Birds, Bempton Cliffs, bumptious views and back-to-basics camping at bargainous prices: if all this sounds your bag, we have the very Bridlington spot for you in Puffin Campsite.
Family-friendly Puffin Campsite is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the viewsome village of Buckton, a few miles from seaside town Bridlington and close to the famous Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve. Not surprisingly, the campsite pulls in birdwatchers who come to spy the local seabirds, but there’s walking, cycling and sightseeing all close to hand too, or use Puffin as a base to take in more of East and North Yorkshire including the coastline, beaches and historical attractions.
The campsite is open between April and September and has tent pitches in a well-maintained paddock from a few pounds per person per night, with no restriction on tent size and with unlimited cars included in the price. Now that’s what we call a Bridlington bargain…
Alfresco cooks can hire firepits and barbecues from the campsite owners, with wood available to buy on site. Can’t be bothered to cook, even alfresco? We hear you…Order some takeaway food from Bridlington: if you ask nicely, they might even deliver your nosh to your tent.
Nearby attractions and activities
That famous Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve is a just a short walk from Puffin Campsite, with 200,000 seabirds (see if you can screech louder), visitor centre and binocular hire; there’s a bird observatory – and the country’s biggest colony of gannets – at adjacent Flamborough Head. The RSPB arrange gannet and puffin spotting cruises around Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough Head from May to July: keep your camera at the ready as the birds often swoop over and down to the boats (you may also want to wear a large hat and a plastic cape). Look beyond the birds too at Flamborough Head for the old lighthouse, with tours available in summer.
Bridlington has boat trips, fishing trips and boats for hire, or just sit back and sample the shellfish; there are lots of tasty treats along the Yorkshire coast and its seaside towns, such as the famous fish and chips of Whitby’s Magpie Café or fresh fish from the market at Scarborough. Both Whitby and Scarborough are well worth at least a day’s visit each for highlights like Whitby Abbey, Scarborough Castle and those famous fish and chips (we are also sneakily fond of the Whitby Goth Weekend). Surfers can take their boards to Scarborough’s North and South bays or to Cayton Bay for high waves and a surf school to show you the ropes.
Filey, between Whitby and Scarborough, has an award-winning five mile stretch of beach and all the usual seaside amusement suspects, but is seen as a bit quieter than its two neighbours. The Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park has an adventure trail, gardens and lots of critters to get up close to – and handle via the feely boxes. The Cleveland Way starts (or finishes) at Filey too and goes inland around the North York Moors National Park, connecting with the Dales Way and several other long-distance paths.
Inland, there are vales, dales, villages, museums and more around the Yorkshire moors, with a trip on the North York Moors Railway almost a must: you’re staying at a campsite called Puffin, after all…The Elizabethan house Burton Hall is less than eight miles from Puffin Campsite, and there are piles of other historical attractions around East Yorkshire including Bridlington’s Sewerby Hall and Gardens with 50 acres of gardens and Driffield’s Sledmore House with its famous pipe organ. And that’s before we even mention the historical highlights of North Yorkshire…
Fabulous York, with its historic buildings, Viking centre and very satisfactory shopping, is around an hour from Bridlington, with the city of Hull, shopping, Pearson Park and Wildlife Garden and eight free museums, about 30 miles from the campsite.
Finally, if you’re feeling sickly sweet, we prescribe a factory tour and making your own lolly at John Bull Rock Factory two miles outside Bridlington.

Beautiful and friendly back-to-basics camping. How it should be! Adamndeb (Young couple, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: In a nutshell, everything. The couple who run the camp-site are very friendly, accommodating and even offered to give us a lift to the station with our heavy rucksacks! The site is well-maintained and the facilities are very clean, with recycling bins provided. The BBQ and fire-pit hire was extremely reasonable and a great idea, delivered and collected to/from your tent. The setting is beautiful, peaceful and is in a great location to get ... Disliked: The fact that there is only one sink to use for washing up, at busy times this could be problematic. |
