General

  • Peaceful and secluded site with spectacular views
  • In a wildlife haven: listen for owls at night
  • New amenities block including a shower for disabled guests

Your little bears might not want to leave. Big Bear Lodge is a Shrewsbury site with what the owners reckon just might be among the best views in Shropshire – and it's in a spectacularly secluded countryside location where your young can run around and go spotting badgers, foxes, bats, squirrels and even the resident cuckoo that arrives each May.

A flock of feathered visitors also flit around this calmly quiet site, including red kites, woodpeckers, swifts, buzzards and even some tame robins – we spy photo opps. You'll hear the local owls hooting at night, and if it's a cloud-free evening you can settle down under the skies for a spot of peaceful stargazing: no light pollution or traffic noise here.

The Big Bear facilities include fresh water adjacent to pitches, a new amenities block with three showers including one for disabled guests, heated towel rails, rainfall shower heads and washing-up facilities with hot and cold water. Dogs are welcome on site but must be kept on leads.

Big Bear Lodge is also near where the Vyrnwy and Severn rivers meet so has a wealth of walks very close by – and Shropshire has over 3500 miles' worth of hikes if you want to take things a bit further. We reckon we we'd roar with pleasure...

Very nice quiet small site. Booked at short notice as we were in the area. Arrived only an hour after booking and everything was ready when we arrived. Very nice pub only a few minutes drive from the site.

    Disliked:

Only that there were no toilets and showers in our field, but there were some very good ones only a short walk away in the main building.

    Spotlessly clean toilet block.

Not enough shower facilities, queue in morning.
Slightly scruffy field and no welcome or any contact whatsoever with owners.

From the manager...

I have just read your review after your stay with us.
I am sorry you felt as though we should have had more contact with you. That is my fault obviously I was on my own for a few days with my 3 year old and sometimes it’s tricky for me to get out to see everyone which is why we send the emails and state if you need us please come to gate or ring/text me. We try to get the right mix of being there but not getting in peoples way. And when it’s only a one night stay I may not even bump into people. But thank you for the feedback.
I’m also sorry you had to queue for the showers. That is something that doesn’t happen often in fact I didn’t even now there had been a queue.

Lovely location, very remote and peaceful
Showers piping hot and clean though drains appeared to be blocked as water drained very slowly
Lovely welcome from owners and some nice added extras like cooked breakfast and refreshments delivered to your pitch
Spacious, well serviced pitches (though a little uneven)

    Disliked:

Possibly needs more showers - not an issue when we stayed as not many other campers around, though when busy may have to queue.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review.

We never take too many campers, although the site is big enough we don’t want to have 50 to a shower which is the recommended amount so that should never be an issue here, unless of course someone books the site as a private party and then it would be their decision.

There was an issue in the ladies showers, the drain was blocked which someone brought to my attention this morning so has now been rectified. It is not obvious unless you are in their for some time so I had not realised.
Hopefully we will see you again soon.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.
We do advertise the fact we are a remote small site. There is a lovely park for the children in the local village of Kinnerley and with all the open space we have on site we are more than happy for children’s bikes, ball games you can even put nets and goals up. We have had many people do that before.
We have a local store less than 3 miles away that has a good variety and another bigger store 6 miles away.
We email every customer before they check in to have a look at website to get a feel for the area and there’s is an extensive list of places to visit with children and we also aim to help if people have forgotten something.
We also sell food, drinks and ice creams on site.
I am sorry you felt you could only give us a low customer service score. I thought all the emails and pitching you next to a friend after booking was all something you sometimes don’t get from a bigger site. We did also have to come and speak to you (which i presume meant a lower score) about the noise, but we left it until 11pm which as we advertise on PU, in the information pack and on the terms and conditions is the latest we can expect a loud noise as it’s unfair on other guests and neighbours.
But you will find that common practice on any campsite.
Pitch up offer a good service of refining your search so if you state you want a play area they will only come up with sites with a play area so that might help with future bookings.

Plus the hire of fire pits and bbqs really a great touch . Most ofvall the owners were really friendly helpful and kind . Will definitely return one day and recommend to others.

We had a very comfortable stay at this site. The pitch was in a good spot in a smallish field. Good space either side of our camper van. Toilets and showers were good and had everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. We had electric hook up and water was easy to access. We did not meet the owners but all we needed to know was clearly signed and a book about the site was available near the washing up station. Food is available on site . Allie and Paul Marston

Local attractions

This part of England running into Powys and Wales has been popular for yonks with outdoor and active sorts, who come to canoe or fish its waters, canter around the countryside by horseback or foot, climb or mountain bike its peaks, or tackle less trodden options like clay shooting or paragliding. Golf is available locally too.

If you're more into sightseeing than activity, Powys Castle, Erddig Hall, Chirk Castle and the Hawkstone Follies are all good local options, or you could have a day out in Shrewsbury to stroll through its shuts and over its nine bridges.

And as for those miles and miles of Shropshire – and Powys – walks? Try a wander around Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall just over the Welsh border, among the wildlife and birds of Lake Vyrnwy, up and down the three peaks of the Breidden Hills, and through Nesscliffe Hill Country Park between Oswestry and Shrewsbury – with a pitstop at fifteenth century pub the Old Three Pigeons Inn.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (9.6 miles)
  • Much Wenlock Priory (21.3 miles)
  • Darby Houses (Ironbridge) (22.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Chirk Castle (13.3 miles)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (14.2 miles)
