Farm yourself and family out here for an historic north Norfolk break: Whitehall Farm is a scenic site in the grounds of the Holkham Estate next to the village of Burnham Thorpe, famous for being the birthplace of Naval gazer Lord Nelson. (There’s a pub named in his honour within walking distance, so we suggest that it’s practically obligatory to raise a rum in his memory). The farm is handy too to the main attractions of north Norfolk, with the coastline about two and a half miles away. Bed down in a tent pitch on the quiet meadow next to the farm, or glamp in a double-glazed Whitehall Farm camping pod, insulated to be toasty warm in winter but chilled out in summer; shower and washing facilities are within 20 metres. For provisions and watering holes, the village of Burnham Market is a five-minute drive away and has pubs, restaurants, bakery, grocer and a post office. Whitehall Farm is dog-friendly and is open all year round.

Local attractions

Reach all the highlights of north Norfolk from here: sandy beaches, nature reserves, seaside towns, historic houses and more, with plenty of award-winning pubs and restaurants in the area to fuel up at as well as farmers’ markets to eat your way around the county. The Palladian mansion Holkham Hall is nearby, with a museum, walled gardens, marble hall and parrot room; the estate surrounding the hall leads on to Holkham National Nature Reserve and the white-gold sand of Holkham beach (where Gwyneth Paltrow had a wander at the end of Shakespeare in Love). Turning right from the raised walkway on the beach and walking along the sands for a couple of miles is a very scenic way to reach the seaside port of Wells-next-the-Sea, for watersports, bird-watching or wandering the long stretch of sand to gaze covetously at the beach huts; pick up some cockles from the fish stall by the quay or send the kids crabbing from the quay’s edge. Burnham Market, aka Chelsea-on-Sea, is also nearby to see if you can spot a few famous faces, or there’s bird-watching and seal-spotting from Blakeney and Blakeney Point, more crabbing at Cromer and promenading around Hunstanton all within easy driving distance. The pilgrim village and shrine of Walsingham are about five miles away. Walkers will find loads of treks in the countryside around Whitehall Farm; the North Norfolk Coastal Path runs 45 miles from Hunstanton to Cromer and passes through Wells, Blakeney, Cromer and Hunstanton. The Coasthopper bus route covers the main areas, towns and villages of the north Norfolk coast and runs regularly throughout the year. The boating, golfing, fishing and wildlife of the Norfolk Broads are accessible from Norwich, just over an hour’s drive from Whitehall Farm.
