It’s stating the obvious, really. A piece of Yorkshire that’s in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and which has walks, history and views galore. And dales and moors, for moody stomping about with windswept hair…No, not Heathcliff this time but Heathfield Caravan Park, set in an unspoilt wooded valley in Upper Nidderdale in the Yorkshire Dales, right on the Nidderdale Way for hiking, biking or cantering along on horseback.
Heathfield Caravan Park is family owned and managed and has pitches with or without electric hook-up, with the showers, loos and other facilities kept spotlessly clean. The pitches come in different sizes to take almost any size of tourers or motorhomes, and most have water at the side of the pitch or within a walkable distance to fill the kettle for a morning cuppa; there’s a shop on site too for stocking up on essentials. For filling up off site, there are two pubs at Pateley Bridge half a mile away.
Nearby attractions and activities
Pateley Bridge is where the Nidderdale Way starts and ends: there are walking, cycling and horse-riding trails along its 53-mile stretch, or you could lead a llama through the dales by hooking up with Nidderdale Llamas. The town is the only one in this dale and has England’s oldest sweet shop and the Nidderdale Museum in the old workhouse.
As it’s Yorkshire, there are historical highlights aplenty: Ripley Castle and its Capability Brown gardens, the twelfth century Augustinian Bolton Abbey with nature trails in Strid Wood and the hunting lodge of Barden Tower, and the dungeon depths of medieval Skipton Castle; the stately homes of Newby Hall and Harewood House both have extensive gardens to wander as well as the usual ornate interiors. A must is Yorkshire’s first World Heritage Site, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, one of the biggest abbey ruins in England and with 500 deer in the medieval deer park.
Yorkshire’s also not short of gorges, caves and geological features to get your rocks off at: the balancing act of the National Trust-managed Brimham Rocks is where the Bee Gees shot the video for You Win Again (teach it to the kids). The limestone caves of Stump Cross Caverns near Pateley Bridge once had wolverines retreating to them in their chase after reindeer and bison; prehistoric reindeer bones are on display in the visitor centre. There’s also the 80-ft deep How Stean Gorge with its roaring waterfalls and Tom Taylor’s Cave; the gorge itself can be explored via the network of footbridges and paths. Malham Cove and Tarn takes in a huge limestone cliff, the Gordale Scar gorge and the Malham Tarn nature reserve – there are several other nature reserves around too, such as Gouthwaite Reservoir and Roundhill Reservoir.
For a well-deserved rest and pick-me-up, head to Harrogate to sup some spa waters and mash a tea at Betty’s Tea Rooms; Leeds and York are also both within driving distance for shopping, seeing the sights and taking in a show or three.

Liked: The site was lovely, grass field was well cared for, not quite level but when you are camping i dont expect totally flat! the toilets and showers were spotless. the field wall was being rebuilt which didnt cause us a problem at all. the welcome we got was lovely and friendly and being able to pitch how it suited our group was brilliant instead of all being in straight lines. (the weather helped keep us ... Disliked: Nothing |

Liked: The location was what brought us to Heathfield as we have two lively dogs who love running and walking in the countryside and there is plenty of that to do here. Disliked: The only niggle was that the touring field was not level, however we chocked the caravan and all was well. |
