Thorpe Farm Caravan Park and campsite was opened at the beginning of 2008 and we welcome caravans, motorhomes and tents, with or without electric hook-up.

We have toilet and shower blocks - male, female and disabled - which double up as a family room. Each unit has toilets and a shower. We also have fresh water and a chemical disposal unit.

The site is situated in a peaceful area around our pond with various facilities to keep kids entertained! Dogs are more than welcome but must be under supervision. The 18th century Peel House is home to our farm shop, coffee shop and gift shop, and there is also a reclamation barn on site.

Breakfasts are available in the coffee shop all day, and Sunday lunches are available: booking a table is advisable! The shop stocks all of the essentials to make your visit enjoyable, including bread, milk, bacon sausages and eggs. If you want anything specific our staff will endeavour to help you out.

Nearby attractions and activities

We are ideally located in County Durham, bordering North Yorkshire, on the A66, nine miles west of Scotch Corner in the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, just 10 minutes drive from the historic market town of Barnard Castle, and 15 miles from Richmond in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

We have a series of walks, ranging from 1-8 miles, starting and finishing at Thorpe Farm (maps are available on request). As well as the Heritage wood walk, which is about one mile long, we have an underpass across the side road that takes you under the A66 giving you access to many walking and cycling routes. A map is available from the shop for those who are interested.

Barnard Castle is a haven for walkers and cyclists - even antique hunters - with a variety of interesting shops, pubs/restaurants and attractions such as Bowes Museum and, set on high rock above the River Tees, the castle. We are just around the corner from Rokeby Park, a 17th-century country house.

A little further afield you can find Raby Castle, Eggleston Hall, High Force Waterfall – England’s highest waterfall = and other towns such as Richmond and Middleton in Teesdale. Also located in 'Barny' for those looking for a leisurely day is Barnard Castle Golf Club and Teesdale Sports Centre, or if you would like more excitement you could book a day with Deepdale Off Road Driving Centre, visit Barford Raceway or take a trip to Hamsterley Forest, with 2,000 hectares of mixed woodland you will find way marked walks and cycle routes, even a championship standard downhill course! There is bike hire available.

So whatever type of break you are looking for, whether its relaxing at the campsite, visiting historical landmarks, leisurely pursuits or an adrenalin filled day, you can find it here in Teesdale at Thorpe Farm.

Liked: The site was very clean and tidy, refuse bins scattered about for use and emptied twice a day. The warden was very friendly and helpfull. Toilet/shower blocks were spotless and well maintained but lacked a mirror over the sinks. the noise from the A66 was not over bearing if you think its going to bother you Top Tip take ear plugs!, there is a dog walk where the dog can run free, but please ...

Disliked: The weather but its not the farms fault, never been in a tent in minus conditions. the shop was a tad expensive, Barnard castle is a few miles away probs a best choice. i can imagine it would be pretty noisy during busy periods. but the warden would probs be on top of that!

Liked: Brand new toilet facilities - opened the same week we arrived.
The staff were very friendly and the warden was always around making sure everything was ok, emptying bins etc and keeping a general eye on things.
The location was great - there are plenty of off road walks for both dogs and children alike, and plenty of farm animals for them to pet if they want to.
The village together with dog-friendly pub is just a ...

Disliked: The shop although good was a good distance to walk from the campsite.
The site is quite close to the busy A66 and can be a bit noisy if your a light sleeper.

There appeared to be a lot of on-going work at the site and the work to date must be applauded. Its still early days for this site and they’re definitely going in the right direction.

Liked: The staff were very extremely helpful and polite.

The site was well marshalled with any excessive rowdiness or unacceptable behaviour being controlled immediately.

There were rubbish bins and water points well positioned throughout the site.

The toilet/shower and washing up areas were kept immaculate at all times.

Disliked: On the negative side the shower changing area only had one small coat hook for your belongings and would have benefited from something to sit on which would double up as an extra place to put your belongings.

The shop carried the very minimum and catered more for the day visitor. I would advise visitors to carry everything they need for their stay otherwise it’s a four mile trek into Barnard Castle.

There were ...
