be chuff-chuffed at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to take visitors on a steam-rollering 18 miles through the moors, with rural villages along the route - Goathlands was used as Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter film and as Aidensfield in ITV’s Heartbeat - and with plenty of opportunities to hop off and go hiking o’er the moors. The North York National Park has walking and cycling routes galore, with other sporty options near the Vale of Pickering taking in tennis, golf, horse-riding, sailing, mountain biking, fishing and watersports at Wykeham Lakes, or cantering at Snainton Riding Centre.
Savvy shoppers should sally to the nearby market towns of Pickering and Malton, or head towards York to spend the day at the Monks Cross Shopping Centre two miles from the city centre. And once the wallet is somewhat lighter, other recommended and less expensive days out in the area include taking in the World War II museum at Eden Camp, seeing the historic buildings at the Ryedale Folk Museum, or going to one of the many events at the Baroque mansion Castle Howard.
A visit to this neck of the woods wouldn’t be complete without a day at the seaside – visitors can stroll on the sands at fangtastic Whitby, flit around Filey, browse through Bridlington or spend days at the country’s first ever seaside resort of Scarborough with its Italian gardens, miniature steam railway, casino, clifftop castle and kid-clamouring for seaside amusements.
Kids will also love the nearby theme park and zoo Flamingo Land, making like a monkey on the zip wires at Go Ape! or getting grisly at the York Dungeons after the big folk take in the architecture of York Minster and the history of the Yorvik Centre.

Liked: The staff when we arrived were very welcoming and helpful. They had taken into account the weather and allocated us a tent pitch in a sheltered location. The campsite is very clean and the facilities are excellent. The toilet and shower blocks are spotless and lovely and warm. The campsite is in a good location and there is a nice country pub nearby. It is eay to travel to many of north yorkshires attractions from ... Disliked: We didn't find anything to dislike about this campsite. |

Liked: The site had a few residents for the New Year period but was so quiet it was a breath of 'fresh air'. Disliked: The only thing that we found a problem was the lowering of the power to the electric but we managed thanks to 'duel fuel' in the van ! |

Liked: Nicely set out pitches Disliked: Minor: although the childrens play area had dry areas around each play item, it would have been nice to have connecting dry walks to each play item instead of walking on the grass (which was very wet/muddy) |

The shower and toilet block were kept lovely and clean and the water was lovely and hot the options in there were very good eg. Shower, bath, or cubicle if you just needed to wash, hairdryers were all working.the whole block which consisted of men's, women's toilets laundry room, wash up room were all excellent ... shame about the british weather!! karl p. (Family with older children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: the campsite was warm and welcoming, all amenities were spotless. the showers were toastie warm and there were plenty of them. The tent field was a large, seperate field that was enclosed all around by tall banks which acted as a wind break! the ground was flat and soft, so pegs went in easily. despite all the rain that we had the field stayed pretty dry except for the tracks used by the cars which ... Disliked: I have struggled to think of anything negative to say so the only thing I can grumble about is that our stay was monday to friday and the mobile fish and chip van only came mondays and saturdays and had came to the site on monday while we were erecting ou tent so we missed out lol. |

Beautiful!! Nothing to complain about!! Wiffy (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: Absolutely everything. This site has exceptionally clean facilities. I did not see a single spider, fly or other bug anywhere near the toilets or showers. They are exceptional. There are beauty stations for the ladies and private booths for you to clean your teeth etc. with locking doors. There is also a plug for your own hairdryer/straighteners if you wish. Use of their hairdryers is free. Absolutely every aspect of this site was wonderful ... Disliked: Nothing, everything about this place is wonderful. Some people may think that the gate closing at 11:30pm is a little bit of a bind, but it never caused us any problems and the road outside is a tarmac road, not a dirt track, so leaving your car there if you had to is no great shakes!

Ideal holiday base Eirwen C. (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos) Confirmed ?
Liked: A warm welcome as soon as we got there. Although we did'nt use the shop it looked well stocked. The toilets were clean, with a private wash area. Enough showers and a bath for the little ones. The play area for the children was brilliant - better than some parks - the kids would have stayed there all day! A great campsite, and ideal base for visiting different parts of North Yorkshire - York one day, Whitby ... Disliked: Not much to dislike. Maybe a bath area in the gents would be an idea so that the mums could have a rest. Also, showers kept cutting out after a minuit but that's just me being fussy. Plenty of fun for the little ones, but not much to do for teens.

Liked: We did like the look of the site, how it was set out. Disliked: Ther was supposed to be 6 acres of dog walks. There was just 1 field where children could play football on, and you can also walk your dogs on.Its right next to the road in which vehicles go up and down up to the farm.I know its a site for families, and children should be supervised at all times.(Never saw any evidence of this)There were children of all ages, gangs of ...

In response to your review I would just like to clarify that the dog walking field is 6 acres. There is a small football pitch within the six acres. We also have another walk from the site around another field which also links up with Allerston Village back lane which I gave directions for. |
