Sanctuary seekers: find peace, quiet (and salmon fishing) at calm Church House Caravan and Camping Park on the banks of the River Vyrnwy in Shropshire, next door to the fourteenth century timber-framed and famed Melverley Church.
If fishing is your mission, the Vyrnwy yields spring and autumn salmon of up to 12lb and coarse fishing specimens such as barbell, chubb, roach, pike and perch: pick up a day or season pass at the Church House reception to try your luck.
Reverential about rambling? The 210-mile Severn Way passes Church House, the Offa’s Dyke Path goes through nearby Oswestry and there are several local footpaths to take a trot to Rodney’s Pillar and the Breidden Hills. Or just sit and stare at the scenery: Church House Caravan and Camping Park is in an eminent location looking across the countryside to the Welsh mountains across the Severn/Vyrnwy flood plains.
This serene site has pitches for tents, tourers and motorhomes, with optional electric hook-up. There are smartly kept loo and shower facilities as well as a hot and cold water washbasins and recycling facilities for cans, bottles and newspapers. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (as long as they’re in dog collars).
For breaking bread, head for the Tontine Inn only a minute or two away, or to The Old Hand And Diamond a mile away which provides a collection and delivery minibus. What an eminent idea...
