  • Peaceful, family-run rural site in the Shropshire Hills
  • 20 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury and Welshpool
  • Riding activities on site for kids, beginners and experienced riders
Dreaming of spending your hols in the hills, filling your days with horse riding, hikes and heaps of family days out? Then you may like to head to Long Mountain Centre, a family-run haven in the Shropshire Hills. Folks who fancy seeing the surrounds from horseback are particularly well-served here: the site is in the grounds of a fully-licensed riding stables staffed by folks well versed in training newbies and showing more seasoned riders the best of the local countryside. Riders of all stripes (from experienced gallopers through to novice plodders) can sign up for all manner of sessions including beginner lessons, kids’ pony rides, woodland treks and pub rides. It’s not all equine antics though – non-riders and those whose rumps need a little respite from the saddle should find plenty to do in and around the local towns of Welshpool and Shrewsbury (both of which are around a 20-minute drive away). Castles, gardens and the Shropshire Hills Area of Natural Beauty are all nearby, as is the steam-driven Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. Back at base, facilities are kept simple to maintain the centre’s peaceful rural vibe, but there’s a decent wifi connection in a nod to the outer world; the site also has toilets for guests' use. It’s a 20-minute drive to the nearest pubs, restaurants and shops so your best bet for easy feasts is to light up a barbie and get set for a sausage sizzle under the stars.

Liked: Location great with fantastic views. Quiet and surrounded by lovely countryside. Spacious cabin, good layout. Good amount of space between cabins so you were not aware of what the neighbours were going. Lovely touches such as the eggs on arrival as well as milk.

Route directions

From the A5, take the B4386 Montgomery road. Once you've passed through Westbury, take the first right, signed Rowley/Wallop (take care when driving up the hill as some of the road is single track only). After about four miles is a crossroads with a phone box on the right and a church on the left – carry on past these and the site is on the left, over a cattle grid.

Local attractions

If you're not heading out on horseback, it's a few minutes’ drive from the site to the walking trails of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or you may prefer to paddle your way down the River Severn in a kayak. If that’s all sounding a bit active, perhaps settle for a more serene day of fishing at Spring Lea, 20 minutes' drive away. A castle visit is a cracking idea, too – head into Welshpool, 20 minutes away, for a tour of the huge medieval Powis Castle and its gorgeous gardens, or take the half-hour drive to the ruins of Dolforwyn Castle or Montgomery Castle. Shrewsbury and Welshpool are both around a 20-minute drive away for urban amenities, and surrounded by great places for days out: head a little out of Shrewsbury for Attingham Park, Wroxeter Roman Vineyard and a couple of falconry centres, or trundle over to Welshpool for a scenic steam-powered ride on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway.
