Church House Caravan and Camping Park
FavouriteChurch House Caravan and Camping Park is set on the banks of the River Vyrnwy next to the famous and historic Melverley Church, overlooking the borderlands countryside across the Severn/Vyrnwy flood plains towards the distant Welsh mountains.
If you are seeking the peace and quiet of the countryside then look no further!
On site there are toilets, washbasins and a shower. We have a recycling centre for bottles, cans and newspapers.
If you enjoy walking there is an abundance of local footpaths, and the Severn Way long-distance footpath passes the site.
Dogs are welcome provided that you respect the rules of the site and the surrounding countryside.
If fishing is your pastime, you need travel no further as the River Vyrnwy runs alongside.
The famous and historic Melverley Church is open daily and services are held regularly on Sundays.
Nearby attractions and activities
Next door to the site there has been a place of Christian worship in Melverley for about a thousand years. In 1401, the original wooden chapel was burnt down by the Welsh chieftain Owen Glyndwr. The present church was built in 1406, and is made of local Melverley oak.
Melverley Church is a rare example of timber, wattle and daub construction. The white sections are narrower than the timbers, which is a sign of an early timber building. The entire structure is held together with wooden pegs and no nails have been used.
Pistyll Rhaeadr is a captivating waterfall in the Berwyn Mountains, just inside Wales and west of Oswestry and Shrewsbury. At 240ft (80m) high it is the UK tallest single drop waterfall. People have returned generation after generation to take in the spirit and presence of this special place.
Salmon run along this stretch twice a year in spring and autumn, and often hole up in the pools behind the church waiting for an influx of extra water. Fish weighing up to 12lb have been caught in recent years.
Coarse fishing is varied with most species present from barbel to minnows. In recent years weekend matches have been won with weights of between 6lb and 10lb. Mixed bags consisting of chubb (up to 3lb), roach (up to 1lb 8oz), dace (up to 8oz) and gudgeon are caught on float tackle with maggot or caster baits.
Barbel in the river (up to 10lb or more) will show themselves in the summer months to feed on hemp seed or fish meal.
Predatory fish are also present with pike (up to 12lb) and perch (up to 2lb) not uncommon throughout the stretch.
The River Vyrnwy usually fishes at its best a few days after rain and in the warm months of summer. Day or season tickets are always available from Church House.

A site on the riverbank with immaculate facilities and amazing views christ (Family with older children, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: The site had everything needed for a relaxing break. The views from the site are amazing. The owners of the site could not have been more helpful from the minute we arrived. We had canoes with us and were able to launch from the site where we camped. The toilets and shower facilities were always spotlessly clean and never once did we queue even on Bank Holiday weekend. The site limits the amount of campers ... Disliked: nothing to dislike |
