General

  • Family-run smallholding site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Spectacular views over Wenlock Edge and surrounded by walking trails
  • Play park with swings, slides, climbing frame, trampoline and zipwire

At Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, a peaceful family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, finding the dream getaway doesn’t have to be a tough nut to crack.

Nine miles from Wenlock Edge and the meadows and woodlands of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Walnut Cottage is a paradise for ramblers and adventurers. Heaps of walking routes, cycling routes and riding trails – many of which are part of the Shropshire Way circular – crisscross the area, so pull on those walking boots, don your bike helmet or climb into the saddle and explore.

For the little legs struggling to keep up, a play park back on site will buoy moods – let the kids burn off some energy on the swings, slides, climbing frame and trampoline, then have them feel the wind in their hair on the miniature zip wire.

Feeling peckish? Fire up the barbecue and pile it high with supplies from the convenience store in Much Wenlock, then tuck in by the campfire. Friendly dogs are welcome on site, so don’t forget to toss Rex a bone – just make sure he’s leashed first.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The park site entrance is currently (2018) undergoing slight renovation, as instructed to by Shropshire Council. It will have no impact on the caravan park at all.

The owners are talking to Shropshire Council currently about trying to renovate the site shower blocks: they are a bit outdated (but clean). There is a delay on this as the property is Grade II-listed.

The visitors' fee is £3.

Went camping there this weekend with two young children who spent their time on the play park and playing football. Really friendly site and very accommodating. We arrived late on Friday but were still welcomed etc. The site has a few regulars which i believe demonstrates how nice the place is, we'll certainly be going back there, lovely little spot with good views, great family atmosphere.

    Disliked:

The washing/ toilet facilities were combined i.e. Toilet/Shower/Wash basin in one cubicle. There were only three of these to service the whole site :( resulting in queues.
If the above were to be address, it would be a great little site.

Local attractions

This part of Shropshire is brimming over with history. Start with an exploration of the ruins and reconstructions at the Wroxeter Roman city, Viriconium, 15 minutes’ drive from Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, then jump forward a thousand years or so for something more recent: at the birthplace of the industrial revolution in Ironbridge Gorge, 20 minutes away, wander through Blists Hill Victorian Town, learn about the history of iron in the Coalbrookdale Museum and cross the first cast-iron bridge in the world.

There are plenty of stately homes and (formerly) impregnable fortresses nearby: the 13th-century Stokesay Castle is 30 minutes from Walnut Cottage, and the spectacular Attingham Park, Wilderhope Manor and Benthall Hall are all within 20 minutes of the site.

The local towns are no slouches either: Church Stretton, the only town within the Shropshire Hills AONB, dates back to Norman times; Much Wenlock is home to a precursor to the modern Olympic Games, and the Wenlock Olympian Games are still held every year; and Shrewsbury was the birthplace of the Origin of Species’ Charles Darwin.

For a break from history, hire a raft for a tour at Ironbridge Gorge, take to the slopes at the snowboarding and skiing centre in Telford, or get muddy at Severn Valley Quad Trekking, all within 35 minutes of Walnut Cottage.

Must see

  • Much Wenlock Priory (4.1 miles)
  • Enginuity (7.5 miles)
  • Ironbridge Gorge Museums (7.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Wilderhope Manor (3.5 miles)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (6.3 miles)
