A Suffolk seaside sojourn? Yes please, we say, especially as this one’s in Felixstowe, known as the Garden Resort of the East Coast and ideal for those of a botanical bent. The kids mightn’t feel too flowery-tongued about the English Heritage-listed gardens of Felixstowe’s promenade and town centre or the many gardens of Suffolk – but we’ll bet our magic beans they won’t be wallflowers at Felixstowe Beach Holiday Park. This Park Holidays site is crammed with activities and facilities for all ages: there’s the Loopy Kids’ Club for 5-14 year olds, an adventure playground, sports field, paddling pool, heated indoor pool with water slide, a games arcade, pool tables, darts…If just reading that is making you feel a bit faint, there are plenty of chances to sit down too, from the family bar with free wifi to the live evening entertainment for all ages. For food, meals and snacks are on hand in the bar area as well as a mini mart store on site if you want to dish up your own food: all caravans at Felixstowe Beach come with fully-equipped kitchens. A launderette is also available for a small charge.

Local attractions

Take your green-fingered yearnings along to Suffolk's heritage gardens such as Wyken Hall and the ‘Cornish garden’ at East Bergholt Place, or placate the little sprouts with a trip or three to the many family-orientated attractions and activities in the county: Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park and the safari at Africa Alive, both at Lowestoft; not getting the hump at the Oasis Camel Centre in Halesworth or building bodies at the Science Project Discover Centre in Ipswich to name just a few. Saplings will also enjoy getting sandy at Southwold, a Victorian seaside town just along the coast with an award-winning pier and boating trips; closer to home, Felixstowe South and Felixstowe North beaches are less than a mile away. The Felixstowe seafront has a leisure centre with swimming pool as well as cafés and kiosks along its two-mile stretch for sticks of rock, fish and chips, ice cream and other seaside holiday essentials. For the grown-ups, try the award-winning course at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club, punting on the River Orwell and River Deben, cycling and ambling on the Suffolk Coast Path or getting in touch with historical roots at Suffolk’s castles, forts and ancient burial mounds. This stretch of the Suffolk Heritage Coast is also where to go for wildlife: RSPB reserves are at Orford, Aldeburgh and Minsmere and most of the surrounding countryside is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For shopping and day trips, Ipswich, Flatford, Hadleigh and Lavenham are just a few of the towns within easy reach, and there’s a stonkingly sized weekly market at Felixstowe.
