  • Touring pitches behind a country pub just off the A12 in Wangford
  • 10 minutes' drive from the seaside town of Southwold
  • Kid- and dog-friendly pub with excellent food and local ales
From pitch to pints in a mere minute or so (and, perhaps more importantly after a tiring day, vice versa…). How utterly fab is the Suffolk setup at The Plough Inn? Ale connoisseurs will likely be particularly chuffed to hear that they’ll not be perusing some bog-standard beer selections here. On the contrary, the offerings here are the finest local brews, crafted at the Adnams brewery just down the road in Southwold. Not a beer-sipping type? No matter, the folks here have an equally well curated collection of wines and spirits to please all palates. Naturally, the accompanying eats are top-notch too, using local produce where possible to come up with a daily changing menu of seasonal scran. There’s plenty of space within these characterful walls for all the family; well-behaved hounds are welcome and there’s a spacious play area to distract the kids from hunger pangs while they await their dinner (handily, on a fine day you can keep an eye on them from a table in the beer garden). Spacious pitches just a short amble away are peaceful in vibes but kitted out with all the essentials, including water and electrical supplies and a well-maintained toilet block with spankingly clean loos and showers. All this, and a cracking location too – coast and country are easily visited from this spot just off the A12 in Wangford. There's a fab farm shop a mile away, and other useful amenities are 10 minutes’ drive away in Southwold (along with paddles and seaside strolls).

Local attractions

You may want to see the sea, or you may want to see where your beer was birthed – either way, you’ll want to make a trip to Southwold, 10 minutes away by car. Tour the Adnams brewery to see the ales being made, or wander down the pier to play on the madcap machines of the Under the Pier show. The walk from Southwold to Walberswick (via little seafood huts and a teeny foot ferry) is rightly popular, as are the exciting high-speed boat trips from the harbour. Also along this stretch of coast are the big beasts of the Africa Alive! animal park (10 minutes’ drive), coastal birdwatching at RSPB Minsmere (20 minutes) and arty Aldeburgh (half an hour’s drive). Set your sights inland instead for more animal antics at the Oasis Camel Park (25 minutes) or an aristocratic amble around the castles in Framlingham and Bungay (both about half an hour away). Beccles is a 20-minute drive away if you fancy a canoe trip, a splash in the heated outdoor pool or poking around in independent shops, followed by some nosh in one of its locally-owned restaurants.
