General

  • Family-run smallholding site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Spectacular views over Wenlock Edge and surrounded by walking trails
  • Play park with swings, slides, climbing frame, trampoline and zipwire

At Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, a peaceful family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, finding the dream getaway doesn’t have to be a tough nut to crack.

Nine miles from Wenlock Edge and the meadows and woodlands of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Walnut Cottage is a paradise for ramblers and adventurers. Heaps of walking routes, cycling routes and riding trails – many of which are part of the Shropshire Way circular – crisscross the area, so pull on those walking boots, don your bike helmet or climb into the saddle and explore.

For the little legs struggling to keep up, a play park back on site will buoy moods – let the kids burn off some energy on the swings, slides, climbing frame and trampoline, then have them feel the wind in their hair on the miniature zip wire.

Feeling peckish? Fire up the barbecue and pile it high with supplies from the convenience store in Much Wenlock, then tuck in by the campfire. Friendly dogs are welcome on site, so don’t forget to toss Rex a bone – just make sure he’s leashed first.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The park site entrance is currently (2018) undergoing slight renovation, as instructed to by Shropshire Council. It will have no impact on the caravan park at all.

The owners are talking to Shropshire Council currently about trying to renovate the site shower blocks: they are a bit outdated (but clean). There is a delay on this as the property is Grade II-listed.

The visitors' fee is £3.

Very well kept grass areas and hard standing was good quality. Very helpful staff, couldn’t ask for better.

    Disliked:

Toilet block was a bit basic but perfectly adequate. Site fences could do with a lick of paint as it’s starting to look a bit scruffy.

Very peaceful. So quiet you could hear the owls at night. Warm welcome and very accommodating. Nothing too much trouble. Little shop on site with all the basics & available at all hours!

Not really a dislike.......Toilet / shower facilities could do with updating but don’t be put off by this as they are kept spotlessly clean.

    The view was nice.

    Disliked:

    Rude staff.
Only 3 toilets for whole site.
    Showers dirty.
    Playground run down.
    Didn't feel welcomed.
    Not worth the money.

From the manager...

thank you very for the review well appreciated. i am sorry you were not happy. i really do not understand how you say the staff were rude, cause we cannot do enough for our customers. are you saying that we were rude because you turned up at 10.45 am? and i asked if you could come back at 2 pm as our other customers do not leave until 12pm. again very sorry you were not happy.
as for we have not got enough toilet facilities. we have only got 15 pitches and we have got 3 shower and toilets for only 15 vans.
cleanliness- on the toilet and shower blocks, they are cleaned the middle of the night, ready for morning showers, then cleaned once everyone has showered around 10 am, also cleaned all through the day, then at 5 pm another full clean. and it is done like this 7 days a week. so we are sorry they were not clean enough for you.
the playpark - its not run down, its all wood, and all working fine and maintained to a high level all through the day to a high standard, maybe yes it may need paint as it weathers cause its wood, which gets painted once a year.
and we are very sorry that you didnt feel welcomed, but we do our upmost for every to feel welcome.
thank you wayne and lee

Local attractions

This part of Shropshire is brimming over with history. Start with an exploration of the ruins and reconstructions at the Wroxeter Roman city, Viriconium, 15 minutes’ drive from Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, then jump forward a thousand years or so for something more recent: at the birthplace of the industrial revolution in Ironbridge Gorge, 20 minutes away, wander through Blists Hill Victorian Town, learn about the history of iron in the Coalbrookdale Museum and cross the first cast-iron bridge in the world.

There are plenty of stately homes and (formerly) impregnable fortresses nearby: the 13th-century Stokesay Castle is 30 minutes from Walnut Cottage, and the spectacular Attingham Park, Wilderhope Manor and Benthall Hall are all within 20 minutes of the site.

The local towns are no slouches either: Church Stretton, the only town within the Shropshire Hills AONB, dates back to Norman times; Much Wenlock is home to a precursor to the modern Olympic Games, and the Wenlock Olympian Games are still held every year; and Shrewsbury was the birthplace of the Origin of Species’ Charles Darwin.

For a break from history, hire a raft for a tour at Ironbridge Gorge, take to the slopes at the snowboarding and skiing centre in Telford, or get muddy at Severn Valley Quad Trekking, all within 35 minutes of Walnut Cottage.

Must see

  • Much Wenlock Priory (4.1 miles)
  • Enginuity (7.5 miles)
  • Ironbridge Gorge Museums (7.6 miles)

  • Wilderhope Manor (3.5 miles)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (6.3 miles)
