General

  • Camping pods in the centre of Bishop's Castle
  • Each with electric, insulation and lockable double-glazed door
  • Sleeping up to four adults

Town centre camping pods – wooden it be nice? The locally crafted pods at The King's Head in Shropshire are in Bishop's Castle, an agricultural town now also home to an alternative community of arts and crafty sorts: you might like to know that the UK's oldest brewery is here too.

The pods are made just down the road from the site and are set behind the pub in the 'pod pound', an area covered in bark chips from the local surroundings and illuminated at night by security lighting. They're eight feet wide by nine feet long inside, are insulated for warmth in winter and coolness in summer, and can sleep up to four adults.

A lockable double-glazed door is at the front to give natural light and at the back, a small round double-glazed window helps to keep the living space ventilated. All the pods are carpeted and have mains electric, a small wall-mounted heater, two double sockets, a roller blind on the front door and a spotlight (another spotlight is on the front porch).

Within the pod pound, there's an menities block with ladies' and gents' toilet, washbasin and a communal shower cubicle.

Excellent pods with clean facilities and friendly staff 12/09/2018

Kings Head has a good location in the centre of the high street, with plenty of things to do around. The staff were really nice and friendly and were kind enough to let us keep our belongings in the pod for longer than requested on our move out date.

The pods themselves were amazing. Very spacious for 2 people. They were tidy, with access to sockets and a radiator. The onsite facilities were top quality also. Clean toilets and a hot running shower.

    Disliked:

The pub was quite small and rowdy and seemed to be for locals, but there are plenty of other pubs around.

    Lack of Wifi.

It’s proximity to the town is excellent and perfect if you want a night away without the expense of a hotel. Nice sturdy picnic Tables outside. Shower room was warm and shower was powerful very modern bathroom facilities. Pods were clean and warm with heating inside and didn’t hear the outside world once in bed.

    Disliked:

You are very close to the pod next door so if it were busy you may feel a bit claustrophobic. There isn’t a washing up station just a cold water tap. The pods have no furniture so u need to bring everything u would want with you.

Well set up with good access to local amenities 30/05/2018

The pod was comfortable, and the shower and toilets modern and clean. While located behind the pub, we weren't disturbed by pub noise. On arrival we found the pub staff welcoming and helpful and we were able to settle in with a minimum of fuss. The best thing about this small site was its location in the centre of town, with good access to all amenities.

I would recommend and we will almost certainly go back.

    Disliked:

Only downside was the lack of a washing up point. There is a stand pipe/tap but water pressure was a bit low (unlike the shower and taps in the toilet) and there was nowhere to pour washing up water, except the loo.

However, this does not take away majorly from what was good. As I said above, we will almost certainly go back

We had a fantastic time and will definitely use this site again 14/05/2018

The pods and area where the pods are situated is clean and well maintained. They provide easy access to shops, cafes and pubs. After a day spent walking in the local area they are ideally situated to allow you to pop out for a lovely meal without having to worry about driving anywhere. We would highly recommend this small but friendly site.

    Disliked:

Our only criticism would be the lack of an outside tap for filling water bottles and for rinsing mugs or plates. There is clean drinking water in the toilet/shower hut but this isn't really suitable.

From the manager...

Thank you for a great review.

I must apologise for the fact that I had forgotten to show you where the outside tap was, it’s on the side wall of the storage block.

We hope to see you again

Local attractions

The King's Head is centrally located for activities such as cycling, mountain biking and angling, and has excellent opps for walks, as the Shropshire Way passes through Bishop's Castle and Offa's Dyke Path is a few miles away.

Most of Bishop's Castle is in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; marked paths from town pass many hillside and valley villages of the Rivers Clun and Upper Onny. The Jack Mytton Bridleway, the Bishop’s Castle Ring, the Long Mynd, Bury Ditches and Colstey Woods, the Kerry Ridgeway and the Cantlin Stone and Botfield Cross are other recommended walks in the region.

Take a bus from Bishop's Castle to Shrewsbury from Monday to Saturdays to access the Stiperstones and The Bog Visitor Centre, Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle and Bromlow Callow, or stay in town to look over its hundreds of listed buildings.

Closer to home, try the Six Bells or Three Tuns breweries; artists' exhibitions at the town hall; shows at the SpArC Theatre; the Bishop’s Castle Heritage Resource Centre, the Rail & Transport Museum and the social history Elizabethan House on Crutches Museum.

Or have a look at Clun Castle and Clun Museum, the lead mine at Snailbeach and the impressive arboretum at Walcot Hall.
